  2. A GOOD Idea!

"ICE Campaign - 'In Case of Emergency'
We all carry our mobile phones with names & numbers stored in its memory but nobody, other than ourselves, knows which of these numbers belong to our closest family or friends.
If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn't know who to call. Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency? Hence this 'ICE' (In Case of Emergency) Campaign. The concept of 'ICE' is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations. As cell phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name 'ICE' ( In Case Of Emergency).
The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn't know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name for this purpose. In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel and hospital Staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialing the number you have stored as 'ICE.'

For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc. A great idea that will make a difference!
Let's spread the concept of ICE by storing an ICE number in our Mobile phones today!

Please forward this. It won't take too many 'forwards' before everybody will know about this. It really could save your life, or put a loved one's mind at rest. ICE will speak for you when you are not able to."

I got this as part of a group e-mail from work. I forwarded this onto a bunch of folks and will do it myself.

  3. Now all the candidates are going to want their own hostage crisis. Look at all the attention Hillary got for this. NH local TV was wall to wall coverage, plus the national networks & cable were all there. Good exposure for her, everyone else has to make a pathetic statement of prayers, support....

It may have been good news for Rudy because it distracts people from his sordid affairs.

"McCain, a Republican senator from Arizona, pointed to Kerik's performance in Iraq, along with complaints about how Giuliani treated first-responders after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, as reasons why the former mayor's presidential campaign should deserve greater scrutiny from voters.

"I don't know Mr. Kerik. I do know that I went to Baghdad shortly after the initial victory and met in Baghdad with (Ambassador Paul) Bremer and (Lt. Gen. Ricardo) Sanchez. And Kerik was there. Kerik was supposed to be there to help train the police force. He stayed two months and one day left, just up and left," McCain told reporters traveling on his campaign bus."

  9. How does one go about "teaching" abstinence? Is it a long course? Will there be tests?

    Posted by: sturgeone | December 1, 2007 7:58 AM

  10. there will be tests...but you may not know you are participating

    "By Sharon Jayson, USA TODAY
The federal government's "no sex without marriage" message isn't just for kids anymore.
Now the government is targeting unmarried adults up to age 29 as part of its abstinence-only programs, which include millions of dollars in federal money that will be available to the states under revised federal grant guidelines for 2007.

The government says the change is a clarification. But critics say it's a clear signal of a more directed policy targeting the sexual behavior of adults.

"They've stepped over the line of common sense," said James Wagoner, president of Advocates for Youth, a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit that supports sex education. "To be preaching abstinence when 90% of people are having sex is in essence to lose touch with reality. It's an ideological campaign. It has nothing to do with public health."

  12. I gotta agree w/Craig that Hillary looked presidential out in front of her house. I disagree that it's an indelible image. And the timing, Friday afternoon, couldn't be worse news-wise. It's difficult to imagine how the Clinton campaign can milk much more out of this without looking exploitative or as cheezy as Rudy explaining that he wasn't trying to hide public funding of his extra-marital affair.

Since I grew up in an era when "Good Girls Don't Do That Until They Are Married!!" managed to keep most females in squeeky clean (well almost squeeky) until at least their senior year in high school with a lot of weddings the day after graduation - 200 million for abstinance always sounds a little silly.

  17. I would prefer that the gov't stay the hell out of any kind of sex ed, but I'm not so unaware as to think that if human sexuality weren't taught in schools (at least on this side of the border) that some kids just wouldn't learn about it. My daughters, who are now young adults, learned about human sexuality from the second grade (yes, that dreaded phrase "age appropriate") but it started with the actual anatomy (the reproductive system along with the digestive system, etc.) and then (i'm thinking back here now, so, I might be a tad foggy) by 6th grade, and that would be around the age of 12, they were taught about various forms of birth control, the effectiveness, etc. In our individual case, we (hubby and I) have always just answered the questions and initiated conversations from the beginning. My older daughter is now in a healthy, loving relationship with a guy I actually LIKE (oh man.. coulda been one of those mohawkers with a ring in his lip, but PRAISE God, it wasnt!) and she's responsible and smart.

This is a systemic problem with the Goopers. It used to be that Republicans just sorta ignored sex ed. I don't agree, but at least it left it up to individuals and families. But since the marriage of the GOP and the JIM (Jesus is Mighty) much of what this administration has done is actually dangerous. To hire JIMers only to important portfolios like human sexuality, NASA, Environment, Education (yes, the world was created 5,000 years ago and man roamed the earth with dinosaurs), is leaving a legacy of stupidity to their children and grandchildren.

And that's the view from north of the border. It's great to read all your posts again (haha.. the biggest difference between a dem and a gooper is the sense of humour!) I'll have to do some wandering through the pages here.

Was good to see Craig on Hardball too. (well, on the youtube post anyway.. i can't stand an hour with Tweety.)

  30. RE the Rudy expenses debacle -- which you might have discussed and I missed -- do you think this will be fatal to him?

It should be; no Democrat would still be in the race at this point. Further, it says dishonesty with using public funds and a disturbing sense of entitlement.

How can people overlook that, and isn't it troubling since 70% of the country wants a new direction and he's early warning that his administration would be Abramoff on steroids?

Having lived in Owensboro, KY (self-proclaimed BBQ capital of the World) and Memphis, TN (home of the Memphis in May BBQ cooking championship), I can't eat the smoked meat they pass off as BBQ here. It is difficult to even find real baby back ribs at the grocery store. I think they grow the hogs too meaty. At least we don't have the controversy over whether to parboil or not , like they do in Owensboro. I am glad at least that you are finding food to your liking when out on the trail.

Senor Dooty, This is another example of this administration's complete incompetence. The British have demonstrated over and over that if you want to fight terrorism, you do it with investigation and good police work. So Bush wants to cut the funds that protect us at home so that he can race half way around the world to abuse people who never did a darn thing to him while making billions for his oil buddies.

  62. Evan Bayh, Strickland -Gov of Ohio, and Wes Clark have all got pretty good mentions as possible VPs. Previously I thought being VP wasn't that great of an office since there are other offices I believe have more power and influence. However, I have begun to think it wouldn't be such a bad jumping off place for someone who has aspirations of becoming president one day. It will probably be no one we have heard about yet although, Edwards being chosen last time kind of broke the mold.

  65. KGC, Gordon (Iowa True Blue) is solidly behind Obama. He is sometimes on a local political show on Sunday mornings. He was on the show (called the Insiders) the day he announced his support of Obama. Previous to that he touted it as a big Obama endorsement. Not so much, as far as I am concerned. Gordon is a former State Chair but I don't think anyone will support Obama just because of Gordon's support.

On-the-other hand Gordon is in a position to know about endorsements long before they are announced in the press. I'll let you know if I hear anything about this. I hope this doesn't mean Gordon will be on the Insiders tomorrow. I much prefer Jerry Crawford to any of the other Dems. He is a Hillary supporter but extremely fair in his comments. It is my absolute favorite political show with 1 Dem, 1 Rep, and a moderator. They discuss current political issues and when Jerry and Mahaffey, the Repub are on they are so professional. It is a real joy to hear about issues from people who know what they are talking about and do not shout at and over each other.

  72. Doots, I have bookmarked the link to the photos, they really are good. They brought back a memory I had about the photography contest at the state fair one year. The state fair photography contest is a really big deal and the quality of the photos is superb. Every year they have a theme and my favorite was when they selected the theme of old barns. The barns are disappearing as quickly as the family farms are disappearing. It was nice to see that at least that part of our heritage will be preserved through photos. Some of them, like the churches, are so fascinating to look at.

Quite the controversy with the culinary people. Just DON'T do what my work-buddy Bruce did, years ago when he got his first microwave.
First thing Bruce used it for was to warm up some canned beans.
He told me he dumped the beans into a microwave-safe bowl .
That was all he figured he needed as far as written instructions went.
He said he figured ten minutes on high ought to get those beans hot.
He set the timer for ten minutes on high and went in to watch the news for ten minutes.
It was a good, 1000 watt appliance, and he had beans that had exploded ...all over mostly the top of the cooking area.

But while I'm nit picking, MoDo quotes Andrew Sullivan in her column saying about Obama "In one simple image, America’s soft power has been ratcheted up not a notch, but a logarithm.” My guess is that he meant "exponentially", the inverse function of the logarithm. Logarithms flatten out as their argument increases.

Jerry Crawford, Dem on the "Insiders" this morning says, "Mitt has one of the best organized campaigns he has ever seen in the state." This is not spin and Jerry knows his stuff. He was instrumental in John Kerry's Iowa win and works for Hillary this time. However, I would not under estimate the power of the pulpit for the Huckster. And Congress is poised to give Bush more millions for this fiasco...and Hillary will smile, say GUNG HO, and give a double thumbs up. Let's see what Obama says about it...if anyone even asks him!
Even Frank Rich and Bb Schieffer are focussing on "the 'Surge' is working."
Let's see how this unfolds...another calendar year approaches, and it's about time for more rhetoric ..."we need to see where we are in June..." , then, "September is the critical month...".

Kinda like pro wrestling. That said, I thought Huckabee did pretty well on ThisWeek. Stephanopolus threw him some zingers (though none predicated on his questionable gubernatorial record), and he didn't really seriously dodge any of the question. Huckabee is banking on his charm and affability to save his bacon. Stephanopolus saved his trump card for last when he asked about Dick Morris working for his campaign. Instant meltdown.

  146. Dog: "hearing "you don't have a choice in the next election either" was astonishingly tonedeaf."

But dog, who is it that kept that mantra up? The media, that's who. Almost every top tier candidate "says" they are going to win at one time or another. They have to appear confident.

  156. Patsi: re MSM role in portraying Hillary as "inevitable" -- yes, you do have a point there. One can detect also Republican bloggers salivating at her being the candidate, on the chance she's more vulnerable.

BUT I kind of thought the "inevitable" buzz was coming from her own camp, at least her fundraisers and past supporters. And it has been very offputting.

Do not dislike the woman. I think she's formidably talented and an excellent Senator/could be a good statesman type too.

But her election means another four years, at least, of the vitriol we all suffered through during her husband's administration. Plus it would be too dynastic for me. Running the first lady does not say much for one's party having any viability, at least IMHO.

I wish she had waited another term, at least. We all need a change.

  157. dog, I've felt that the media has spun the dynasty thing also.

I do agree that the vitriol will be thick....but I think it will be no matter who we run. This Rove crowd is out of control...and, as the great Frank Zappa said, "It's not getting any smarter out there."

  161. The one major plus I can see for Hillary is her record of collegiality within the Senate. There is a good chance of major change within that body giving the Democrats dominance. The Republicans left can either be a drag on the legislation with that whole bag of tricks allowed in the Senate, or they can be cooperative with easy passage of severely needed changes.

It might not earn any applause from the left most side of the party, but it could bode well for a lot of good changes fast that she has well established relationships with Republican senators.

    Posted by: Jamie | December 2, 2007 7:58 PM

  163. Not to pick on anyone, but I am tired of hearing that electing Hillary will subject us to years of vitriol. I
have to agree with Patsi on this one. Look what the Republicans did to Kerry, McCain (one of their own), etc. I think the only way it will ever be any different is if Democrats elect someone who backs down easily and goes along with what the Republicans want. Even then, the knives will always be sharpened and at the ready.

Even though I have not decided who I will support yet, I am trying not to be distracted by the media sideshow. I personally won't hold any candidate responsible for the snark of the media. I do, however, reserve the right to provide my own snark.

  164. Zoey: that has got to be so exciting, to have a chance to make a choice that really matters in the governance of our nation.

  165. dog...

Been lurking occasionally today, and just read your post about the sweet potatoes. Let me know how you like the chili. And let me know if you tweak the recipe, and if you like your tweaked version any better.... I want dnd to let me know that, too! He sounds like an 'expert' with the different chilies/peppers!

Politically, I remain in Edwards' camp. Have neither heard nor seen anything that changes my mind. To the contrary, I share Jamie's suspicion that Obama's just not quite ready. And Hillary just leaves this feeling of 'unease' in my gut that I simply can't shake...it's a lack of trust that she says what she means and means what she says.

    Posted by: harborwoman | December 2, 2007 8:49 PM

  166. We should rank our candidates.

Mine are Obama, Edwards (very close, millimeters apart), Richardson, Biden.

On the GOP side; hoping for Huckabee or McCain. Because Giuliani is sheer ruin. I do not have a problem with Romney (altho am voting Dem), but if others say he's plastic, so be it.

    Edwards, Biden, Richardson

I won't be on much longer. My neighbor is coming over to help me figure out how to run my generator (and to finish hooking it up), in case this wind we're having takes our power out. It's already 'blinked' twice, so...

    Posted by: harborwoman | December 2, 2007 9:50 PM

  173. I just got back from a walk around part of my precinct and yes it is 17 degrees with a hearty wind. I nearly fell several times since no one except my block has cleaned their walks. Anyway, the way it shapes up is I saw 2 Hillary yard signs, 2 Obama yard signs, and 2 Mitt yard signs. I think there must be quite a quandry for some because traditionally the yard signs don't go out until after Christmas.

For all you Edwards supporters out there I can tell you he is pretty strong in the rural areas although they trend more Republican as a whole. There are still a lot of Dem county chairs and central committee members from the rural areas who have stuck with him all along. The rural precincts get more delegates than the urban ones. This causes the candidates to have to pay attention to the rural areas and their issues and not spend all their time in Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, etc. Edwards figured that out the last time and it almost worked for him.

  174. The conclusion is CLEAR: Bill Clinton DID oppose the Iraq War from the beginning and said so publicly at the time.

The media cannot let go of their own revisionist history about what the Congressional Resolution was a vote for because that spin helps to shift more of the blame for an unnecessary and spectacularly counterproductive war to someone OTHER than the media itself as it cheerleaded for it, avoided asking the pertinent questions about it and abdicated their responsibility to challenge it when it really mattered.
