New Hampshire Makes it a Date: Jan. 8

| | Comments (65)

CONCORD, N.H. -- The earliest-ever New Hampshire presidential primary is now for certain. But the wackiest-ever campaign calendar still threatens to diminish the Granite State's first-in-the-nation status.

New Hampshire Secretary of State William Gardner's announcement late Wednesday setting Jan 8 for the state's primary balloting allows only five days of media coverage following Iowa's Jan. 3 caucuses. That makes it even more likely that Iowa's choices in the nomination races for both political parties could dramatically influence what happens in New Hampshire. Still, the next round of voting after New Hampshire is likely to come a full week later, keeping plenty of focus on the outcome.

IMPACT ON GOP FIELD: Former New York mayor and national frontrunner Rudy Giuliani could be a big loser with this schedule if a viable contender such as Mitt Romney wins Iowa. The former Massachusetts governor already has somewhat of a home state advantage in New Hampshire and a Romney win in Iowa, where he has led polls for months, could augment that advantage. Bottom Line: Giuliani either must win Iowa or hope that the nod goes to someone less threatening in New Hampshire, such as former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.

IMPACT ON DEMOCRATIC FIELD: The compressed Iowa-New Hampshire voting schedule puts more pressure on HIllary Rodham Clinton to prevent an early breakout among her rivals. At this juncture the New York senator is most worried about Barack Obama's rising support in Iowa. Bottom Line: A Obama win in Iowa could boost the Illinois senator's fortunes in New Hampshire and scramble Clinton's hopes to maintain her frontrunner status.

  1. It reads like Crunch time is going to be Iowa more than NH..agreed, chalk one up for Romney. I always felt sure Romney would win in NH anyway, but I thought he would drop off in Iowa. Maybe if they ( Giuliani and Mitt) split IA/NH it will be a dead heat as the coals are poured on in the March to February and the decision is made.

  2. I still think Huckabee may run up and snatch victory from Rudy and Mitt in Iowa. He's coming on strong.

    Posted by: harborwoman | November 21, 2007 5:19 PM

  3. ...and since this is apparently a two-horse Democrat race, voters should really study the issues before blindly choosing between HRC and Obama, because they only differ in snivelling personality quirks: they are both extreme war hawks with similar domestic agenda-proposals and ideas.
Oh, well...we are used to war by now, so we won't be distracted too much by at least five more years of the Great Iraq Experiment. OO-RAh! And Good-bye Breck Girl . See ya in The Cabinet, Bill Richardson.

  4. this is the end of "retail politics" in NH. It is just going to be full blast political ads out of the Boston TV stations. I guess it all began to unravel when the Old Man's Face fell off Cannon Mtn. in Franconia Notch. I am sorry to see that happen because as a selfish person I enjoyed having the opportunity to meet the candidates in small venus. I met Hillary (for Bill), Bob & Liz Dole, Kerry, Edwards, Clark, Gore and saw a few others along the line in the last couple of go arounds.

I say, boycott all the other states that are crowing in on New Hampshires God given right to have the first primary.

  5. I like to listen to Huckabee, but I don't agree much with him, or any of the rest of those men. If we start eliminating our choices for who we want to run against the Democrat, I would rather have a candidate run who is a better choice than a candidate who I thought was more easily beatable...kind of covering a bet, if you will.
And Huckabee would certainly be a better prez than Fred Thompson, in my thinking.

  6. LIVE FREE OR DIE, my friend! Bowmanc: Has urban-flight destroyed the hope of a working man buying a few acres and building a bungalow for a retirement home, by driving up real estate prices so that only the very-well-monied people can afford to move to there?

Posted by: Dexter Author Profile Page | November 21, 2007 5:35 PM

  7. ASK, RR, but it used to be in NH that everybody had a "camp". Some Camps were 7,000 square feet on Winnepausaukee (sp) like Mitt Romney's. Others were old Airstreams hauled out into the woods and put up on blocks. This time of year there would be a couple of whitetails hanging from the nearest tree, with the hunters inside enjoying a Rhinegold or Carling Black Label.

  8. This must be what you were talking about Dex.

Republican presidential hopeful, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney's home on Lake Winnipesaukee in Wolfeboro, N.H., Monday, July 9, 2007. Two sides of the home on the 11-acre N.H. estate, valued at more than $10 million, face the lake.

  9. Hey Bowman, How about a rundown of your opinion of Hillary and Edwards?

Josh Bolton is out of his mind, why haven't the men in the white coats come for the body before he gets anyone else killed?

Tweety just declared Oprah a man hater .. another one who should be sent to his corner for a time out.

  10. My question was just generic, but thanks for posting a very informative and educational link, Bowmanc...I did not know of this little get-away of Romney's...nor did i know he is worth so many millions. Yessirree, Bob! A man of the people! Well, the very rich people. But we have our state lotteries, so who can complain?

  12. Evening all.

It's really hard to worry too much about NH, having both lived there and now baking in ACAPULCO. To co-opt the words of Rhett Butler, Frankly, My dear, I don't give a damn.

Now that that is out of the way - it is a shame that one of the only 2 states in the union where voters get to meet candidates will be falling from its position of electoral prominence. Of course, the flip side of the coin is that now neither the corn farmers nor the loggers/snowblower operators will have the undue influence onthe electoral choices that they have had in the past, and I don't think that's such a bad idea.

I won't be around to check your responses until tomorrow, so fire away.

Posted by: pogo Author Profile Page | November 21, 2007 7:05 PM

  13. Well Pogo,

NH is more than loggers & snowblowers. I wish it still was but time & technology move in only one direction and NH is much more diverse than it once was. Its economy is more geared towards high tech in the southern portion of the state which is the more affulent area, with the exception of the really expensive vacation properties in the lakes region and in ski country.

Posted by: Bowmanc Author Profile Page | November 21, 2007 7:20 PM

  14. pogo,
Had you been here and heard Tweety say a congratulatory "good job Mr. President" for shutting down the story on the Scooter Libby pardon, you'd probably be drinking more tequila than you are in Mexico.

  21. Brian,
"In all fairness I think Tweety was being sarcastic when he said "good job Mr. Prez." "
That could be, but my perception was congratulatory with admiration for political acumen.
