Obama's Testy Town Hall Style

| | Comments (105)

It was only a matter of time before Barack Obama yelled at somebody. The Democratic presidential contender often seems impatient, even testy, with rambling and challenging questioners at his town hall meetings. To circumvent long-winded queries, the Illinois senator opens many of these sessions admonishing the audience to remember that “I’m the only one who gets to give a speech.”

Obama finally erupted in Iowa on Sunday, getting into a spat over national security and illegal immigration with a 63-year-old woman (Click screen below for a sample).

  4. RE GOP store: it's a calendar. I thought they might actually be selling a silver spoon.

WalMart is selling a countdown to Bush's departure calendar. They may have done that with Clinton too, but it surprised me to see it...

  5. Watched the clip; don't see any problem there. Of course, if he actually answered the woman's question, that part was edited out of MSNBC soundbite. Keeping it substance-less; purely style.

I think he's right to point out he cares about protecting his kids (and all of ours) as much as Rudy Giuliani or anyone else out there.

Not sure that woman was a plant. I think she raised a concern on many voters' minds

Also: re tying closing the border to protecting us from terror: I think that's the only way the GOP could get by with harping about border enforcement, given that many large employers want their stream of sub-wage laborers.

  6. Craig,

The clip that played on MSNBC was too short to even know if there was really an argument. Senator Obama appears to be raising his voice, but he may have been speaking at that level for entire meeting. He was making a legitimate point regarding Iraq and Sadam Hussein, but it sounded like a strange way to answer the lady's question. I think when Senator Clinton does that , they call it triangulation.

(And now that I've looked up the definition of triangulation, I feel comfortable in saying it takes knowledge of a certain political calculus to pull that off.)

  8. Dog,

(I just typed this in the wrong place, so it also appears on the old thread.)

Regarding your entry on the last thread, just to play safe, Ana Marie Cox should be banned for two lifetimes. Harold Ford, Jr. should be given one, and only one, chance to come out of hiding, and explain himself. After that Imus and crew can decide if and when he should ever appear again.

Dan Rather should take Tim Russert's place in the recurring line-up, and Mr. Russert should do penance in the public square to atone for his tepid support of someone he kissed up to regularly. He should also say five Our Fathers and five Hail Marys in private, but that's a separate issue.

And our host, Craig Crawford, should be a featured guest on the December 2nd show, as well as having a scheduled, weekly time slot for calling in with campaign comments & updates.

I'm planning on taking the morning off on 12/2 just so I can tune in to WABC radio's streaming broadcast for the full four hours.

You don't like the show and I do. Sorry to be troubling you with our exuberance, but this was the forum I found with a few like-minded individuals, but wasn't titled "Imus Lovers" or anything solely dedicated to that topic. Besides, if I thought it was the second coming, I'd have taken the whole week off.

  13. It may just be me, but I do find Obama's statements and responses to be more than a little hectoring. Sure the lady was argumentative and rather naive to say the least on the issue, but he came off looking more than a little egotistical and holier than thou.

    Posted by: Jamie | November 19, 2007 2:57 PM

  14. Jamie I can understand Obama's frustration, it's hard to bare fools day in and day out and maintain a sunny disposition. Why do you think I never ran for elected office!

Did you see Face the Nation yesterday? I just watched my tivo'd copy, and was unusually disappointed in Bob Schieffer. He seemed to almost mock John Edwards for his opinions re: lobbyists and big business. I found it annoying and disingenuous...and perhaps a bit too servile, considering the big business operation he works for. I still think most of the MSM don't want Edwards to gain any traction because they're so guilty of the very things he's come out against so strongly.

Good point about Bob Schieffer. I was distracted during the show, but you're right that he seemed dismissive of Edwards as a candidate. I give Edwards credit for ignoring the tone and plowing forward with his answers and ideas.

    kgc,

To get back on topic, what was the story on that woman who asked the question? You said she admitted being there to cause trouble. Any further details? The question didn't sound that bad, other than wanting a specific answer on broad topics, and whatever else she said was unintelligible on the clip I heard.

I do have a question about the first sentence in the column above. Why was it only a matter of time before Obama yelled at somebody? Is he known for that? Or is it just that there is a sense of frustration on his part that not everyone is supporting him, and some are even pressing him for answers.

I find it presumptious on the part of any politician that starts a sentence with "the American people..." That is pretty bold for them to imply that they are speaking for 350 million or so people.

  62. dnd...Black Bean Sweet Potato Chili

2 medium-large sweet potatoes or yams
    2 T olive oil
    1 C chopped onion
    2-3 garlic cloves
1 medium red or green bell pepper, diced
2 15-oz cans black beans, drained and rinsed
1 28-oz can diced tomatoes, undrained
1-2 small fresh hot chilies, minced (or 1 4-oz can mild green chilies)
    2 t ground cumin
    1/2 t dried oregano
    salt to taste
    fresh cilantro for garnish (optional)

Bake sweet potatoes at 350 degrees until slightly firm, but not soft. When cool, peel and dice into 3/4 inch cubes. Set aside. Heat oil in soup pot or Dutch oven. Add garlic and onion and saute over medium heat until golden brown. Add remaining ingredients and heat. Cover and simmer for 15 minutes. Add diced sweet potatoes and continue to simmer until vegetables are tender, 10-15 minutes. Add salt to taste. Taste improves if allowed to stand for 1-2 hours before serving. Reheat and serve with chopped cilantro for garnish.

"If you have been in the working world and been in a position where you were not only passed over for a promotion, but are expected to train the guy who got the job ... it becomes almost a knee jerk reaction"

Thanks for the perspective. BTW, I've been passed over for promotion and expected to train the jerk who got the job. And "the jerk" has been both male and female. Fortunately for me, my resume has allowed me to bolt and keep my dignity intact. But I understand your explanation.

So here's a hypothetical: What if the republican nominee was Kay Baily Hutchinson and the dem was Edwards (or some other male). Do you think there'd still be the crossover?

  86. dnd,

I doubt it would go the other way from Dem to Rep even with the perception that Kay is one of the women who "made it". With Democratic women the sense is that the real push on "women's lib" came from our side of the aisle and our men are nicer, funnier, and better looking.

  87. Speaking of that "water to wine" trick, a body could become mighty popular in the southeast right now if they could convert wine to water.... bet they'd give you the key to the city in Atlanta.

  88. What I want to know is how come no Pat Robertson type has blamed the drought on sin? Or is it only NY that has sinners worthy of God's wrath?

  89. it's going to be interesting to see what happens to this Joe Horn story in Texas.

Posted by: Brian In NYC | November 19, 2007 10:06 PM

  90. I don't know the Joe Horn story. What's the scoop?

As far as the SE and sinners, they held a prayer meeting in Atlanta one day last week to ask God for rain, and got 1/2 inch of rain the next day.

  91. Never mind...just googled him and learned that he's the Texan who shot the two burglars.

    Posted by: harborwoman | November 19, 2007 10:13 PM

  92. Yeah the gun toting idiot who decided to appoint himself judge, jury, and executioner and murdered two people.

  94. sturg...

How far did you read about Tom Horn? He was hanged 104 years ago tomorrow. I'm betting joe won't meet the same fate...given that he's in Texas and all.

    Posted by: harborwoman | November 19, 2007 10:24 PM

  95. Sounds as though there a LOT of gun toting idiots in Texas, Brian. I'm glad I don't live there....

  96. Amen sister, amen! Speaking of guns where is aginghipster these days? Maybe he's out with Chuck Noris celebrating his "come back"

  97. Being from the deep south, I grew up around lots of guns. Pretty much everyone there has one...or many. I have a highly developed respect for them, and prefer to keep my distance from all guns. A kid I grew up with accidentally killed his sister when she and her boyfriend were target shooting. He was just a child when it happened - three, if I remember correctly. They put the gun down, he picked it up, and the rest is tragic history.

  98. Hasn't this writer's strike gone on long enough?

  99. Tired and disgusted at late-night reruns, I popped in an ancient tape of "High Noon" with Gary Cooper. A buddy sent it to me when he put all his stuff onto disc and got rid of all his tapes. I guess I had never seen it...it was damn good. BTW, the movie I mentioned a couple nights ago, the Brit cult film about two unemployed actors , is "Withnail and I".

The first year or so here in Tejas, I was stunned to see signs like this 'en up all over, even at hospitals.

  101. tt: About 20 years ago those signs started popping up in bars and stores here in Ohio, too...but I ain't never seen long barrel Colt .45s in the warnings here!

  102. Dex, that's interesting. It's been more than 20 years since I lived in Ohio. I would have never guessed.

  103. TESTY? Oh, please, Craig. We're going to have to FOIA your office to find the packages from HillBilly's campaign with this stuff in it.

She's not a nice person. Everyone knows it. What is the Yahoo front page today? He's nice - the most likable. So what does her campaign do? Grab at straws - and this is a straw - with anything even remotely suggesting he's not always 100% calm in the face of an obvious plant and then say SEE! SEE! He can be "testy" too!

Craig the only reason I read your stuff it to keep an eye on what HillBilly's campaign is really thinking. The transparency of this ridiculous - silly, really, almost comic - attempt at Clintonian Spin is yet another reason why Obama will win.

You're just as much a plant as the lady in the audience.

This is why Obama is right in taking on the DC Dem Mafia. This is why he's going to win. The voters in Iowa know authenticity when they see it, someone who's in it to win - for the right reasons - not just 'in it to win it.'

There was a Clinton book called "The Agenda." The laughable part was at the end of the day THERE WAS NO AGENDA.

So riddle me this, Batman: Why is she running? Obama's been crystal clear about it. What's her answer - in less than 10 sentences?

Otherwise, knock it off with silly crap like this and get back to being a journalist. People like you are hurting my country.
