Huckabee Faces Combat in GOP Race

| | Comments (140)

The most telling sign of Mike Huckabee’s rising fortunes in the Republican presidential contest is how party rival Mitt Romney is stepping up the attacks on the former Arkansas governor who is coming on strong for the all-important Iowa caucuses.

After going after Huckabee on immigration in Wednesday night’s GOP debate, Romney peppered his television interviews today with jabs at Huckabee’s ethics. "I know there were a number of ethical charges and actual fines and violations," the former Massachusetts governor told MSNBC. "That's a little reminiscent of the Clinton years."

Huckabee’s Republican foes have long hinted they had built meaty files on ethical questions about his Arkansas political career -- and now it looks like Romney is ready to unload. Numerous complaints were filed against Huckabee over the years, including his use of a nonprofit organization to subsidize his income and his destruction of state computer files as he left the governor’s office.

How Huckabee responds in coming days will test whether he can handle the fray. No wonder he had his pal Chuck Norris, the martial arts film star, at his side after last night’s debate.

  5. Rudy: serial adulturer, frequent transvestite, actually handled 9/11 rather poorly, makes big business deals with terrorist-funding foreigners. Used to be a liberal.

Romney: ran the most corrupt Olympics of modern times, wears sacred underwear, tacitly supports polygamy in southern Utah. Used to be a liberal.

Huckabee: one of the most corrupt governors of a southern state (and that's not easy to achieve), former preacher who couldn't keep his hands off the choir girls or out of the till, used to be fat until he discovered crystal meth.

McCain: confessed to war crimes under torture (so it must have been true.) Got swiftboated by Bush/Rove in 2000, spent the next 7 years kissing their asses. Didn't work. The right-wingsstill hates him. (But Imus loves him so he ain't dead yet.)

  7. Bear. I would say well Bill Clinton did it, when he was both a governor and president, or JFK did it, but then I would be like KC or Jamie answering a question with another question. So since I can type and chew gum at the same time I'll answer your question. First your premise is wrong. Like the governors of most states they have a 24/7 protection detail. Like a number of mayor in the larger cities they too have a 24/7 protection detail. They go where the principal goes, they don't have a say in what he does, they don't care what he does. Their only responsibility his to protect him. So it doesn't matter if it is Bill Clinton and the US Secret Service, Rudy and NYCPD, or Arnold and CHIPS, the protection detail stays with the principal. As to hiding the billing. Not sure how that would work, or what would be accomplished by hiding the records. the protection detail has to be paid. Rudy doesn't control the NYCPD, that falls under the NYC Police Commissioner, and it further falls under the person who heads up the detail. Each member of the detail completes their own travel voucher,(consisting of times, hotels, destinations, meals etc), they are then submitted on a individual basis within a short time frame. No one, certainly not me, is condoning extramarital affairs, but that isn't what this is about. And KC, you can't hide a protection detail, they are standing sitting all over the place. Just guessing but I would think Rudy's protection detail consisted of at least 25 people. Again Bear this not something that wasn't known, this is something that just hit the MSM.

  10. from the article which your refuse to read

The documents, obtained by Politico under New York’s Freedom of Information Law, show that the mayoral costs had nothing to do with the functions of the little-known city offices that defrayed his tabs, including agencies responsible for regulating loft apartments, aiding the disabled and providing lawyers for indigent defendants.

At the time, the mayor’s office refused to explain the accounting to city auditors, citing “security.”

Duh, so what? If it was thought to be a crime then why didn't the DA investigate? If your answer is well he was the mayor, well then why didn't they go after him on the day he left from being the mayor? There could have been numerous accounts, and hid them under Miscellaneous Repairs, as long as the travel was authorized, or permitted, as long as his protection detail was operating under NYCPD authority, and the city funded the travel and protection, and the travel vouchers were processed it doesn't matter.

Also as soon as I read a report that uses the words could have would have should have, that tells me they are just fishing around. But you on the other hand think this is a big story. i don't

Henry Hyde was most famous for leading the attack on Bill Clinton for immorality while calling an affair he had while in his 40s a "youthful indescretion"

The one and only time I went to a dinner where he was the speaker, he could barely stand and stumble through the speech since he was dead drunk.

Posted by: Katherine Graham Cracker | November 29, 2007 1:52 PM

  16. kc, you have correctly identified the issue, which is not whether Rudi was diddling Judi, but whether he was playing budget shenanigans.

And Fry, I'm betting that you are talking out of your ass (or BBFF as CB would say if he came around any more), and that you don't know anything about the budgeting process for mayoral security in NYC. I'll admit up front that I don't know anything about the budgeting process in NYC, but I'm willing to bet that overnight trips to protect the mayor while making personal trips to nearby towns to diddle his twinkie aren't figured into the budgeting process since most mayors keep their dicks in their pants and sleep at home when they're in town.

Posted by: pogo Author Profile Page | November 29, 2007 1:56 PM

  17. Oh, I forgot to add - Security? My ass. What appears to be the case is that he blew way over his security budget and tried to hide it by costing the trips to other agencies outside the mayor's office.

Because it was brought to his attention, that is why. He has to have it looked into, even though it has been there for ages. Hope the statues of limitations haven't expired then you'll really be pissed off. I don't expect you to know anything about how investigation work, but they are a FACT FINDING exercise. the key word here is FACTS. I know you are old, but are you sure you were around during the Salem Witch Trials. She is a witch, lets burn her at the stake. You know before you convict you have want to see the evidence. 38. Pogo,

Koch was mayor before Dikins, and since he was mayor a number of things have changed. Other than 9-11 and all the changes that brought about, Rudy was also credited for cleaning up the NY mob. He was the US Attorney in NYC.

So I am sure Koch is correct but he is coming from a reference point that we would all love to go back to, unfortunately everything has changed and I am sure so has the mayor's security detail along with anything associated with it, including travel, and how it is process. Use to be the longest line at the airport was at the ticket counter, you could sail through security, no one checked the contents of your carry on luggage. So why would we expect the mayor's travel to stay the same.

  42. Wow,

I don't know who pee'd in the CLister's Cheerio's today but we are certainly a fired up bunch.

Fry, whether you like it or not, you are condoning Rudy's infidelity. I have many other reasons to hate him and that would not hit my top 10 so it's a non issue for me.

I know a lot of holier than thou types wouldn't let the issue rest when Clinton was president. I am convinced that if Paula Jones or Monica Lewinsky were super models, Bill Clinton would have been harassed far less than he was over that issue. Rudy seems to do well with his "youthful indiscretions" so he earns the pass...is that it?

With regards to the security issue, I understand what you are saying but does that make it right? I have seen more than one public official employ someone for the express purpose of scoring cocaine and hookers for his group whenever they went out...this person was on his "security" detail. Was it ok for him to use the city's money for that purpose in this case too?

  47. KC, yeah, I agree it's Bealish, but it's an empty threat and it ain't for Congress' benefit anyway, so I guess the fact that he can't do it probably doesn't matter to most folks.

Fry, there is probably a great deal of truth to your comment that a lot has probably changed re: the mayor's security detail since Koch was mayor, but the point is, neither you nor I know diddly about that process, but the Auditor found it to be irregular and Rudi refused to explain it citing a ridiculous "security" privilege. Rudi's problem with this issue is that it looks like he tried to cover the cost of the security detail up for his Hamptons trips, he's trying to avoid the subject, but his 9/11 Tourette's Syndrome isn't getting him out of the issue's shadow.

And what has happen since then? Nadda. Now you can't say that the facts were hidden now can you and what was the outcome? Nadda. In fact if you read the report what does Rudy's people do? They don't denied the story. So you have to ask yourself why, if it was so illegal, why would they not only admit it, but continue the practice. It was out there for the world to see, so how can it now be reported as secretive if it was known back in 2001. You can't have it both ways, it can't on the one hand be hush -hush, and on the other hand being written about in the news papers back in 2001. Since Congress will be bidding Washington adieu soon for the Christmas recess, I guess Bushco will be figuring out how to move Pentagon funds around to fund the war until Congress sends him a "clean" bill, which I would like to think would happen the day after hell freezes over, but will probably be in mid January to celebrate primary season.

  96. Speaking of nonsense , or at least I am....here's an example of it. My Dad was looking at my parents checking account statement and he thought my Mom paid for some dental work she had done with my parent's joint checking account and not her own checking account. My Dad accused my Mom of this. However , my Mom told him that the money missing from their checking account was the monthly amount they each take out for spending money. She paid for her dental out of her own money. To illustrate how stupid my Dad was for jumping to conclusions about my Mom , I threw a fake tantrum. I smacked a stack of magazines and said "I WANT SOME ANSWERS!" I told my Mom I wished she wasn't a liar and that her story sounded pretty fishy to me! Of course my Dad got mad and told me to mind my own business! It was just my way of letting my Dad know how stupid I thought he was being. As for tonight's game: I don't like the Packers or the Cowboys. Sue me.

I wonder if it might be optional for the women. It would make sense the women wouldn't need to wear them after they are married but those men, well you know, they like to stray, and the garment would be a worse turnoff than a wedding ring if they got lucky. That is, unless they happened to pick up another Mormon.
