Obama Confesses Drug Use to High School Kids

| | Comments (111)

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- There was no "boxers or briefs" moment when high school students asked Barack Obama today to talk about his human side. The Democratic presidential contender's way of identifying with kids is a far cry from Bill Clinton, who tried to be hip with a group of students in the 1992 campaign by talking about his underwear.

Instead, Obama dove right into his own drug use as a teenager. And, also unlike Clinton, he did not play it cute by saying he "didn't inhale." Instead, the Illinois senator portrayed himself as a classic slacker when growing up in Hawaii.

"I will confess to you that I was kind of a goof off in high school," Obama told students at Manchester Central High School. "I made some bad decisions … got into drinking and experimenting with drugs. There was a whole stretch of time where I didn’t apply myself. It wasn’t until I got out of high school and went to college that I started realizing, man, I wasted a lot of time,"

Obama wrote about those experiences in his memoir, "Dreams from My Father," revealing that he mostly smoked marijuana but sometimes snorted cocaine. Still, it was smart to go ahead and publicly talk about it now so that he has the option to dodge future questions by saying it's an old story, asked and answered.

  1. Drugs? Nothing that Bush didn't do, a hundred times over, when he was a lot older & knew better.

Does anyone even care about this sort of thing any more, except the Bible-belt, red-state morons?

  19. Now, this is serious—I do want to take an opportunity to come clean on a statement I made earlier this week. In an appearance on MTV, I was asked a question about my undergarments, more specifically, whether I wore boxers or briefs. I answered, "I wear briefs," which is a true statement that speaks to the current facts. [Laughter] Now, at the moment I uttered this answer I could tell there was immediate skepticism among the media and a real desire that I prove the truth right then and there of my brief assertion by making immediate, full disclosure. [Laughter] I did not show my briefs at that time out of an exaggerated and wholly inappropriate sense of my zone of personal privacy—[laughter] —which I drug up here with me from Arkansas. I want you to know tonight that I regret that deeply, and like my wonderful wife, I have been rezoned.

Therefore, I must also acknowledge that for a short time during my youth, I did in fact also wear boxer shorts. It was actually a brief period of time, and this semantic coincidence may have been the source of my confused response on MTV. [Laughter] The number of boxer shorts totaled six pair in all: three white, two striped, one baby blue with a Razorback hog and little red hogs. [Laughter]

Now, I was reminded of this fact, which I had clearly forgotten, while reading a passage about doing the laundry in my mother's book. And I am taking this opportunity to make a full and complete disclosure. I have turned all my underwear over to Mr. Fiske's office—[laughter] —including the receipts from their donation to charity and the tax deductions I took for them in 1962: $3.38. I'm also making copies of my underwear available to the news media. [Laughter] Now, naturally, since the special prosecutor has all my current underwear, I will need to buy some more. When I do that, I will keep you fully apprised as to the type, size, brand name, national origin, and fiber content. I have no further statement at this time. [Laughter]

  35. DND,

The season awards don't take into account post season achievements. At the time of voting, Rollins had led his team to the playoffs, just as Holiday and Tulowitzki did.

With regards to Tulo, he fell victim to the bias against defense in consideration to post season awards. Writers look at the power numbers only, hence the nod to Braun.

I went to MLB.com and did a side by side comparison of Rollins, Holiday and Tulowitzki. You can see the multiple categories that Rollins was superior in, while playing a more difficult position and while batting lead off...

Mr. Crawford and others in the media have done a fine job keeping the American people informed about the issues and where the candidates stand on those issues: this column is further evidence that "Trail Mix" is one of the best political columns available to the voting public. CQ is to be commended for making it free! Now: Barack Obama has been honest about his "past" use of such "drugs" as marijuana, so there is no reason to believe that the damaging information about him that columnist Robert Novak wrote the Clinton campaign is holding onto is in regards to contemporary drug use. Senator Clinton would never allow such information to be "leaked" about a fellow senator and Democrat, and certainly Mr. Crawford would not write about it if it were "leaked" to him because it is not as important to the American people as issues like health care, ending the war in Iraq, education and saving America's middle class. And Mr. Crawford would tell his readers whether or not he has a history of previous drug use because he is that kind of honest, journalist we depend upon. And Mr. Crawford would most certainly let his readers know about any contemporary drug use by him as well in this column because he that kind of honest, ethical journalist that CQ is proud to have writing for them: NOT.

Also, is he saying saying he went through his college years drug free? And a question he'll be asked sooner or later: when was the last time you purchased, and/or used an illegal substance? Once he opened the door to his illegal drug use them all questions about his illegal drug use are fair game. 79. DND,

I think the votes for all the post season awards are made public, so I will try to find a break down of who voted for whom. I am an avid, life long baseball fan and fantasy baseball participant and I think the Rockies bias has more to do with the ball park they play in vs. an east coast media thing.

Coors field has been known as the launching pad for years. There is great irony that the many casual fans will think the Rockies player get more of a benefit to their stats even though Citizen's Park was a more hitter friendly field.

Rollins has More than 20 doubles, triples and home runs, stole 40 bases and he drove in around 90 RBI's from the leadoff spot. Plus he carried his team that lost it's number 1,2 starters for chunks of the year plus the back 3 guys of their bullpen. Holliday, though playing well didn't do nearly as much.

As for the ROY, both of the top guys were midwestern guys and I know only fantasy baseball geeks knew who either player was. I would have gone with Tulo myself...

  80. OK, this is one time I wish my blog were in order so that I could have a BIG [rant].

What would I be ranting about? Why, Carole Keeton Strayhorn's son, Scott McClellan, of course. I don't believe that he didn't know that what he was feeding us was lies, lies, lies.

Furthermore, it's now time for Special Counsel, Patrick J. Fitzgerald, to get out his clipboard, a-gain! I could go on as I have over the years about this administration. The thing is, Scott's just validating that which a lot of us first suspected and then KNEW. It's insulting that the Bush administration thinks We the People are stupid.[/rant]

  83. Brian,

If you are still on, I would love to know more about this performer and this opera.

The first time I played it, I was reading something and not watching the video. I am impressed with how well she can pop those high notes...

    Posted by: Bear | November 20, 2007 11:02 PM

  84. The opera is Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute), it's one of Mozart's most famous works.

    Posted by: BrianInNYC | November 20, 2007 11:15 PM

  85. Cool, thanks for the info. At first listen I suspected Mozart but there was something in that high part that reminded me of Bach.

Is there a particular recording of her performing this piece that I should look to buy?

wasn't it a shame that Fitz took TWO YEARS to get the thing to court, as Crawdads of the world waited for "Fitzmas" ever so patiently?

  90. ...so the wife sends me out to Wal*Mart for pumpkin and spices and stuff to make pies with...
and Wal*Mart is sold out of pumpkin 2 days before Thanksgiving.
How I miss Lulu and Fred's General Store, now dark and empty.
    (Oh, for a crying emoticon!!)
So now I will have to drive at daybreak to the next town in search of pumpkin pie makings.
Guess she waited too long to shop.
I hate Wal*Mart, but with gasoline so high, I just about have to shop there, I guess...
but I do know from now on we are gonna make the long drive to a regular store at least twice a month for groceries.

  92. Dex,

Your mention of WalMart gives me an opportunity to pass on something I received at work this afternoon. It was an email encouraging us to shop at Sears because they have a generous policy in dealing with their employees who are deployed for active military duty. According to the email, Sears subsidizes the employees military pay, so they are maintained at the same level for up to two years of active duty deployment. They also continue medical benefits for the employee's spouse and dependents.

I'm not sure of the veracity of the story, but passing it on for your consideration. I know you and I are both against the reason for their deployment, but I applaud any employer who tries to accommodate our reservists, National Guardsman, and their dependents.

  93. Dexter, if it's a 24 hour Walmart, the best time to Shop is between 12-3AM because that is when they restock all of the shelves...I'm sure you can find what you need for the pie tomorrow though...

  94. EdVB,

    This is from Sears's website

Military Pay Differential and Benefits Continuation

    * In September 2004, the company extended its military pay differential (fills the gap between military pay and employer pay) and benefits continuation to 60 months for eligible employees called to duty in the Reserves or National Guard.
o Previously, policy provided 36 months of coverage.
    * While deployed, eligible employees can:
o Continue participating in SHC's life insurance, medical and dental programs.
o Receive annual merit pay increases, incentive pay.
    * SHC holds a comparable position for deployed employees for up to five years.
    * The company has encouraged and supported employees serving in the armed forces for decades.
o Records indicate that Sears provided support to employees serving in the military in 1916.
o Sears' pay differential was first instituted in 1990 for Operation Desert Shield-Storm.

  95. I just checked the Walmart website and found that they did not offer the same benefits to their employees...

Posted by: Bear Author Profile Page | November 20, 2007 11:55 PM

  96. Well Sears is certainly better than the U.S. Government and Wal-Mart at least doesn't demand money back from Vets.

I heard this on Countdown tonight.

"U.S.military to wounded soldiers: Lose an eye? You owe US money."

" The U.S. Military is demanding that thousands of wounded service personnel give back signing bonuses because they are unable to serve out their commitments.

To get people to sign up, the military gives enlistment bonuses up to $30,000 in some cases.

Now men and women who have lost arms, legs, eyesight, hearing and can no longer serve are being ordered to pay some of that money back."

Isn't that just peachy? They get a bill to pay it back because they've been so mangled that they can no longer fight. How in God's name can the government even come up with something as perverse as that?

    Yeah, yeah.....I know.

Thanks for the Web site info. The email I got suggested shopping at Sears, and finding a manager to thank them for their policy of supporting our military. Sounds like a good idea.

    Good night.

  98. OMG, another out rage. And lack of a US outrage response.

" NEWS MIDDLE EAST Saudi court punishes rape victim"

"A Saudi Arabian court has doubled a corporal punishment sentence imposed on a rape victim after she spoke out about her case.

But the decision to give a woman who was gang raped a six months jail term and 200 lashes received only mild criticism from the US on Monday."

  106. From The Energy Blog

    http://thefraserdomain.typepad.com/energy/

Where the Presidential Canidates Stand on Energy Policy

The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) has published a comparison of the energy policy positions of the 2008 presidential candidates, which range from environmentally responsible to business-as-usual.

Of the major candidates, Hilary Clinton, John Edwards and Barack Obama have strong energy policy positions while John McCain has a much weaker policy. Mitt Romney has a very weak positions on energy policy. Of the major candidates only Rudy Giuliani has not articulated an energy policy, except that he supports liquid coal, according to the LCV.

Study the League of of Conservation Voters chart on where candidates stand on energy policy and form you own opinion on who most conforms to your way of thinking.

  107. "Mr. Saunders would never type anything before checking the facts of his assertions: NOT

    Posted by: Jamie | November 20, 2007 7:25 PM

    Jamie, Mad & others,

Thanks for decoding. I wasn't sure what Mr. Saunders was trying to say. There are times when I wonder about journalists who rail against the miscreant actions of politicians and celebrities, when the journalists take a holier than thou attitude, but I don't recall Craig going down that road. Today's column is just reporting what's out there."

    Okay, girls:

No need for a decoder ring: what was presented was accurate and upfront, unlike your smarmy chatter. Really, girls, get a room.

Why not simply ask Mr. Crawford himself whether or not he and CQ stand by his impartiality in that he has never nor in a contemporary setting imbibed in illegal drug use? This is not a "hard" news story: it is a column based upon his opinions: if you want reporting, go to AP or another supposedly impartial story (there are dozens of them). Mr. Crawford whom you seek to protect ("Today's column is just reporting what's out there") is by writing an OPINION COLUMN subjecting himself to scrutinty when his column "The Trail Mix " -- is this not a ripoff of The Washington Post's "The Trail" by name when it was once "1600" -- poses a pseudo reporter's stance: it's not, he has a history, including close ties to the Clintonistas. Now the fact of the matter is that a good columnist should always put forth his perspective including his own personal history, in this case, contemporary drug use. You ask him: does Mr. Crawford contend -- as well as his employer, CQ -- that he has no contemporary drug use that might slant his take on Obama's desparate effort to get "out front" his previous drug use in anticipation of the Clinton campaign's "leak" of Obama's contemporary drug use via a Sid Vicious media manipulation?

    Ask him yourself:

    ccrawford@cq.com

Or try to figure out who at CQ to contact:

    http://www.cqpress.com/gethome.asp

    Good night, girls.
