Clinton Embraces Outlaw States

| | Comments (242)

ORLANDO -- So much for the Democratic National Committee trying to pretend that Florida and Michigan do not exist. Hillary Rodham Clinton upped the ante on Friday for an escalating fight over seating delegates from renegade states to the party’s national nominating convention.

"I believe our nominee will need the enthusiastic support of Democrats in these states to win the general election, and so I will ask my Democratic convention delegates to support seating the delegations from Florida and Michigan," Clinton said in a written statement.

Clinton's announcement sparked a new round of debate over the DNC's decision last year to strip those states of convention delegates as punishment for scheduling early primaries. If Clinton wins this fight she could add the bulk of about 300 convention votes to her tally -- a potentially decisive bloc if the Democratic race goes all the way to the convention.

Barack Obama's camp immediately issued a statement on Friday opposing convention voting rights for Florida and Michigan, arguing that Clinton is trying to talk up Florida's primary on Tuesday out of fear that she will lose today's primary in South Carolina. "Now that Senator Clinton’s worried about losing the first Southern primary, she’s using Florida for her own political gain by trying to assign meaning to a contest that awards zero delegates and where no campaigning has occurred."

Democrats agreed to ban Florida and Michigan campaigning in order to protect the first-in-the-nation status for Iowa and New Hampshire. But now that the traditional kickoff states are behind them, Clinton and Obama are showing interest in Florida’s primary on Tuesday. While Clinton vows to restore the state's delegation, Obama is airing nationwide advertisements on cable news channels that happen to reach six million homes in Florida.

More Trail Mix: Florida to Forecast Both Party Races

In a move they might one day regret, Obama and John Edwards had their names removed from Michigan's Jan. 15 primary ballot, giving Clinton the only shot at bagging delegates if she wins her credentials fight at the convention.

The outcome of this byzantine struggle will be a long time coming, but for Tuesday's Florida primary Clinton is telling an expected turnout of one million Democrats that she is the only candidate who is willing to champion their voting rights at the national convention.

She takes the initiative and forces Obama to react. His position will win him no friends. It is what it looks like: voter suppression.

  10. This from Huffingtonpost.com
(Peggy Noonan writing for the WSJ)

On the pundit civil wars, Rush Limbaugh declared on the radio this week, "I'm here to tell you, if either of these two guys [Mr. McCain or Mike Huckabee] get the nomination, it's going to destroy the Republican Party. It's going to change it forever, be the end of it!"

This is absurd. George W. Bush destroyed the Republican Party, by which I mean he sundered it, broke its constituent pieces apart and set them against each other. He did this on spending, the size of government, war, the ability to prosecute war, immigration and other issues.

TPM has the full story on how Obama used taxpayer money to facilitate his adultery. According to Capital Hill accounting records, Obama used an expense account to… - pay for the 11 tryst visits to the Cayman Islands. - pay for hotel and other expenses for Senate staff aides -- in addition to the security detail -- who also went with the Senator on the tryst weekends. - Obama's mistress's NYPD-chauffeured trips (without Obama) to visit her parents in Pennsylvania, 130 miles outside DC. - Capital Hill police owned undercover Dodge to drive his mistress around the city.

The funny thing is, when that "fairy tale" story first started, I was watching MoJo.....Joe evidently hadn't heard about it, and so they played the entire clip of Clinton's comments re the Iraq votes. Everyone from Joe to Mika to Willie looked perplexed. Joe said, "That's not anything to do with race." Everyone agreed that tagging it racist was stupid. THEN Matthews and Co started the race talk....and over a period of days, Joe and Co got the memo and joined in....

  49. Something about Gary Hart: I have always been suspicious of the Hart/Rice development during the 88 campaign. He was perceived as the frontrunner for the nomination. The Rice affair ended that. Was it a pick-up and then a set-up? Could have been, Donna Rice is a right-winger. Do not be too quick to laugh. The dirty tricks arm of the Repub party does that sort of thing.

Mika sighs like that when Joe is being impossible and she's authentically embarrassed.

The main reason I watch Joe is because (1) I happen to have known Scarborough in the late 90's and thought he was the black sheep of the Republican Party....I mean he really did defend the little people while the rest were collecting their pay checks. I don't agree with him 50% of the time. But then Joe doesn't agree with his party 50% of the time either.

But then, we have all known that Conservatives, Liberals, Independents, Socialists and etc, Are wired differently and don't speak the same language. Depending on the strength of your believes will show the level of tolerance you have.

Its interesting to see the differances on this blog is interesting. Its like a microcosm of society here......rabbit trail....

MIKA. She is definitely a Liberal in all senses. She is more democratic on TV. She strikes and the LIB comes out with serious issues that she feels she must defend.

Hillary Clinton -- (Scorpio, October 26, 1947) horoscope For January 26:

"There's no need to do additional research -- you've got all the information you need to make your plans now. In fact, looking up more facts should only confuse things, so stick with what you've got."

Barack Obama -- (Leo, August 4, 1961) horoscope For January 26:

"On most days, you're happy to take things as they come and spend what you need to spend to maintain a happy life. Today, though you're feeling thriftier and would rather have fun on the cheap."

John Edwards -- (Gemini, June 10, 1953) horoscope For January 26:

You're the best person to advise that one friend or coworker who's going through a hard time -- but they might not be ready to ask for help. You can find a way to say what they need to hear, though."

John McCain -- (Virgo, August 29, 1936) astrology report for January 26:

"Try not to go overboard, but you can't help tidying up wherever you may find yourself. You've learned by now that there's a fine line between helping out and overshadowing, so try to keep it light."

Mitt Romney -- (Pisces, March 12, 1947) horoscope for January 26:

"You should try to let other people make their own mistakes today -- there's not so much you can do about it, anyway and warning them might only cause resentment in the long run. Help them later."

Mike Huckabee -- (Virgo, August 24, 1955) horoscope for January 26:

Try not to go overboard, but you can't help tidying up wherever you may find yourself. You've learned by now that there's a fine line between helping out and overshadowing, so try to keep it light."

  106. Craig,

Let me explain to you how the Clintons used racism to their advantage. I'm amazed that you didn't get it. Even before they got to South Carolina, they decided to use black surrogates to do their dirty work. The whisper campaign among those surrogates was to try to make Obama "not really black" in order to tamp down the black vote.

When that didn't work, they decided, okay, we'll have the black surrogates attack his credibility. So we got Robert Johnson, Charlie Rangel, Andy Young, et al and their comments. When that backfired by galvanizing the black community, particularly younger African Americans not tied to the yoke of the Civil Rights leaders who endorsed Clinton, then the Clinton's decided to minimize the South Carolina contest by pushing the "Barack Obama as the blacks candidate" as a way to marginalize him.

I think people get caught up in a too simplified version of racism. Perhaps the phrase should be racial manipulation. The Clintons have enough of a knowledge of the black community to know which pressure points within the community are reactive and which aren't, almost in the same what that George Bush successfully could talk to evangelists over the heads of the majority of Americans. But this time, the manipulation didn't work in corralling the black vote. And I know this may sound like a cliche, but the African American voters in South Carolina are decidedly going to vote their hopes rather than their fears.

  122. Alpha,

I'm the Obama mama here this morning and I can say indisputably that your are reading too much into this.

The Black Clinton surrogates were used to counter Obama's reach out to the black population in this country, by trying to show that he was one of them.

While watching them, I thought it was brilliant. The reason he has moved upwards is the use of Oprah, Jesse Jackson Jr, and others.

But I also thought it might backfire a bit and it has in SC.

Now where Bill Clinton has fouled up was his ill used stumping for his wife. He was too harsh, lettting his real feelings be seen and he literally has injured his own legacy with his misuse of the position of "Elder Statesman".

Tricky and delicate balances in Politics. We still have to see what is going to happen in FEB. Its going to be a wild ride and its still for us to analys what really happened afterwards.

BECAUSE, the media is the biggest shill in this race.

Posted by: Sheila Author Profile Page | January 26, 2008 9:25 AM

  123. Well Sturgeone,

Glad you asked that. I think Obama threatens them on a number of levels. One, he's not part of the "club" of thirty, forty year Civil Rights generation vets, so they're not particularly interested in having him on the scene. He threatens their all too comfortable positions. So they're MORE than happy to say the things that the Clintons can't. Two, this is politics. The Clintons have a ton of past and future political chips to cash. These guys don't want lose their little power by going against the Clintons. But don't get me wrong. You don't have to be forced to do something in order to be part of a strategy. And that's the sad thing.

What we saw from Bill Clinton was a classic case of a white liberal politician absolutely befuddled about why he wasn't effective with his old woo-doo on black voters. Bill never realized that the whole "first black president" comment was IRONIC, not real. While he has a good reputation within the black community, he made the mistake of thinking that his credentials could negate the credentials of a real black candidate. So he threw a tantrum.

  144. Katherine,

That's a good point. I think the media is missing something important. Obama still has a significant amount of white support nationally. I think this "black victory" in South Carolina is over played. And I also think that a lot of white voters watched the whole Hillary and Bill show in SC and decided to move to Edwards as an alternative. I honestly don't know how that will play out on Feb 5th, but I have a feeling that we're going to have a TON of 33%, 33%, 33% races.

Nothing about being a black candidate says that one is untouchable. But what the Clintons attempted to do was distort in order to do it. Now that's politics too, but when you're hoping to get black votes at the same time, the blowback is that the black community looks at you as a liar and unfair. And instead of getting votes via negative politics, you instead get black voters resentful of your campaign and energized to vote for Obama. And that's what happened.

I've heard comments that Obama is laying claim to all the work of the Civil Rights generation that wasn't his by right because he lacked the "descendant of slaves" credential, while having access to money and connections that were still closed to their children.

For the younger folks it is dealing with the inheritant racism in American society and black is black no matter how you got there. For them, he could be the great hope of change in the future.

  160. Sheila,

Now you're being naive. You can be for equality all of your life, but still use a race strategy to manipulate an election. One doesn't have anything to do with the other. As a former reporter, let me let people in on a secret. The media listens to campaigns and then reports on the findings. All campaigns have messages, and if you want to complain about race being in the media, point the finger back at the campaigns. It's there for a reason.

    Posted by: alpha1906 Author Profile Page | January 26, 2008 9:46 AM

Great thought. Since I brought up the subtle racism of our generation...that 90% don't like to recgnize.

Why couldn't our generation of African Americans be dealing with the same subtle prejudice, but only on the Slave heritage plain of feeling.

Like women who are still emotionally connected to the woman's movement.

    Great thought

  163. Tylenol

"what vote is black and what vote is white"

No you you don't declare race when you register, but votes are recorded by precinct (geographic areas). Because de facto segregation is still present, analysts know which precincts are predominantly white and which have a black majority. When they combine that with exit polls, there is a pretty accurate measure of the percentages of each race voting for each candidate.

Now your being over zealous. As a former Producer of News,.....lol Really,

don't you see what was interjected here? Puppet strings are a dancing.

The Obama campaign used a good strategy that would have worked. If the Junior Field Producer (speaking general) didn't inject something interesting and possible into the mix. The News room went with it (24 hour News cycle needs dirt for watching) and then we got

Huge strategic backlash from the CLinton campaign. Afterall, they aren't the new guys on the front. CLintons have the best of the best in their camp.

This is a great lesson in manipulation.

  169. Alpha -- Like they say, politics ain't beanbag. but I will tell you that as a divorced mother trying to raise kids in Reagan's America, I was pissed at Obama's comments. No matter what he ultimately meant. Have I been pissed at both Clintons about various things? You bet.

You are right about the generational gap. Months ago, when I didn't think I'd pick a candidate, I started hearing Barack talk about getting baby boomers and that '60s mentality out of politics, and quite frankly, I reacted to it. That does not mean that I won't fully support him if he's the candidate....but ageismwas introduced into the dialogue.

People of different generations see things through their own time's eyes. Back when my son's inner city football team (mostly black players) hung out at my house every day after practice, one of them discovered Amos & Andy at a video store. Unbeknownst to me, they were watcing these while I was at work...they thought these were hilarious...and several of them, including my (anglo) son, put a Kingfisher message on my home answer machine. Those boys thought I was insane when I made them erase the thing.

Posted by: Sheila Author Profile Page | January 26, 2008 9:55 AM

  172. Jamie,

It is generational and that surprised the hell out of the Clintons. They're used to (just like all pols I will say) getting the head of the church, the local politician, etc. as endorsers and then getting the body to vote for them. And I'm guessing that those pols all guaranteed that they could do that. But what these pols didn't anticipate was that black Gen Xers and younger African Americans don't care about marching lockstep with ministers, Civil Rights politicians, etc.

I think Newsweek had an article saying that some South Carolina leaders were absolutely scared because they'd endorsed Clinton and their members had gotten angry because they were supporting Obama. One woman said that it was threatening her leadership position.

What the Clintons did, and I'm grateful for it, was galvanize this younger generation (of which I'm part of). They have NO idea how many new listserves, Obama contributors, they created among younger African Americans.

The media is now referring to this as a "tantrum" and an example of how wrong the Clintons have been to use the race card.

Once these jackels get on a meme and everyone piles on repeating each other, there is almost no way to stop them. You can stand there repeating, "But that isn't what happened" over and over and it will make absolutely no difference. Once the media starts playing Little Sir Echo, you can't hear the truth over the reverberation.

  178. Jamie

Agreed. Also, believe that when Obama intially entered the scene, he did not reach for the MLK/civil rights struggle mantle, but wanted to transcend & be perceived as you say--a new hope for the current generation, to get beyond the boomer (mine) generation's claims.

Sheila - speaking of subtle racism, just take a look at the
backdrop of the diner where Joe/Mika, et al are broadcasting
    from.

  182. KCG - Republicans also cheered as the true Bill shows, what a great moment.
But hey - strong people need to have a back bone. We do not want a whimp in the White House.

  184. Piing that last real oldie but goody journalist I worked for before he retired, was David Brinkley.

At his late age, he was cantankerous and brilliant at the same time. Cranky cranky cranky. Of course, it was a cronic back pain that made him cranky.

Posted by: Sheila Author Profile Page | January 26, 2008 10:09 AM

  185. And of course I guess everyone just assume the Republicans are racists

  187. I would be interested in seeing the educational levels in the Obama support in the same way that they have broken out the College Women vs. the High School women with Clinton.

There has always been a similar division within the black community. The ones descended from Free Men or well educated following emancipation even up to high income levels with their own wealthy and debutante balls (the highest level of "separate but equal"). They had solid families and became the ministers, teachers, business leaders, graduates of the "black" colleges and the "token" within white society.

With the Civil Rights movement these people were released from the ghetto areas and finally able to climb the ladder of society that they had always deserved by virtue of talent and education. As a result those without strong families, poor education, and poverty were left behind without mentors and examples of the way out and up. Add in drugs and gangs and you have a huge number of people divorced not only from middle class life, but their people as well.

  188. Clyburne...NOW HE is an elder statesman. I'm so glad he is on and explaining the subtlies.

Posted by: Sheila Author Profile Page | January 26, 2008 10:26 AM

  189. I can't believe how JS and MB are trying to make this a race issue. If they would keep their mouth shut and let people talk then maybe people could finish their thoughts.

    Posted by: Jeannie | January 26, 2008 10:30 AM

  190. Clyburn's statements interesting to me.

The did however twist the Senator Clinton MLK Johnsons statement out of context and also what she said

So if you base your complaint on a lie. What are you

Posted by: Katherine Graham Cracker | January 26, 2008 10:32 AM

  191. According to Clybourn and Scarborough saying that someone is inexperienced or challenging their voting record is now RACIST? WTF???

Posted by: JoeCHI Author Profile Page | January 26, 2008 10:33 AM

  192. Apparently anything anyone says about Obama that is bad is now racist.

Also Clyburn pointed that the voting pattern is established not something the Clinton's did and they just slid over that

I have to agree with Craig. Just as the media turned women to Clinton in NH they have now done the same thing with white voters...because if the Clintons are racist...what the hell are the rest of us.

Posted by: Katherine Graham Cracker | January 26, 2008 10:34 AM

  193. I agree.... that makes a lot of sense!

    Posted by: Jeannie | January 26, 2008 10:36 AM

  194. Clyburn should have just come clean and made his endorsement of Obama known. If you listen to any of his comments of late they are clearly pro Obama and I find his lack of public endorsement dishonest. I can't say I am surprised, though.

Posted by: zoey Author Profile Page | January 26, 2008 10:37 AM

  195. JoeCHI, Not true.

he was saying that the young in this Generation don't need to be turned off by "Our Generations" arguements. He's right and from what he said, the Clintons and Obama have listened in ths last couple of days.

Posted by: Sheila Author Profile Page | January 26, 2008 10:37 AM

  196. ......Geez....Zoey. Clyburne has endorsed the CLintons already.....
