Bloomberg-Lieberman?

| | Comments (71)

Might Joe Lieberman be interested in another shot at the vice presidency? If so, the former Democrat turned independent Connecticut senator has two chances.

Endorsing John McCain’s bid for the Republican presidential nomination on Monday naturally provoked speculation about a replay of Lieberman’s 2000 bid for the number two slot under Al Gore -- but this time for the GOP ticket instead of the Democrats.

But Lieberman pointed in another and more intriguing direction during television interviews about his endorsement of the Arizona senator. He went out of his way to note, if not promote, the idea that New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, a former Republican who recently turned independent, might make a third-party run.

If Republicans go hard right with someone like former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee for a nominee, Bloomberg is expected to seriously consider jumping in. A Bloomberg-Lieberman ticket as a third way for voters could be a showstopper, a bipartisan mix with Lieberman adding the foreign policy expertise that Bloomberg lacks.

  1. I don't see McCain asking Lieberman to join him on the ticket...he stated yesterday that Joe was far too valuable in the Senate....yuk.

  16. Edwards was good on the Today Show, despite what I thought was a generally nagative interview with David Gregory (who I usually like). Gregory brought up the fact that Obama has accused Edwards of taking lobbyists money....and also that people might not consider Edwards authentic because of his wealth. So would he have questioned FDR's sincerity because he was from an old rich family. Or is it just people who are born poor and do it on their own who are suspect?

    Posted by: Patsi | December 18, 2007 8:22 AM

  17. patsi, we certainly would question FDR's sincerity because of his background today - it's a different time. Hell, Kerry had to endure it, and he just married into the Heinz fortune. Democrats didn't have to take a vow of poverty to get credibility in the 20s and 30s, and didn't have to show their union cards, talk as if race, religion and sexual orientation didn't matter to them to be considered real democrats. They just had to have good ideas about getting the country through the debacle of the great depression and have enough money to run their campaigns.

Posted by: pogo Author Profile Page | December 18, 2007 8:48 AM

  18. Patsi,
Great observation. I'm kinda surprised Edwards hasn't used FDR or JFK as a response to such questions about his wealth.

"I thought the Kerry remark was actually complimentary of Obama, but nooooooooooooooo one of the Hillary haters crawls out of the woodwork and all the little sir echos start echoing the talking points. They learned well their Clinton hating lines courtesy of the neo cons and if it wins a Democratic primary, might as well use them."

    Posted by: Jamie | December 18, 2007 8:59 AM

  22. jamie - Kerry has explained himself essentially until he's blue in the face - he did mean it as a positive comment about Obama. Apparently the underlying facts aren't right, but the folks bashing him for the comments are out in left field. And the comments about his name, well, it's his name and he'sbeen lampooned about it from day one ofhis candidacy by the RWNM, led by bloviator in chief Limpballs. It IS a problem for him - not among people who give half a rational thought to it, but a problem among those who don't - how dare Kerry note that. Oh, right, he's endorsed Clinton,so he's fair game.

  26. Huckabee covered up his son's torturing of a dog.

    LA Times:

Citing new reporting and old stories, Newsweek reports that Huckabee's then-17-year-old son was implicated in the torture and hanging of a stray dog while working as a Boy Scout camp counselor in 1998. David Huckabee was fired from the job, but Newsweek reports that Huckabee, then governor, leaned on law enforcement officials to squelch a request by a local prosecutor for investigative help in the case. No charges were ever filed, and Huckabee denied any inappropriate actions.

"So why is the Republican establishment suddenly in a state of near-apoplexy about Mike Huckabee? Shouldn't they be happy? They've been cultivating evangelicals and fundamentalists for 30 years. Now they finally have a candidate who's truly part of the movement. So what's the problem?"

"Actually, that is the problem. The evangelical crowd was fine when it was just a resource to be cynically exploited every few years in demagogic anti-gay get-out-the-vote campaigns. But now the holy-rolling monster the GOP's Dr. Frankensteins have created has thrown off the shackles, fled the lab, and is currently leading in Iowa. And the party doesn't know what to do. "

  37. tweety is insane
On the December 17 edition of MSNBC's Hardball, host Chris Matthews claimed: "Every day I pick up the paper and there's another quote out there from somebody who's a wannabe, saying whatever the Clinton people told them to say apparently." Moments later, Matthews asked Financial Times U.S. managing editor Chrystia Freeland: "[A]ren't you appalled at the willingness of these people to become castratos in the eunuch chorus here or whatever they are?" Matthews made the comment in the context of discussing endorsements of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) and specifically that of former Sen. Bob Kerrey (D-NE), who made reference following a December 16 campaign event to, among other things, Sen. Barack Obama's (D-IL) middle name."

Now everything has fallen apart and Chris doesn't know who to blame. (Rove? Cheney?)

All he knows is that he HATES the Clintons, as only a Catholic Reagan Democrat can. (It's all about Monica and the blue dress.) Sex, sex, sex. It's all they think about.

  43. nash, Arianna is very often spot on in her analyses, and her current comment on the Right reaping what it's been sowing for 30 years to win elections is no exception. KNowing that Krauthammer is apoplectic about Huckleberry's rise is enough for me.

And you have a good one going about Huckleberry's son. In the south (isn't Arkansas part of it?) we didn't kill dogs who got the mange - we bathed them and put medicine on the spots and in their food. I can still smell the sulfur. And if you're gonna kill a dog to put it out of its misery - my dad had to do that to one of ours that got hit by a car and was suffering but not dying - you either take it to the vet to have it put down, or do something that causes a quick, relatively painless death. Dad shot our dog. You don't hang them. In fact, except for what I've seen in movies, I'd never heard of anyone hanging a dog, cat, bird, fish, turtle or any other pet. The real issue is whether Huckleberry suppressed the investigation and possible charges that might have resulted.

  44. I dunno, KGC....I think Catholic boys school affected both Tweety AND Russert. (So does my friend, an Italian/Catholic Republican guy here in Twangtown. This guy, by the way, still thinks Barbara Jordan should have been president. Not a bad idea, either!)

Matthews' use of this line is just disgusting: "[A]ren't you appalled at the willingness of these people to become castratos in the eunuch chorus here or whatever they are?"

I've noticed that a LOT of Repub men use that kind of language. Remember a few years back when Grover (GAG) Norquest was saying Bush and the Repubs had "neutered" the Dems like dogs? (That kind of talk makes me think the speaker is definitely a Cheeto dick.) And now of course, Cheney (who probably hasn't had sex in decades) just recently talked about Pelosi castrating the Dem men? God 'A Mighty, if there was ever a classic castrating woman, I gotta believe it would be Lynn Cheney.

At the other end of the Republican spectrum is Betty Ford, a true feminist with whom I worked with in Colo on the Equal Rights Amendment. I cannot say enough great things about this woman.

On the March 20 edition of MSNBC's Tucker, Carlson said: "[T]here's just something about her that feels castrating, overbearing, and scary." ... Rush Limbaugh has repeatedly used the expression "testicle lockbox," claiming that Clinton has one.

... Matthews previously asked on the November 13, 2006, edition of MSNBC's Hardball, if Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), the then-presumptive speaker-elect of the House of Representatives, was "going to castrate [Rep.] Steny Hoyer [D-MD]" if Hoyer were elected House majority leader in the 110th Congress.

  50. kc, catholic schools are very hard to pigeonhole - some are best known for their discipline, some for their academics, and some for nothing much more than uniforms. Nowadays, you're as likely to go into a catholic school and find no nuns or priests there, and only rare religion classes as you are to find the ruler-toting nuns that many associate with them. Little Pogo goes to one, hates the uniform, likes his teachers, and (I hope) isn't exposed to a lot of the bad stuff I hear about the local schools around here, and as anachronistic as this sounds is very respectful to the staff at the school, and that respect seems to be generalized outside of school. Although I don't think he learns as much as he should, his nationally normed tests suggest otherwise, so I can't complain too loudly, even though as you know, I don't buy the religion bit.

They will play a cut of some kind. It is totally understandable what the person making the comment is saying or means to say (whether you agree with it or not). The commentator will then turn around and use some opponents talking point to ask a question even though the talking point is the exact opposite of what you just heard.

I know they need to be provocative and stimulate conversation, but it strikes me as inherently dishonest.
