New Hampshire Independents Eye McCain and Obama

| | Comments (147)

If John McCain really is on the comeback path in New Hampshire, those much-discussed independent voters might not help Barack Obama as much as expected. Independents comprise 40 percent of the electorate in New Hampshire, where voters can play in either party’s primary. In 2000 New Hampshire independents fueled McCain’s Republican primary victory, but have so far showed less interest in the Arizona senator’s current bid. Many were drawn to Obama’s Democratic candidacy, attracted to the Illinois senator’s message of change from “politics as usual.” But without a big Obama win in Iowa (just five days before New Hampshire votes), those Granite State independents might give McCain another look.

  1. Criag- I do not see repubs going for McCain- I also know of many people scrambling lately all over the place and a lot of support heading Obama's way.
    McCain's ship has gone. I respect a lot about him, and never quite understood the repubs hated of him.

  2. Craig the Indies are just as opposed to the war as the Dems are, I don't see your scenario playing out. Also there is a national mood for change, McCain is anything but change!

  3. Obama or Edwards needs to make a really good speech focussing on the slash and burn tactics being employed by HillCo. Lots of indignation and disgust, really tap into the rage felt by many of the party base against HillCo.

  4. Here are some stats to back up the idea that independents may move to McCain and/or the Republican ballot.

    kind of hard to criticize someone for attack politics when you are doing it yourself. Obama attacked Edwards for taking pac money...(I guess it was when he was in kindergarten)

  5. Oh no, Craig...say it ain't so.
    I realize you have never written McCain, as I mistakenly did when his crew abandoned ship and the coffers went empty for so long.
    I though he should have stopped then.
    Now, like a monster rising from the foggy-bottom swamps of coastal Carolina, here he comes.
    Iraq is growing more unstable every day and there is no win for the US there. The McCain administration would escalate US presence there and fins a way to extend over to Iran...who knows what would blow up in Lebanon, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria...I'll stop there. McCain believes in policing the world and printing more paper and borrowing from China to pay for it. On this one aspect alone, Ron Paul would make a better president.
    Bloomberg-Lieberman.......Lieberman-Bloomberg? Why not...this crazy year to come , I am afraid, will bring stranger situations than this,even.

  8. A paragraph of badmouthing aside, WaPo's Peter Baker limns out the many, many, many similarities between the ersatz "anti-Bush" Foreign Affairs article ghosted for Huckabee with both Bush's own policies and statements, both today and from 8 years ago.

    He also shows it's just more warm spit in an old, overflowing GOP bucket.

  14. Craig, I don't see McCain having a resurgence - he may get a few votes from folks who think Holy Joe still has some integrity, but I can't see much of a swing among the NH indies.

    Brian, Edwards and Obama should do exactly that- Hillary doesn't have enough people talking about her. Barack's been doing well against herand narrowing her lead - why change now? John, outside of Iowa, not so much. But they could use all the old lines - slash and burn - oh, you already did that, politics of personal destruction - wait, Obama'salready done that (about 1000 times), blah,blah blah. The base? Do you think the things you're concerned about has escaped the base? I doubt it. And coming from them, a good speech won't mean diddly to that part of the base that are her supporters, and if the undecided voters out there haven't noticed the comments about Edwards and Obama that have come from Clinton supporters, the need to pay their cable bills. I can't believe that Edwards or Obama telling undecided voters that Clinton is being mean is going to draw many votes to them. So it might feel good to them to make such a speech, but it won't do much for their chances. Or not.

  15. Craig: the independents might flock to McCain if he was still "Straight Talk Express" McCain version 2000.

    But he's enabled and supported Bush -- whom he must personally recognize as a disastrous president, one who supports torture -- for 7 years now. He also sucked up to the Christofascist wing of his party.

    He ain't Goldwater, and he's forfeited too much of his credibility.

    It's a shame, because imagine what a better country we would be had McCain -- or Gore -- been inaugurated in 2001.

    And: remember, there is an Obama in the primary. A genuine change candidate.

  23. Jack Kingston endorsing Mitt, I guess that makes Mitt the idiots first choice.

    Posted by: Brian In NYC Author Profile Page | December 18, 2007 2:32 PM

  24. Brian you could be right - it could keep passions running high, and it might take some of the media attention away from Hillary, so long as she doesn't respond. I wouldn't count on that as a campaign strategy. I think that would be a great opportunity for Hillary to point out that they are now reduced to attacking her campaign rather than run on their issues, and could give Bill the chance to come out swinging with a real target to swing at instead of just free form campaigning and generating gaffes in that context, and it would not be personal, and it would be effective. I could be wrong, but I think they would look like kids if they tried it and stand more to lose by that gambit than they have to gain. I still say Obama is doing well enough that I doubt he'd take this approach. John on the other hand doesn't have anything to lose anywhere but Iowa, so why not try it?

  31. Brian, trial lawyers defend justice for others, not for themselves. When a jury (voters?) get a hint that the lawyer is advocating for himself instead of his client or the jury (read, the public), he's toast. Maybe he and Barack could pleadfor justice for each other. Besides - justice? in political campaigns? Tough sell.

  38. McCain's stance on the war is irrelevant as all of the republicans except for Paul want to continue so we can "win," whatever that means.

    Polls about candidates are irrelevant as, as this little nugget I got from the Richardson campaign states: "A brand new poll out of New Hampshire says that not only are HALF of all Democratic voters undecided -- a THIRD of those who've picked their candidate could change their mind."

    Throw this all into the soup and it's all a jump ball, and not just for the first tier.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Bob Kerrey would be a bad one to have as an enemy.
    In his mea culpa he told-all.
    He was a Navy Seal assassin in Viet Nam.
    You think The Sopranos were tough?
    A village leader in Viet Nam gave just the slightest bit of resistance in cooperating with the US invasion strategy , and Kerrey slipped into the villages in the middle of the sleepy night with a knife and slit their throats.
  105. Brian,
    I don't care that Allison Stewart is a babe (though I'm not complaining). I find her very smart, genuine and engaging. The segment she did with Chris Dodd was great, as was the segment with the Bolo Pundit. Long day for Craig. Imus in the morning, Stewart in the evening.
    Now back to PBS and the News Hour to see what the Turks plan for northern Iraq and the PKK.
  110. Here's Rush's take:
    Rudy Giuliani is no oil painting, nor is John McCain. Fred Thompson may have cracked it in Hollywood, but he's hardly leading man material. Barack Obama has those ears to contend with, while every time Joe Biden opens his mouth it's like watching an old episode of Mr Ed. Even pretty boy John Edwards is starting to show signs of wear. But according to Rush Limbaugh, it all matters little for the male presidential candidates, because when men age they look "more authoritative, accomplished and distinguished." What does matter, says Limbaugh, is that Hillary Clinton, who turned 60 in October, is starting to wrinkle.
    Posted by: Julia | December 18, 2007 9:25 PM
  113. Patsi,
    Rush was probably commenting on that picture of Hillary the drudgereport posted a couple of days back. Not flattering.
    After seeing the piece on the Turks and the PKK on the News Hour tonight, it dawns on me once again that the next Sec. of State must be extraordinarily skilled and have the complete confidence of the next administration. Craig's comments about the next Sec. of State made all this food for thought.
    Speaking of food. I'm starved.
    sorry about the poll deal, I have been infected by the worst kind of vermin(Craig can relate to this), SPAMMERS.
    I was trying so many different polling/survey applications that I never really secured any of them, no big deal, just a poof and there go the scumbags\spammers (albeit temporarily I'm afeared)
    but we should be on track to start this Friday. I'll get together the details for everyone's perusal tomorrow.
    Jamie: I'll send an email :-D, thanks for the welcome
    I don't see any Republican candidate getting the nomination save for McCain. I think Craig's right to a degree, whichever Indies decide to vote R this time will probably go for McCain, but I don't think it will be many.
    Bill Richardson was here Sat, wish I could have gone to see him. I've never seen the next guy that should be President up close.
  127. dog: brian mentioned that Kerrey had sunk to a new low.
    patsi derided brian. I just threw in the thing i remember most about kerrey. kerrey never took ANY political hammerings about his actions in vietnam...he's regarded as a hero, and he did lose a leg over there. when 13 people are slaughtered under questionable circumstances, it never goes away.
    hillary clinton accepted gratefully the support of kerrey.
    i may be the only person in the blogosphere who will post anything about kerrey-as-killer.
    But following is what brian was writing about. here's the first paragraph of the story:
    Ex-Nebraska Sen. Bob Kerrey supports Hillary Clinton
    09:38 AM CST on Monday, December 17, 2007
    COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton celebrated one high-profile endorsement, from the Des Moines Register's editorial board, by announcing a second endorsement, from former Sen. Bob Kerrey, a Nebraskan-turned-New Yorker. Mr. Kerrey told an energetic crowd gathered at a high school here that he is backing Mrs. Clinton "enthusiastically and unequivocally
  134. More about the Senate approval of $$$,$$$,$$$,$$$'s for the Iraq RATHOLE !
    I can't even sleep I am so mad about this! :
    Arizona Republican JOHN MC CAIN, a stalwart war supporter, was the only one of the Senate’s five presidential candidates present for the vote on the amendment, which he supported.
    The measure now moves to the House, which is expected to clear the bill later this week and send it to the president’s desk.
    The approval of the measure marks a sharp turn from the hard-line positions Democrats took in November. At the time, they warned that Republicans and the White House would have to accept a funding bill with a provision calling for a complete troop withdrawal from Iraq by next December, or face the prospect of funding the war through the Pentagon’s fiscal 2008 spending bill.
    Posted by: Dexter Author Profile Page | December 19, 2007 1:38 AM
  135. Does anyone else feel cheated by the Democrats just caving in to the Bush admin on this?
    I voted for CHANGE and an END to the war...now, the damn fool says to push on.
    Hightower points out measures the Dems could have implemented to end the war in his latest newsletter.
