Thompson Wields Firearms and Moose Chili in Latest Giuliani Attack

| | Comments (83)

BRISTOL, N.H. -- While handling firearms at a gun shop, Fred Thompson verbally took aim at Republican presidential frontrunner Rudy Giuliani on Friday.

“He simply supported just about every gun control legislation that came down the pike,” the former Tennessee senator said of the former New York mayor. “I saw he was at bill signing ceremonies with (New York Sen.) Chuck Schumer and President Clinton and others for gun control legislation over the years. Of course, he's not as outspoken about it any more.”

A Giuliani’s spokesperson avoided a direct response on the gun control issue, instead noting that as a TV actor portraying a prosecutor on NBC’s “Law and Order,” Thompson only “played the role Rudy Giuliani actually lived” (as a former federal prosecutor in New York).

Thompson and Giuliani have traded jabs for weeks over hot buttons such as immigration, abortion, and guns, but so far it is failed to produce polling gains for Thompson. Still, the cumulative effect of several GOP candidates blasting away at Giuliani’s liberal record could explain why he cannot duplicate his nationwide lead in surveys of the early-voting states – where voters are paying much closer attention.

Standing underneath a stuffed deer head at Skip's Gun & Sport Shop, Thompson did his best to boost his latest poll numbers in the state – which, at  4 percent in a University of New Hampshire survey, did not even climb above the margin of error.

"Some of my opponents have bad records or no records. I have a solid record,'' Thompson said as he munched on a bowl of moose chili.

  2. A person I always liked and respected, veteran broadcaster Hugh Downs. Downs strongly believes that people should obtain news from a variety of sources, including ones that espouse viewpoints different from their own: "it is all to easy to accept information that support your own beliefs and to discount information that supports other points of view." Conglomerate ownership of media outlets, their continual thirst for ratings and the need for short sound bites all prevent the media from communicating the full, accurate story. Just something to keep in mind.

  7. Jamie,

I enjoyed completing the Glassbooth poll. I tried to proceed without using all 20 points, but it wouldn't let me.

Dodd & Edwards were #1 & 2. My guy, Joe, was 7th, and we agreed at 67%. That's close enough.

  9. It's easy to use the 20. They don't make it real clear that if you want to give all 20 to one issue, you can. I skipped some, gave others 2, 3 and major issues 5. That combined with the follow up quiz gets pretty accurate.

  19. Dex,

I'm not looking to support either of those guys, but in reading the article, I see Romney's as the stronger case. I'm okay with a governor, who inherits a deficit, and wipes it out by increasing fees and closing corporate tax loopholes, making the claim that he did it without increasing taxes.

I wouldn't be so lenient, if he hadn't inherited a large deficit, but given that fact, I'm sure the state had to increase its revenues somehow. If he wiped out the deficit without changing income tax rates, he's got a right to trumpet that accomplishment.

  22. I just had a near Rudy experience in Nashua. I went to swim at the Nashua Raddison and Rudy was coming to give a speech or have dinner or something. I did not see him, I did not hear him. All I saw was a small crowd of people and several of his busses. I was really looking to see if Craig was there, but I didn't hang around very long. By the time I was done at the pool it seemed like the event was under way. So Craig, if you were there, sorry to miss you. Anyway Rudy doesn't interest me too much I didn't try to get in to the event, carrying my gym gear.

Note of interest. The quilting show last week drew a lot more people than Rudy. There was not a parking spot to be found for the quilting show, plenty of open spots today.

I love turkey legs and oven roasting dries out the legs too much. I suppose cuz nobody 'cept me likes the legs, so why bother worrying about them.
Our Thanksgiving was great, but next time , if we ever go there again, I will bring the two items that were sorely missed, at least by me!

  50. Bag -roasted bird? WTH? Sounds like it's gotta be good if all you guys have heard of it.
    I worked with a guy , Bill.
Bill was THE cheapest dude in the world!
He never used the vending machines ... always drove his mini-car to the discount house for the cheapest stuff, preferably from the dent-table (deep discounts on dented and ripped packaging).
Well, microwave popcorn becane the rage years ago, but Bill refused to buy it , even at the discount house.
Now some of us had plastic bowls , made for microwaving loose-pack corn. Bill was too cheap to even buy a re-usable popping bowl.
He bought some loose-pack popcorn, and kept it in his locker.
When he wanted popcorn, he would filch around in the dumpster for a McDonald's paper sack, dump in some corn and stick in the microwave oven. Inevitably it would smoke and burn and he would get a little corn that was decent enough to eat. And was it down with a dented can of generic soda from Sav-A-Lot.

  51. Oh...one time Bill found a regular paper grocery bag...the large one.
He decided to make a bag of corn.
For some reason , it popped up perfectly...he showed me, grinning like Johnny in The Shining.
It had made a half-grocery bag of popcorn.
Bill would not waste anything. It took him hours, but he ate all that popcorn. Wow...dat's a lotta corn!

“War should only be declared by the authority of the people, whose toils and treasures are to support its burdens, instead of the government which is to reap its fruits.”
