ORLANDO – When Mike Huckabee flubbed his response to former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto’s death on Thursday, the only good news for the Republican presidential contender was that he goofed in Florida instead of Iowa, where more voters are paying attention.
During a single appearance in Orlando on Thursday, Huckabee twice raised doubts about his ability to handle international affairs – so much so that his staff later had to issue clarifications.
For starters, Huckabee raised eyebrows by mistakenly apologizing for Bhutto’s killing instead of offering condolences. At an Orlando airport rally Huckabee expressed “sincere concern and apologies for what has happened in Pakistan.” A campaign aide later explained that the former Arkansas governor had meant to extend his “deepest sympathies.”
After the Orlando rally, Huckabee tripped again when taking questions from reporters. He talked about the impact of Bhutto’s assassination on “whether or not there’s going to be martial law continuing in Pakistan.” Actually, martial law was lifted earlier this month.
For most candidates such minor missteps would hardly be worth mentioning. But Huckabee has goofed before on foreign policy. In the remaining five days of Iowa campaigning, he would be well advised to confine his extemporaneous remarks to domestic matters.
Comments
"mistakenly apologizing for Bhutto’s killing "
It might have been a mistake to say it but it was not a mistake to make the apology given Shrubco involvement in her return..
And what about when he said "after you know who the second largest group of illegal immigrants are Pakistani's"...(.which Tweety then translated to "Paki bashing" for that alone he should be fired.)

I've done a lot of heavy tongue-in-cheek joking around about wanting Huckabee to be the Republican nominee.....
but, my god..... let's hope that even the Kool-aid drinkers can see how inadequate he is to be president of this country and leader of the free world....
if this man actually does become the Republican nominee...... let's hope that most voters will see how broken and craven the GOP has become....

One of Rudy's operatives has suggested eliminating all Muslims, it seems. Came dangerously close to saying that the only good Muslim is a dead Muslim. He explained it though, saying he didn't "necessarily" mean a genocide.....

to answer your question from the last thread about the medical book I just bought.....
I heard a very informative program on NPR from a woman doctor named Devra Davis..... she wrote a book entitled "The Secret History of the War on Cancer"....
I just had to get it..... went to Amazon and also ordered "Overtreated, Why too much Medicine is Making us Sicker and Poorer" by Shannon Brownlee....who I also heard on NPR.... (this is the title I was referring to yesterday)....
both women were excellent on the radio..... and their books look the same....

If Romney is the nominee (I cannot believe that will happen --I think they will turn to Liddy Dole first) the Democrats will just run the newspaper editorials from those conservative newspapers saying he isn't fit to be president.

About the Huckabee goofs, I doubt that too many people A.) noticed, or B.) cared. To a lot of folk, the rest of the world is a minor nuisance compared to what's going on with them and their own lives. 'Some broad gets shot in Pakistan...too bad so sad, but I gotta pay my rent and my uncle's in the hospital.' It's ignorance + isolation + the regular bullshit of everyday life. One would be likely to appreciate only what one can relate to personally, which is basically true of any supporter of any candidate: I support the one who best represents my own values/beliefs/goals/etc. So obviously, if one doesn't think about US foriegn policy, one isn't going to pay much attention to these two Huckabee gaffes.
That, and Huckabee has how much experience dealing with FP matters...? Oh, that's right. Not much at all.

Renee,
The American public has fallen into the habit of "fast food" since more and more families require two full time wage earners often with long commute time just to stay level with the life style of their parents. It takes a little more effort to create your own TV dinners and/or learn the techniques of fast fresh food cooking.
In addition, with the break up of the extended family, a great deal of "old wives tales" remedies have fallen by the wayside in favor of trips to the doctor for the latest pill as advertised on TV.
I made my doctor laugh the other day when I said even a cow stops drinking cow's milk by the age of one. (That one should get the Dairy Board on my case)
There are scads of places on the web with thoroughly vetted home remedies for most common causes of illness or rendering first aid. Outside of a yearly check up, the only reasons to see a doctor are "Chronic or Crisis".

What I saw of the Ohio coverage was all about the farce of 2004, where untold thousands of people of color and poor folks were denied their franchise and deprived of their right to vote, by the planning of Ken Blackwell, then Sec'y of State of Ohio.
Many thousands simply could not get to the voting machines before the polls closed. It was horrendous.
Blackwell was rewarded by the GOP here by giving him the governor's nomination, but he lost big to Ted Strickland.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
But Craig...Huckabee means well "with (his) heart". He also said "we all make mistakes with words..."
What's the big deal?
Heck, wasn't Reagan going to "start bombing in five minutes"?
And they all keep invoking Reagan's filthy name, especially Rudy and Mitt.
Ya gotta admit, the magazines and comedians and late-night entertainers are all pulling for a Huckabee presidency...lots of fodder!
Jamie....
it's a lot more than just what you posted.....
harborwoman posted something yesterday about the fact that big pharma is now sponsoring medical classes in the universities..... doctors and pharma are tied to the hip.... so if someone complains of an ailment that could be helped by the average common remedy...... forget it..... the doctor recommends some expensive drug.....
for instance..... I have slight arthritis in my hands...... but I would never tell my doctor this because she would immediately put my on some powerful drug that probably wouldn't do a thing for me..... I've learned to live with it....
I think we as a society expect waaaay too much from doctors.... they are not god..... and like it or not.... as we all age.... we all get aches and pains....
but grandma and grandpa of yesteryear learned to live with it....( and didn't expect to live to be 90-100 either).....
BTW..... I agree with you and Ghandi..... cow's milk is for baby calves....
although I do enjoy a bit of ice cream in summer....
You are right about my post just being the tip of a very large iceberg. As to Arthritis there are lots of things you can do to. One of the easiest, increase the number of avocadoes and soya in your diet. As you said, it doesn't eliminate all aches and pains but it does ease the condition and you're not doped up on pain killers.
With you I enjoy milk in various recipes and of course ice cream at times, but feeding lot cows are stuffed with so many hormones, antibiotics and other crud that it actually injures children rather than being a healthy food.
for any who have contact with young children who might like a really great series of books to read: The Freddy Books, by Walter Brooks........way out of print, but available in libraries.
About Freddy the talking pig.....jinx the cat and all the animals talk.....Orwell may have gotten a gleam of an idea from these books.......maybe....not sure of chronology.......
Posted by: sturgeone | December 29, 2007 4:50 PM
The first Freddy book, To and Again, was published in 1927. From 1928-1932 Walter worked as a book review editor and columnist for The Outlook and Independent magazine, where he was one of the first reviewers to discover the work of Dashielle Hammett. From 1932-33 Walter worked for the New Yorker, writing "Talk of the Town" pieces. From 1933-1937 he was a Contributing Editor to Fiction Parade magazine and from 1938-1940 held a similar position with Scribner's Commentator. From 1940 until the end of his life in 1958, Walter gave up editorial work and devoted full time to Freddy and the writing of his adult short stories.
Despite their being quite popular in the 1940s and 1950s, the books went out of fashion and out of print in the 1960s, although children's departments in some fortunate libraries continued to make them available. In the past decade they have been republished by Overlook Press, in response to plaintive requests from Freddy fans who remember the books from childhood and treasure their combination of ingenious plots, well-drawn characters, literary allusions, and wholesome (but not cloying) moral lessons. Adam Hochschild, writing in The New York Times Book Review, describes the series as "the moral center of my childhood universe."
Quite surprised I am that 2 networks are jumping in and stealing the NFL's thunder ...or is that thunder just a far-off barely heard thunderclap?
I have had NFL Network for a long time and I didn't even know it was actually sending out live games...I thought I had to pay for the NFL package to get football off the satellite. I thought this NFL Network was just reruns and post and pre-game stuff, until a month or so ago.
Now that people like me are aware of it, the NFL caves in and takes the network dough, and really diminishes any clout and sales-drive this game tonight might generate.
It really seems like the NFL is admitting a mistake here...not enough people receive NFL Network on their cable to make a profit, I guess.
Or maybe they figure the game is going to be a route (which it will be) and nobody was going to watch it on NFL Network anyway. Does anyone outside of New England care if the Pats go 16-0?
The NYY-NYM World Series a few years ago was one of the poorest TV rated Series in history.
What makes the NFL think anyone outside Boston cares what happens to the Patriots? Damifino.
I have been thinking about the Huckabee misspeak.
Reagan was constantly getting all mixed up. He even thought he had actually been involved, in real life, with movies he had done. He was a mess.
Many were sure Nancy Reagan made policy decisions by the positions of the stars in the heavens.
That whole administration was chock-full of these incidents.
And now all these repuggs evoke the wonderment of the Reagan years.
Now we have Huckabee getting a lot of derision for a little mix-up . So what if he didn't know that Pakistani illegal immigrants didn't even number in the top thirty groups of Illegals, let alone not be #2.
Seriously, everyone knew Reagan was joking about bombing the USSR and everyone knew it.
It was a big joke on the news.
It endeared that scabby bastard even more deeply into American hearts. (SOME of American hearts, anyway.)
These guys are tired. Romney probably learned a lesson: don't talk in riddles. He surely knew his dad never actually marched with King, but that thing turned into a disaster for him. Was he trying to get away with bullshit? Nah...I honestly think these guys are tired and are making mistakes like we all do when we are exhausted.
Huckabee not being on top of the phony "World War 3" that Bush was lying about does kinda bother me, cuz we don't want someone to MEAN it when they announce a bombing will start in five minutes.
Dex,
All those Giant fans in and around NYC care plenty about the Patriots going 16 - 0, and they hope their team can stop it. They also know their team needs to get ready for the play-offs.
The Albany area has a lot of Boston fans, and I was looking forward to seeing Patriots/Giants fans' interaction at my favorite watering hole. Now that the game is on the other networks, the bar will take a beating (no crowd), and I'm going to stay home and nurse a cold.
That is what I get for not paying full attention, I got distracted by listening to an old compilation of Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Jessi Colter & Tompall Glaser. Tompall had a brother Jim who also was in the music business, I think. If I sift through my Lp collection I bet I could find one of his. But Tompall, he wrote and performed some great songs.
With a nod to Matt (off topic for sure) I have to note that I have this obscure album of Shel Silverstein songs performed by Bobby Bare. I don't play it often but it has some really touching songs mixed up with some very humorous ones. Oh well, maybe I'll put that on the turntable next.
2. Obama flyer that I have already received several times already
3. www.one.org
4. A flyer from former Gov. Vilsack asking me to support the chronic disease legislation resolution at the caucus
Pretty typical amount, no Hillary today but will probably get more from her on Monday, Wednesday, and maybe Thursday. Headlines:
Democrats: Clinton catches up to Obama. Clinton appears to have the market momentum for future gains, while Obama's financial support may have stalled (at least temporarily). Though Edwards slipped today, there is some market support and momentum for him to make additional gains in the short run.
Republicans: The Huckabee and Romney graphs look like two prize fighters in the 14th round of a 15 round fight...Can Huckabee hold onto his lead long enough to win, or will Romney make enough points to score a win by decision? This could be a cliffhanger on caucus night....The other question is who will get the "standby" ticket out of Iowa? No third place candidate has yet emerged to claim the prize.
off topic:
Bowmanc, Yes, Jim had a pretty successful solo career after the Glaser Brothers (Tompall, Chuck and Jim) broke up. They owned a big studio and publishing house on Music Row, where Waylon and others congregated. It was dubbed Outlaw Central, and published, among other songs, John Hartford's "Gentle On My Mind." Tompall was in many ways the business brain behind the movement -- he's very ill these days, but in the '70s and '80s was one of the great characters in Nashville.
By the way, I don't feel guilty sticking in some music here and there on a political blog....several pundits, including Eric Alterman, are also music critics who do "Best Of" lists etc.....also these days country music in particular has been embroiled in politics: Dixie Chicks, Willie, Merle Haggard, even George Jones, who endorsed Wesley Clark at one point. Then of course, you have the other end of the political spectrum: Toby Keith, Darryl Worley, Charlie Daniels.....
Posted by: Patsi | December 30, 2007 4:51 AM
(Note: Clear Channel led the charge against the Dixie Chicks, with many stations sponsoring CD smashing parties where rabid righties smashed all their Chicks CDs in the stations' parking lots.)
From BuzzFlash.com
Late last week (Wednesday), Clear Channel Communications Inc. (CCU) released a statement that the firm had extended the date of the pending merger agreement shareholders had approved in late September. The leveraged buyout (LBO) deal with CC Media Holdings, valued at $39.20 per share, will take the now publicly traded Clear Channel private, but is unlikely the deal will receive regulatory approval before year-end.
The "agreement providing for the acquisition of Clear Channel by CC Media Holdings, Inc., a corporation formed by private equity funds sponsored by Bain Capital Partners LLC and Thomas H. Lee Partners LP, extended to June 12, 2008, the date on which a party may terminate the merger agreement if the merger has not occurred as of that date," the Dec. 12 statement read.
The San Antonio, Texas-based media giant is the largest U.S. radio station with 1,200 full-power AM, FM, and shortwave radio stations, an additional twelve channels on XM Satellite Radio, and more than 30 television stations. According the corporate website, Clear Channel accounts for 9% of all domestic radio airplay.
Clear Channel also owns Premiere Radio Networks, Inc., the most popular radio syndication network in the United States. Premiere is home to many conservative hosts including Rush Limbaugh, Dr. Laura, Glenn Beck, and others.
And what has the blogging community abuzz is the history behind one of the buyout partners, Bain Capital. Bain was founded by none other than GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney. While Romney no longer holds a position on the board, it is believed by many sources that he still has close financial ties with the company. If the merger goes through as planned, Romney will find himself part-owner of the largest U.S. syndication network - a powerful tool for a campaigning politician.
Ping,
I too have some cognitive dissonance about Huckabee. In the 2000 and 2004 I kept hearing over and over that the bulk of the independents and moderates in both parties described themselves as fiscally conservative and socially liberal. Huckabee is exactly the opposite.
Initially I chalked it up to his wit and charm. Now I think it's more than that. He is a master of the metaphor and uses it to frame his message of morality to his base. I came to this from ideas in George Lakoff's book "Moral Politics" (thanks Patsi).
John Harwood is also leaving WSJ and going to the NYTimes. Apparently the buyout of WSJ by Murdoch is creating some conflicts for those who have appearance contracts and as they fall away from WSJ, they are being picked up by the Times and the NBC networks.
I don't think science proves there's no God..... I think just the opposite..... scientific discovery is a testament to the wonders of God, IMO
to say the world is only 5-6 thousand years old, is to say that God is lying to the scientists....
maybe Mike Huckabee needs a hearing aid....
RR,
It was a great game, but I was neutral on that one. Like Dex, I'm a Cleveland Browns fan. I'll be with the Albany Chapter of the Browns Backers today, rooting for a Browns win, and then waiting until late tonight to see if Indy can knock Tennessee out of contention. If I heard it right, the Browns' game today is meaningless. They're in if Tennessee loses, no matter what the Browns do.
Congratulations on the Pats perfect season. How can anybody not like Tom Brady? I was going to mention a certain Yankee here, but let's just say Brady is true pro and classy winner.
Ping..... so of course you will use this argument to say why you're against abortion...... and I will counter with "then why do so many religious people favor the death penalty and war?".....
it's the same old arguments going around and around.....
I don't want to waste my time or make poor Matt slog through that tired diatribe here on CList.....
it's good to see you posting again..... enjoy your church service....
Renee,
"so of course you will use this argument to say why you're against abortion...... and I will counter with "then why do so many religious people favor the death penalty and war?"...."
You really need to read George Lakoff's "Moral Politics." He's a cognitive scientist, and goes into all of this.
The perceived conflict between science and religion is because over time, science has explained things previously attributed to deity by theologians and philosophers. And will continue to do so.
But there is no conflict. The role of science is to understand the fundamental laws of nature. That's it.
one last, please....
Shake off all the fears of servile prejudices, under which weak minds are servilely crouched. Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call on her tribunal for every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason than that of blindfolded fear.
Hi gang...
I don't know all the details, however it appears the family opted for a memorial service only. There will not be viewing days and I think she will already have been cremated since it will just be a service at the Funeral Home.
As I know more I'll let you know.
On another note A&E is suppose to be showing Jesus Camp tonight. It you can stomach it and watch it ( this is one scary movie ), then remember that this is how Hitler used the youth movement to build his empire.
Hitler believed that if you got the youth young enough they would do what ever their told with no questions ask. They would die for you and God.
See the future RFN's as their taught to believe and follow what their told.
God Bless.
Morning, all! Really enjoying the discussion re: religion and science, and fall squarely in Renee and Jamie's camp on this one. Wish I could articulate these things as well as you two do....
Renee...Thanks for the titles of the 2 books you heard about on NPR. I'll try to get them from the library. Just picked up Lakoff's Don't Think of an Elephant, and will start it later today, thanks to Patsi's recommendations and dnd's comments about Moral Politics. Don't see that one in my library's catalog, but will keep searching....
Think you missed my point... Nothing about abortion was my intent. More along the lines of dnd's post that Scientist discover the wonders, and those of a million years are no different then finding the mystery of our genomic structure.
On ThisWeek, Hillary said she was: "often provided classified information."
Now since she didn't have a security clearance, clearly the law was broken. Not by her, but by whoever provided the classified information. When one gets a clearance, one signs a NDA that clearly stipulates that violation of the NDA can be a treasonable offense. Given her statement today, I wonder if there will be an investigation, a la Scootergate, as to who provided her with classified information.
Posted by: dnd | December 30, 2007 12:55 PM
Clarification: Sen Clinton said she was "often provided classified information" when she was first lady. I'm sure she has a clearance now with her work on the Senate's Armed Forces Committee.
Senators don't have a security clearance? One would think otherwise.
odd bit of irony
if she couldn't see classified information
and her docs are all classified.
I think there is more nuance in the regulations of
who gets to see what then is being portrayed.
who had more information than Shrubco and ignored it. who went to war and still wants to have more war.
this can only help Democrats. No one wants a Shrubco third term.
Morn'n KGC... Keeping the focus only on the Dem Candiadates the answer is Hillary - now by her own disclosure - And maybe she is correct on her initial assumptions? Does she give a different response when speaking with a Vet group vs College?
Do not want to rehash two days ago..
Just feel this is advantage to Edwards.
KGC,
"how is the Denver tour planning coming..."
I'm working on it. I've been mostly focusing on seedy jazz dives like El Chapultepec
http://denver.citysearch.com/profile/1823085
Or the not-so-seedy Wynkoop Brewery
http://www.wynkoop.com/
Started by Denver's mayor John Hickenlooper. Good place to meet political reporters from the Rocky and the Post.
Posted by: dnd | December 30, 2007 1:15 PM
I have my doubts that anyone who is considered a serious candidate for President would get there without a pretty thorough security check and some with more detail than others if they have sat on committees that required a clearance to see the material.
By definition the President as CIC is cleared just because they are breathing. That doesn't mean that an investigation hasn't taken place.
When I was married my ex was up for clearance as high as was available. I know the military uniforms were knocking on the doors in our neighborhood asking lots and lots of questions about the people who lived in our house. So while I didn't get an official clearance for me as an individual (he did), I'm sure he told them or they found out anything and everything they wanted to know about me.
Posted by: Jamie | December 30, 2007 1:16 PM
El Chapultepec
sounds wonderful
I'm a "seedy" kinda of gal.
Posted by: Katherine Graham Cracker | December 30, 2007 1:21 PM
Again let me clarify. Hillary's statement about how she received classified information was when she was first lady, not as senator.
And there is absolutely no nuance in the law about security clearances and the receipt of classified information. My guess is the reason that Armitage and Berger got away with the violations are due to the politics in the justice dept.
It just astounded me that Hillary would volunteer that information on national tv.
Posted by: dnd | December 30, 2007 1:22 PM
KGC,
If you love jazz and Mexican food, there is no better, more authentic place in Denver than, "the Pec."
Posted by: dnd | December 30, 2007 1:25 PM
"And there is absolutely no nuance in the law about security clearances and the receipt of classified information."
well somebody needs to tell that to Dick Cheeeney
Posted by: Katherine Graham Cracker | December 30, 2007 1:26 PM
And this supports the duplicity as Hillary is trying to craft a stonger Foreign affiars position for herself. So her early votes on Iraq based on more knowledge then all others?
Can she seperate herself from herself?
Clearances at a high level are compartmentalized. So what the senators were briefed on may certainly be different that what was received at the White House.
I want you to think about that
and what about the two dopers in the wh laura and shrub --they both have access to classifed info
Posted by: Katherine Graham Cracker | December 30, 2007 1:38 PM
what Lynne Cheney's security clearance is? On the morning of 9/11, she was in the PEOC bunker under the White House grounds. Laura Bush wasn't. I'd like to find out what her clearance for such is.
Posted by: Katherine Graham Cracker | December 30, 2007 1:39 PM
KGC,, But at least I stay in my alternate universe and work through the issue.
It seems you do not like the situation that Hillary may find herself so redirect to Bush? This is a classic tactic.
Is Pillow Talk also cleared?
The question you have to ask is what is the reason Hillary says something.. It is to position her in a certain view, All politicians play the game but Hillary is always calculating. The sorry thing is she is the darling of many, including the host of the blog, so they allow it to go by.
I can tell you right now that classified information is only classified when the powers that be deem it so. When my husband was with the Army Security Agency, he broke some code or another and some Soviet operatives moved into the apartment behind us. That was strictly classified, but the NSA guy thought I needed to know it. Want me to go to jail for that one?
On the other hand, I did have some fun with the info....My husband worked the swing shift at base. I was young and pregnant and snowed-in the week it happened. So I started opening and closing the blinds in an irregular pattern at exactly 9:00 PM every night.
Finally one of the NSA guys cornered my husband and asked WTF was going on....because a bunch more operatives were suspected of moving in the apartment building.
In the end, the head US spies thought it was kind of funny....but stupid because it might put me in an unsafe situation.
