Whether For It or Against It, Clinton Remains Supportive

| | Comments (91)

The 2008 presidential campaign can now claim its first policy victim. Illegal immigrants in New York will not be getting drivers licenses.

On the eve of tonight’s Democratic debate, Hillary Rodham Clinton made sure to clean up the mess she made two weeks ago in the last showdown with her party rivals. The New York senator announced firm opposition to the licensing idea that seemed to confuse her so much in the last debate.

Even New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, who had first proposed the licenses as a way to bring illegal immigrants "out of the shadows," has abandoned his plan. That certainly made it easier for Clinton to back out.

While under attack for waffling the issue, there is a bit of topsy-turvy consistency to Clinton’s handling of the matter. First, she supported Spitzer when he was for it -- and then she supported him when he was against it.

  1. Bryan, I don't hate negative campaigning between the parties, in fact I rather enjoy it - I hate negative campaigning for the nomination that I hear being echoed against the winner of the nomination. And it's really not the first fall she's had - she's been between 39 and 49% in Rasmussen from the beginnning of October, with a pretty consistent polling in the mid-upper 40s for the last couple of weeks in October. Obama is down 7 points from his high in early October, and your boy is down 4 points from his high last week. I don''t read too much into these things, but expect they will continue to tighten until the voting begins. Jamie's Rasmussen link is very interesting to get into the data and noodle.

C'mon Craig, take your tongue out of your cheek. She said in the debate what she thought - that Spitzer was doing the right thing by trying to address a problem the the Dumya admin had neglected. I expect she still thinks that. Oh, right, that is consistency. Now John and Barack have to defend the strong positions in favor of issuing licenses to illegals they took in the debate - contrary to the position 70% of the voting public takes and that is supported by Chertoff (a.k.a. Skeltor, a.k.a. Bushco spokesman).

  2. Craig,

With regards to the ID's for illegals in New York, the fake ID industry is breathing a sigh of relief.

If they really want to bring illegals out in to the open, they can simply do it with the enticement of better paying jobs.

  3. Jeb Bush and Arnold Schwarzenegger probably two of the more popuar goopers have both supported licenses for undocumented workers and not supported it so itapparently good gooper policy to be against , support it and then possibly turn away.

Posted by: Katherine Graham Cracker | November 15, 2007 3:00 PM

  4. yeah.... I gotta go with pogo on this one.....

basically Hillary is saying that she supports whatever a governor tries to do in order to do something about undocumented workers.....

only thing where I part with pogo is blaming it all on Bushy....
IMO.... it's a pox on both parties' houses concerning any real legislation on this problem..... the extremes on both sides have made it almost impossible to have any meaningful discussions..... and of course, the MSM has done it's usual brilliant job on this topic also....

  5. I just heard the Obama statement and not exactly true.

Posted by: Katherine Graham Cracker | November 15, 2007 3:18 PM

  6. Renee

At least you understood what Clinton was trying to say. Honestly, the MSM have been milking the "Hillary mistep" for all they are worth. And Obama jumping on the bandwagon was pure opportunism. Even on the night of the last debate, she was trying to say that the Governors had to do something according to their need and citizens since the U.S. had done nothing about enforcing old laws or creating a new program. That makes her current position with Spitzer totally in line with her previous position.

KGC has it right about a plague for all the Pols. Each party, no matter what they say to the contrary, pander to their voting blocs and do nothing about the issue.

    Posted by: Jamie | November 15, 2007 3:26 PM

  7. So let's say HRC said "Eliot is way out of line here...as US Senator from New York, I am telling him right now: 'back off Spitzer! I'M the senator here and I command you to stop this nonsense and back off the idea of licensing illegals!" What's that make her look like? It makes her a BULLY!
She handled it just fine...she COULD have stomped all over the governor, and she didn't. And the end result is she and Eliot both kept their dignity , and it was dropped.
And Tim Russert is now the King Maker , of sorts, of New York politics...except this issue made both Hillary and Eliot seems sort of wimpy. But all deals like this make someone look a bit weak.
End result? Damage control report: battleship repaired, damage minor. Battleship 100%....full speed ahead.

  9. Renee,

I wasn't blaming it all on Bushy, that's what Hillary said in her response at the debate and in her sxplanation the day after. I agree with you, both parties bear blame for not addressing the issue and coming up with a workable compromise.

    Dex, you crack me up.

  10. Immigration is a huge problem for the Republicans, not so much for the Dems. The Repubs have the exploitative businesses on one hand and the racists on the other. (Their two key constituencies.)

  11. Tonight’s two-hour debate is on at 8:00 on CNN. That's 5:00 for Jamie and Katy Crack and Harborwoman . I bet Andy Rooney would tell Harborwoman to call herself "Harborgirl". Andy would say,"Harborgirl, as a name, leaves a little bit to the imagination...the name 'Harborwoman' sounds like an open case from the Bremerton Police Department..."no leads yet on the woman found floating in the harbor last month...case named "Harborwoman"...
HEY! That was Andy Rooney saying that (well...he WOULD have!), not your friendly Dexter. Speaking of which, Michael C. Hall was interviewed by Ronnie B on XM 202 today...he plays a very different kind of Dexter on Shotime...but I don't have Shotime in my package...kind of glad!

  12. Immigration as a Dem wedge issue...
The Dems need a sensible immigration policy. Licenses are just one small issue and by obsessing on it they are missing the big picture. The big picture is that they can CRUCIFY the Repubs on this issue in the general election because the Repubs will NEVER be able to reconcile the opposing views of their business and racist constituencies.

Posted by: nash Author Profile Page | November 15, 2007 4:04 PM

  13. Pogo - It's a bad one for the Dems as well because of their progressive labor folks. The unions want them and the people in building trades hate it.

BTW The Catholic church may have just thrown their members to the Dems. They have come out with a "be flexible about abortion positions" message, that opens it up for Hispanics to vote Dems or Giulliani and favoring Dems because of poverty positions.

  18. Can't one get a podcast of the beloved I-man?

I'm not exactly sure what a podcast is. I think it has something to do with alien body-snatchers.

Imus is a space alien, right? (It would explain a lot.)

  19. JAMIE: I listen to a radio show at night and you are right...the building trades are dead-set against wide-open or even tightly regulated immigration.
The construction workers call in sometimes with a familiar story...where thay could make $16 to $20 an hour in construction a short while ago, now illegals will work for $7 to $9 an hour and this cuts into work possibilities for legal US citizens.
And there is no more adamant illegal aliens haters than truck drivers, who may lose 70% of their jobs to Mexican drivers if the superhighway from Mexico to Canada becomes reality.
I'll say this: it's a true mess..a real hot potato.
I live close to US 24 . That's the main connector from Toledo to Fort Wayne. Last night a trucker called in with complaint thet 40% of the trucks on US 24 were Canadian. He didn't even want the Canadians in the US!
Now that one made me think...cuz right now there is a huge chunk of the US population who HATE the fact that espanol is spoken and signs and phone systems are bi-lingual...are we also in for an anti-Francais bias, also?

Posted by: Dexter Author Profile Page | November 15, 2007 4:21 PM

  20. Nash,

I agree the Republicans have two key constituencies which they need to balance, but I'd draw the line a little differently. I'd say they have to continue to please their business supporters, who are exploiting the immigration situation, while coddling their other racists, who fear immigrants, or anyone who doesn't look American enough for their tastes.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that there are racists on both sides of the line you were drawing.

  31. Ping,

I was speaking more to the racial hate I see among some of my supposedly devout Christian relatives. There's an assumption that anyone who has a low paying job and speaks Spanish is an illegal immigrant, who is somehow threatening to their existence.

Not to speak for Nash, but I think the original point was that some Republicans are in favor of a free-flow of immigrants, illegal or otherwise, to provide a low cost work force, and others, including my family members want the borders secured because they fear anyone who doesn't fit a certain WASPY mold.

I'll submit that everyone who opposes ILLEGAL immigration is NOT a racist.

Tim Russert told Richardson he couldn't be both a Yankee fan and a Red Sox fan. Russert was wrong. A kid who grew up playing ball when Richardson did, would have dreamed of playing centerfield in Yankee Stadium. In his adolescent years, he was exposed to the Sox and liked them too. That wasn't waffling. That was a young man recognizing and appreciating two good organizations. He's just not a fan in the "fan"atic sense of the word.

Similarly, I like the moonlight. But just because I'd like to take a walk in the moonlight with one of my ex-wives or Harborwoman, that doesn't make me a lunatic. (Or maybe it does.)

  77. As promised, here's the link to the cell phone salesman with the great voice. There are two separate clips, if you're interested and have time watch them both.

Subject: Journey of a cell phone salesman........

Watch the faces of the judges as this guy walks out on the stage. And be sure to watch Part 2 - just scroll down the page when you finish the first performance.

  78. Buchanan talking about Bill and Hillary: "When he puts her back in the wife role, he reduces her."

Any of the wives, or former wives here want to comment on that stupidity?

Tucker says the memory has faded and that's why Democrats view Bill's presidency fondly. I have to accept that because I say the same thing about their beloved Ronnie.

  79. Haven't been around for a while. Too much outrage and shock with national events after my last posting to even be able to put my thoughts and words to paper {blog} since then.

Just getting myself back in the fray and hope to have something new up this weekend.

On another note I to have seen the Nazi Tancredos new fear mongering ad.

So lets just have someone make a similar one starting off showing the Reichstadt burning. Following along the same script show someone leaving a bag by a government building and go dark while hearing an explosion.

Than use the line that if we do not wake up than the Jews will attack us again.

Than in caption say this is what Hitler said about the Jews in Nazi Germany and Tancredo's ad is saying the same thing only he's targeting Muslims and Hispanics instead of Jews.

  80. dnd....
Sheila is tied up with a new friend.....
she may come back to the blog when she has to go back to work in Palm Beach, Fl.

    I miss her here too.....

  81. Tweety just can't help himself. If there is a way to slam a Clinton, he will do it even if it means twisting the facts or acting like a complete dunce and misunderstanding her position.

    Posted by: Jamie | November 15, 2007 7:23 PM

  82. Oh goody now Edwards is for it before he was against it and now for it .... In other words exactly the same position as Clinton .

  83. I agree. Obama really seemed out of his league tonight. Floundering at times even. I believe he has been out fundraising, etc. the last few days and probably should have been getting more rest and debate prep. Hillary did great, IMO. However, I am still undecided who I will support.

  84. EdVB: I knew right away you meant Paul Potts. He's a real big-timer now...i saw him the other day...can't recall what the occasion...he sang "God Save the Queen"...mighta been that Giants. Miami football game from London, England.
I didn't see your clip yet...but he kills Ave Maria.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Good , spirited debate tonight. Nothing settlled. Obama clearly is trying to separate himself from the field as the great American hope, but it ain't washing.
Kucinich has the best message for my ears, and Dodd amazed with hos fluent espanol.
The drivers licenses issue seems like small potatoes to me in light of Iraq.
For a no-nonsense man-with-a-plan, Biden would be an interesting president. Would his grand plan for Iraq/Iran work? Who knows?
Edwards wants us to see how he is so much not like Hillary. PAC money vs. no PAC money. I honestly don't think John Q. Public cares whether or not Hillary is deep in PAC money. If they like HRC, PAC money issues are furthest from their minds.
Wouldn't Bill Richardson make a fine president?
And I miss Crazy Uncle Mike.

  85. Paul Potts has a CD out...called "One Chance". I loved the looks on Cowell et al's faces after he started to sing.

    Posted by: harborwoman | November 15, 2007 11:33 PM

  86. God, Paul Potts KILLED on that show...but it wasn't Cowell and crew...it was the British counterparts.

Posted by: Dexter Author Profile Page | November 16, 2007 12:16 AM

  87. dex...

It wasn't Simon Cowel and the crew from the US show, but I'm pretty sure he's the guy who runs the British show, too. I'll do some checking before I swear I'm right and you're wrong....

    Posted by: harborwoman | November 16, 2007 1:25 AM

  88. Yep, dex...I'm right. Take a look at the attached link. The lead judge is Simon Cowell....

  89. I've seen Paul Potts but didn't find the video there. I did find this though.

"Man Who Turned Into a Tree"

    http://www.healthbolt.net/2007/11/14/the-man-who-turned-into-a-tree/

Here it explains what he has. HPV! From a cut and lowered immune system, it says.

HPV is an STD. Ewwww....The anti-sex, overly sexed, Neo-Con crowd could show the video to promote celibacy. And mind the lesson themselves.

Glad Sheila isn't MIA any longer.

  90. This one, of Paul Potts' first audition at Britain's Got Talent, brings me to tears every time I watch it...
