The chaos in Pakistan is a chilling reminder for White House hopefuls that no matter how calculated and nuanced they might be on the war against terror, a sea change in public attitudes could always be just one international incident away.
Political violence in Pakistan and the imposition of martial law to suppress it has not yet become a full-blown crisis for American interests. But a meltdown there could provoke fears among Americans that the world is crashing in on them again, putting national security back on top as the number one issue for voters.
This is why Democrats had better be careful about catering too much to pacifists in their own party. After all, Republican presidential contenders are eagerly playing to the hawkish wing in their ranks. While that might seem out of step with the current public mood, a single unforeseen event could change that in an instant.
It Won’t Take Much to Make Voters Hawks Again

Did I miss a poll that said Kucinich and Gravel were going to be the ticket? (and that joke is probably unfair to them).
"Pacifists?" It is not pacifism to have been right about Iraq. It is certainly not pacifism to say that we didn't finish the job in Afghanistan (namely OBL's head on a pike outside the White House) before running off to satisfy Cheney's neo-con fantasies. It is not pacifism to say that we have made an $11 BILLION bet on Pakistan that appears to be going sour. When the Republicans have constantly made the wrong calls, how can the results of those wrong calls rebound to their benefit unless enabled by pundits such as yourself.

The White House is secretly thrilled by the Pakistan dictatorship. Lawyers being beaten and imprisoned? Sounds like a Chaney fantasy.
Oh, yeah. No need to be so impolitic. Just ignore those who disagree with you.
