Signs Point to Third Way for Kucinich and Paul

| | Comments (161)

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani’s bus tour around New Hampshire over the weekend featured two uninvited groups at most stops -- Supporters of the former New York mayor’s Republican rival Ron Paul and those backing Democratic candidate Dennis Kucinich.

The Paul and Kucinich fans made little noise at Giuliani’s events but standing together they aggressively displayed their campaign signs for the news cameras following him. The sight of the persistent Paul-Kucinich contingent suggests an intriguing combination for a third-party ticket – and one that Kucinich himself did not rule out when asked about joining forces with Paul during a campaign stop last week at the University of New Hampshire in Durham.

“I hear that a lot, but I haven’t really thought about it,” the Ohio congressman said of talk about running with his House colleague from Texas. “I like Ron Paul. He's a real patriot. He and I will be working together in a lot of circumstances.”

Kucinich added that he is not a fierce partisan for the Democratic Party. "I don't buy into that stuff," he said. And he noted that in many lopsided House votes he and Paul often stand together against their parties – sometimes by themselves. “Kucinich-Paul. You’ll find that on more than a few roll calls.”

Paul dismisses talk about reviving his 1988 stint as presidential standard bearer for the Libertarian Party, which is set to choose a nominee in May. But if the party nominations are settled by February and the two lose their current bids, that would leave plenty of time for a third way.

While Kucinich’s pro-government philosophy and Paul’s libertarian credo might not mix at all levels, they are both passionately against the war in Iraq and dedicated to restoring congressional power under the Constitution. Running together in an independent effort would garner a lot more attention than continuing their party bids long after others have locked up the nominations.

I know that Paul, with a huge internet base, would probably head the ticket.
I've posted ad finitum about how the Iraq war is the issue we must cast our vote upon...and as Craig posted , these temporary "good" reports from Baghdad and the countryside have boosted the hawks stance, shoving the war into our back-brains.

  35. Do they pass out Republican song books over the weekend? The Huckabee column by Novak, that KGC links us to, sounds very much like something I heard Chris Matthews say this morning. I was in and out of the room, so maybe Matthews attributed his remarks to Novak's column, but he basically was saying that the media have given Huckabee a free ride and more attention than he deserves because the left-leaning media want to see a fight on the Republican side.

  42. From last thread gevan said " a victory of style over substance"

Unfortunately in the early stages of a campaign, this is what we get both from the media and the debates. It is hard to make a reasoned decision based on sound bites, but we have to do our best usually until the parties narrow it down to their top two. This often means that great candidates fall by the wayside, but that's life in the big city.

" ...Fourteen vice presidents have become president and only two sitting senators (Warren G. Harding and John F. Kennedy) have gone directly to the White House.

And I didn't want to pay for satellite radio just to hear Imus. I can hear the DirecTV gods laughing now.... I'm tellin' ya'...they gotta' LOVE Imus!

    Posted by: harborwoman | November 26, 2007 9:42 PM

  94. Craig...Any plans for an Imus show appearance yet? I'm looking forward to seeing you with him again!

    Posted by: harborwoman | November 26, 2007 9:43 PM

  95. Harbor.....what's your son's favorite channel?

    Posted by: sturgeone | November 26, 2007 9:46 PM

  96. Hey Craig-
So,what were the biggest differences between NH and Iowa you saw? The biggest surprises that you saw and did not expect (or expected and did not see)-

    Posted by: Kathy | November 26, 2007 9:47 PM

  97. sturg...For some reason, he's gotten hooked on AZN...an Asian channel, complete with subtitles.

    Posted by: harborwoman | November 26, 2007 9:50 PM

  98. I wonder if Redneck TV will have subtitles.

    Posted by: BrianInNYC | November 26, 2007 9:54 PM

  99. Harbor....a little friend of mine with Downs' loves wrestling....it's interesting to watch it with him....

    Posted by: sturgeone | November 26, 2007 9:57 PM

  100. Odds are Imus owns stock in satellite dishes of some sort or another......

    Posted by: sturgeone | November 26, 2007 10:01 PM

  101. *L* @ Brian...they'll need them for you city slickers!

    Posted by: harborwoman | November 26, 2007 10:04 PM

  102. Can't wait to see Imus' head popping up over the hee haw corn field.

    Posted by: BrianInNYC | November 26, 2007 10:09 PM

  103. sturg...Sam's interest has to do with his age and hormones, I'm pretty sure. His best friend had a beautiful Asian girlfriend...and Sam was very interested in Asian women for awhile. I've noticed that his favorite programs are historical...almost novellas, and always with multiple layers of very complicated relationships. He's trying to figure relationships out on an intellectual level, because social skills are so difficult for him.

    Posted by: harborwoman | November 26, 2007 10:10 PM

  104. My snarky friend, Brian...I just can't wait to see Imus! Next Monday...I'm pretty sure I hear the angels singing...listen closely....

    Posted by: harborwoman | November 26, 2007 10:12 PM

  105. Brian....I know there's a writer's strike, but you used that last week......

    Posted by: sturgeone | November 26, 2007 10:14 PM

  106. Oh, shoot...it was just Big 'n Rich...singing about angels....

    Posted by: harborwoman | November 26, 2007 10:15 PM

  107. It's a line worthy of being repeated!

    Posted by: BrianInNYC | November 26, 2007 10:15 PM

  108. Harborwoman, havent heard from Imus bookers, no. Looking forward to seeing him back. I do get RFD TV on my direc satellite. Watched them auction cows for several hours other day and found it weirdly fascinating. Just as you get tired of one cow, they bring out another and you think, OK one more cow.

Kathy, biggest diff between Iowa and NH? More candidates in Iowa. They tend to parachute in and out of NH but make longer multi-day swings in IA. Biggest surprise in NH? More Ron Paul yard signs than any cand of either party. In IA? Giuliani's tiny crowds.

Posted by: Craig Crawford | November 26, 2007 10:16 PM

  109. a girl took me to a cattle auction in Winston Salem once....."weirdly fascinatiing" is the phrase.....(and since she was selling a cow it was highly relevant as well.......)

    Posted by: sturgeone | November 26, 2007 10:19 PM

  110. Craig...Thanks for the belly laugh! I haven't watched a cow auction yet, but it's possible. Maybe I'll get hooked...mesmerized...like you.

I think I've reported this before, but the ONLY yard signs I've seen so far out here in the lovely PNW are Ron Paul signs. It's pretty fascinating that this seems to be the case in several areas we're aware of, don't you think??? I've seen one '08 bumper sticker...for Edwards...obviously an intelligent and discerning voter!

    Posted by: harborwoman | November 26, 2007 10:21 PM

  111. And Craig...Imus BETTER have you on soon! You were one of the few with the moral integrity (and sufficient cajones!) to stick with him from the beginning.

    Posted by: harborwoman | November 26, 2007 10:24 PM

  112. I don't suppose this is actually funny, but I can understand the impulse of the perps. Man...I dislike Ann Coulter!

  113. Sent to me by a friend...
A very self-important college freshman attending a recent football game, took it upon himself to explain to a senior citizen sitting next to him why it was impossible for the older generation to understand his generation.
"You grew up in a different world, actually an almost primitive one, " the student said, loud enough for many of those nearby to hear. "The young people of today grew up with television, jet planes, space travel, man walking on the moon, our spaceships have visited Mars. We have nuclear energy, electric and hydrogen cars, computers with DSL, BPS, light-speed processing.....and,"
When the student paused to take another drink of beer, the Senior Citizen took advantage of the break in his litany and said, "You're right, son. We didn't have those things when we were young, so we invented them. Now, you arrogant little shit, what are you doing for the next generation?
    The applause was resounding....

My brother and sister-out-law just called...they're getting married. I'll be losing a sister-out-law, but gaining a sister-in-law, and she promises we'll still misbehave!!! Oh...how wonderful...they're a fabulous couple!

    Posted by: harborwoman | November 26, 2007 11:33 PM

  131. Finally she'll be an honest woman and this cloud of shame will be lifted from your entire clan. Congrats!

Posted by: Brian In NYC | November 26, 2007 11:43 PM

  132. *L* @ Brian...They're not the type to care what others think. I've told them for years I hoped they'd have to get married for insurance purposes or whatever. Their decision has more to do with practical issues than anything else...but I'm delighted! And...as I pointed out to my brother...it's important that they legitimize this for their 'child'...an adopted mutt. He shouldn't be saddled with 'bastard' parents!

"I wonder if Redneck TV will have subtitles."

Sometimes truth is stranger then fiction...or funnies---I watch World Link TV , DirecTV 375...they'll use subtitles when interviewing US southerners, f'real!
Sturgee would get subtitles, except I heard him speak on that call-in show that Good & Mad put up here at C-List, and he hain't a-got 'nuff uv uh ay-uck-cent!

  151. From today's Bob Herbert column, NYT:

"Bush-bashing is not enough. Unless one of the Democratic candidates finds the courage to step up and offer a vision of an American future so compelling that voters head to the polls with a sense of excitement and great expectation, the Republican Party could once again capture the White House (despite its awful performance over the past eight years) with its patented mixture of snake oil and demagoguery."
