New Hampshire Starting to Envy Iowa's Premier Status

| | Comments (23)

MANCHESTER, NH -- Call it Oprah Envy. When Barack Obama let slip the news that Oprah Winfrey plans to stump in Iowa for his Democratic presidential campaign, the Illinois senator's frustrated audience of New Hampshire supporters howled for the Chicago-based television talk show queen to come to their state too. “We’ll talk about it,” the Illinois senator said. “We’ll get her up here.”

Taking a back seat to Iowa for Oprah’s first campaign swing is not the only sign that New Hampshire is losing ground to the Hawkeye State in presidential politics. Candidates in both parties are spending more time these days battling for Iowa’s first-in-the-nation caucuses on Jan. 3.

New Hampshire has not helped its cause by playing games with the calendar, still not settling on a date for its first-in-the-nation primary. Ever since Iowa made its date official that seemed to focus the attention of the campaigns, leaving the Granite State behind.

When candidates look at recent history, they see that New Hampshire voters tend to follow what Iowa does, so they are arranging their schedules to reflect that. And, apparently, so is Oprah.

  1. oh well.....
if our status is diminished...... so be it.....

Craig..... I do agree about "the playing games with the calendar".... I've met and talked with Bill Gardner several times..... he really is a nice guy and sincerely believes in protecting NH's first in the nation primary..... but what's happening this year is dumb, IMO.....

just pick a date and get over it.....
it didn't seem it was that long ago that we held our primary in March..... but those days are obviously long gone....

  3. Thanks to all of you for being so much fun.
As I survey the amount of food and alcohol assembled for the next few days --I think you all could join in and save us from ourselves.

    Shrub's defense against McClellen's statement --
I would never use my press secretary that way...
well what about the Rumsfeld firing? Wasn't there a bunch of lying going on then?

  4. Was wondering if you were enroute to Thanksgiving festivities somewhere, kgc. It's good to 'see' you!

Just imagine if we could all pool our feasts and gab about politics (okay, and sports!) all day. Wouldn't that be fun!?!

  5. Ed...How big (or small) is Schoharie? And where is it (relative to NYC, I guess)?

  6. When the image of Obama showed up with him standing without his hand over his heart, wasn't it probed that it was not the National Anthem but some other song. I don't remember but today in the Dallas Morning News this RW A hole radio guy and they somehow give him space in the newspaper. He also was on Obama for not wearing the flag pin. I want to challenge his premis but I need help. KGC?

  7. I hope Oprah stays out of NH. She has nothing to add but her celebrity. It will just draw a bunch of people from Boston, Lowell & Worcester. Then we will have all the candidates trying to get TV stars. Who will Ron Paul get? Gilligan? Huckabee gets Walker Texas Ranger, I'm pretty sure Jackson Browne is supporting Edwards, Maybe Bill Richardson can get the Dixie Chicks.

  8. Doots
    Hope this helps
"On all occasions, in signing the National Anthem, the audience will stand facing the flag or the _leader_ in an attitude of respectful attention. Outdoors, the men will remove hats."

    and the source is here:
    http://www.menc.org/guides/patriotic/reprise.pdf

It is true that some people will 'salute' the flag as such in the anthem by placing their hands over their hearts, though in those cases, only civilians are meant to do so. Military officers/personel should do an actual military salute.

At least take three minutes to Google before you claim to knowledge of something you blatantly didn't.

Enjoy enlightenment!" from the comments section on this issue Huffington post

  9. Bowmanc,
I'm hoping Richardson can get Dr. Loco and his Rockin' Jalapeno Band

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=TD8oJusLtV0

    or maybe the Texas Tornados

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=24GZa3VB_B0

And of course the endorsement of the ol' Kinster.

If you ever run across a Davis Bynum old vine snap it up and refuse to share. Lip smacking good
I have a couple here myself

  11. Renee,
If you like old vine Zin, try Sierra Vista in El Dorado County

    http://www.sierravistawinery.com/

Madrona is also excellent. But Sierra Vista consistently has the best Zin.

I love the wine from KGC's region, but I love El Dorado more...

  12. dnd,

The Texas Tornados, not the same since Doug Sahm & Freddie Fender are gone.

  13. RR...I have a BIG back yard, so you could do more than gush about your pets, you could bring them! My dog would love the company!

  14. Bowmanc,
"The Texas Tornados, not the same since Doug Sahm & Freddie Fender are gone."

Sigh. You are right. I miss those guys. Maybe Richardson can get Willie Nelson's endorsement.

  15. HW,

It's and town and village deal. We have abut 1200 people in the Village of Schoharie and when you expand to the town boundaries, the total is about 3000. It's also the County seat for the county of the same name.

We have no standard traffic light. You'd have to travel 5 miles south to Middleburgh to find one of those things (and they have two, one on either side of a bridge that's about 500 ft. long), but there is a blinking red light where my street meets Main St. That and a school crossing guard are the only traffic devices in town.

On a map, we're about 20 miles west of Albany, but there's no straight road that could get you there. Yankee Stadium is about a three hour drive, but it's hard to get to my son's place in Brooklyn in under 4 hours.

When people in Schoharie say they're "going to the city," they usually mean Schenectady. That's about a half hour drive.

  16. kgc,

Interesting that the Anthem code spoke of men removing their hats outdoors. Those instructions obviously pre-date the current practice of wearing baseball caps everywhere.

Gentlemen, hats off for the Anthem, and stand at some form of attention. Everyone, hand over the heart for the Pledge of Allegiance.

Posted by: EdVB Author Profile Page | November 21, 2007 3:37 PM

  17. About the anthem....Whenever I go to a sporting event , I do stand up and take off my hat and put my hand over my heart. I also look around the crowd to see how many others do the same. At the very least , men should take off their hats. But , not all men do this.

  18. Just heard two pieces of newsworthy news...

    1. NH has set their primary for Jan. 8

    2. Joran Van Der Sloot has finally been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the killing of Natalee Holloway (whose dad lives in my hometown). God! If any of those boys are guilty of killing her, I really hope it's eventually proved beyond a shadow of a doubt.

    Posted by: harborwoman | November 21, 2007 4:19 PM

  19. All 3 boys in the Holloway case have now been rearrested. Don't know why yet.

  20. Democratic presidential debate scheduled for Dec. 10 in LA may not happen because of writers' strike. Beginning with HRC, the candidates have refused to cross the picket line.

  21. harborwoman,
The black bean/sweet potato chile smells great. I'm trying to let it sit for a few hours as you recommend, but my will power may fade. Quickly...

    Posted by: dnd | November 21, 2007 4:29 PM

  22. EdVB...Schoharie sounds like a wonderful town/village. It's surprisingly small. Most of us who live far from NY don't associate the state with small town life.

    Posted by: harborwoman | November 21, 2007 4:30 PM

  23. Oh, dnd...I never manage to let it sit for long before I dig in. It's good both ways. I usually enjoy the flavors of the chili that 'sat' on the second day.
