Mike Huckabee won the Republican presidential debate on Wednesday night largely because his distracted rivals failed to seize enough opportunities to undercut the former Arkansas governor’s increasing momentum.
While Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney tried to one-up each other with personal insults they almost forgot that Huckabee is the candidate on the move. As the GOP field gathered in St. Petersburg, Fla., for the debate aired on CNN they were greeted by the news of a just-released Rasmussen Reports survey showing Huckabee edging ahead for the crucial Iowa caucuses to be held on Jan. 3.
Now on CQ Politics: Debate Mosts and Bests
Huckabee faced few tough questions and remarkably few challenges from rivals in the debate. Only Romney directly took him on, criticizing his support as governor for scholarship opportunities to the children of illegal immigrants -- but Huckabee hardly broke a sweat countering the charge.
Sprinkling his performance with a trademark humor that has helped spur his rise in the Republican race, Huckabee seemed to be having more fun than anyone else on stage. At one point, when asked if Jesus would support the death penalty, the Baptist preacher neatly dodged the question by saying, "Jesus was too smart to ever run for public office."
Despite expectations that other candidates would tackle Huckabee, he was mostly left alone. This might not have been an accident. Top tier Republicans such as Giuliani and Romney are fearful of antagonizing Huckabee’s following among religious conservatives by coming down too hard on him. But that is just how Huckabee might wiggle out of their grasp – as he did in the debate and as he appears to be doing in Iowa.

The Jesus zinger was the best, but the "I would be glad to send Hillary to Mars" answer , relating to a manned Mars launch question also got a huge laugh.
Huckabee makes people comfortable and lays himself out there...the most transparent, likable one of the bunch, even though I don't agree with him about anything, he's transparent and honest. They could do much worse, and of course, he's got Falwell, Jr.'s endorsement.

"I have yet to see who Fry supports or doesn't support for his team...I guess he is too ashamed to say even he cannot find someone to support."
That is because you just don't pay attention. I have stated here many times who I want to see on the R ticket. Rudi-Huckabee. Now who I don't want to see on the top or bottom of the R ticket is Ron Paul.
Harborwoman, you're OK. Although I think they're flawed,.I do respect your opinions about Edwards. I believe it was Bob Shrum, the Dem consultant who just recently wrote a book, who claims that Kerry thought Edwards was a very weak candidate, and he was. As to why Kerry accepted him as his VP? I don't know why. Was Kerry told by the DNC that Edwards would be his VP or did Kerry believe he could carry the day on his own merits and his VP only served as window dressing. I just don't know.
Well it is time to make some coffee.

Rudi and Mike ---lol the sinner and the saint
the religious right has laughed at the idea that having a lamo low rent preacher would bring them to the election both if rudi is the top of the ticket

"a high level staffer" The General is an independent who supports both Democrats and Republicans to end "Dont ask don't tell"
He was not representing the Clinton campaign

I'm not drinking the Huckaberry-flavored Kool-aid, either, but on some issues he seems too compassionate for the far't (or far-right, as some would call them). They seem to prefer that fire-n-brimstone meanstreak.
If he was to get the GOP nom, I would have to say that he might be able to pull it off, as is EQ is quite high. Once again, charm will get you pretty far.

So what's so "neat" about that? Is Huckabee just another hypocritical "Christian" in the Party of Death or not? Judging by his refusal to answer a legitimate question, I'd say absolutely. But what else is new in the GOP?
Posted by: Sick of GOP Hypocrisy | November 29, 2007 8:00 AM
I watched that debate.....
and I have come to the conclusion that the best and brightest of the Republican party are sitting this election out...... all those bozos can't possibly be the best they have to give America.....
and I think I have lost all respect for CNN.....
the questions they picked were mostly to pander to the worst elements of the Republican party...... and having that creep ask about the Bible and giving that question to Romney was downright disgusting! And what was up with giving only 2 candidates a chance to answer any question..... they obviously wanted to get in as many questions as possible.... it didn't make for a very informative debate, IMO...
and that audience..... did CNN work them up or something..... it played right into what most Democrats think of Republicans right now..... a bunch of loudmouth yahoos....
the winner...... America.....
cuz it's obvious our next president will be a Democrat.....

I gotta agree on all points The questions were bad. Not asking each candidate each question doesn't pass the smell test. And if CNN wanted the audience to be quiet, Cooper would have said something.

but I couldn't stand it for long..... so I started lingering at the supper table and catching the last half hour of HB..... then I went down to catching only the last 15 minutes.....
I now put on Animal Planet for that 7-8 hour EST..... they have a show called "Growing Up" that features various sanctuaries raising baby wild animals..... last night it was a sanctuary in East Texas that specializes in rescuing Tigers....
I have come to enjoy watching television for that hour once again..... and if you're an animal lover.... I highly recommend it...

OK, really, who gives a crap about who won or didn't win the debate? To me it confirmed that Giliani's a liar, Mitt wouldn't know a principled stand if it bit him in the ass, McCain is the only one of the bunch with a moral stance on torture (and no chance to win the nomination) and Huckabee neatly separates his beliefs as a Republican from his beliefs as a Christian (which is very good since they can't be reconciled). The others wereonthe stage.

"Growing up" sounds like a perfect alternative to "Hardball". You get to watch young animals progressing according to their nature, while we watch a chronological adult, Peter Pan Matthews, try to equate every politician's action to some character he's seen in a movie. That's his problem with Hillary. He can't separate her from Cruella D'vil.

It was an ugly apogee in an ugly chapter of our history, wiht a wonderful outcome (or at least one that is still moving in that direction). 2 years later I started HS and 1 year after that Connor Vernon, Bull Conner's nephew, started HS and was on the football team with me. He never spoke about his uncle. McCain on torture.
Might be wrong about this, but it wasn't that long ago after water boarding became known, I recall McCain saying he wouldn't totally tied the hands of a president and remove all means of obtaining information from a suspected terrorist if it was believed that person held knowledge of a pending attack on the US. So has he changed his opinion?
Posted by: Jameson | November 29, 2007 9:46 AM
KGC - That is great news. I was a bit worried that they would get enough signatures from the red counties.
Jameson - We have a fair collection of moderates as well as proud liberals. We are really in need of a good conservative who can articulate ideas without being snarky or mean.
Fry does not qualify. He just flies in drops some inane or viscious remark that he thinks is funny followed by lol so that we will know that he was just joking about the attack, and then flies out with little to no further commentary on the issue.
Anyway, there is a "help wanted" sign out.
Look at the map: Blue=liberal; Purple=moderate; Red=conservative; and Green= third party or Environment main concern.

His tax policies in AK were regressive, he's a Chrisonazi who supports the death penalty, gun ownership and takes positions that the Savior he preaches about and the Bible he supposedly believes in condemns. Imus was raised in Arizona and McCain is a senator from AZ so it is natural for Imus to endorse McCain because of Imus's weird loyalty to his past. One must also recognize that the last several campaigns the candidates that Imus supported mostly lost. That does not bode well for McCain, not that he really has a chance anyway.

The MSM loves Huckabee because their readers/veiwers are BORED with Mitt & Rudy.
It's all about entertainment values & ratings.
Minimal attention is paid to policy positions, maximum attention is paid to scandals, competitive strategy, and rhetorical tricks.

That rag piece of new should have been headlined. "Would've, Could've, Should've". That occurred back in 2001 and this rag is now reporting it as news. There is nothing new about it, there is no there there. See the news is Rudy didn't know, there was no way for him to know. The story, the VV dislike Rudy always have. I think you once told me you were a reporter, but certainly not an investigative reporter. Why do you hate so? Not sure I ever met anyone who harbors so much hate for people she has never known. "As a former NYPD captain I can state categorically that Rudy’s security detail consisted of supervisors and detectives from the NYPD Intelligence Division which falls under the Police Commissioner’s Office on the org chart. Their overtime requests were processed through the NYPD’s Payroll Management System coded for the PD.
Any other charges to other agencies were improper and were specifically designed to avoid shedding light on his extramarital affair."

"It's all about entertainment values & ratings."
A-yup. A friend told me she thinks the reason Mitt/Rudy and Hillary/Obama are ahead in the polls is because they are the only ones who get any press coverage. And the reason they are the only ones who get press coverage is because they are flawed candidates that provide a salacious narrative for the media -- to get ratings.

tiptoe: The Republican field is the most miserable collection of losers I've ever seen in national politics. But this is not surprising.
The GOP "base" has devolved into a howling pack of religious fundamentalists, gun nuts and racists, people with bad teeth, criminal records, and confederate flags flying from their mobile homes.
The GOP is dead. The MSM is just keeping it alive on life-support.

Was Rudy the mayor? Yes. Did he receive death threats while mayor? Yes. As mayor was he authorized to have a NYCPD to provide security? Yes. This is such a no nothing story, but you KC keep on hoping. Hate is really bad for you kathrine. You really should try to lighten up a bit.

KC,
Protection details are protection details. If Rudy would have gone to Hawaii or Philadelphia, his protection detail would have gone along. So it makes no difference if he goes to the Hamptons, it doesn't matter if he is have an affair in the Hamptons, his security detail would go along to provide protection. They will be paid 24/7 no matter where Rudy went. So this silly notion about hiding the billing records for the protection detail it just doesn't make any sense. What would matter if the protection detail was ordered by Rudy to provide protection to his then paramour.

Are you being deliberately stupid?
He was hiding the destinations. As you can see he had no official business. At the time his affiar was not public. Get a gripe. Your guy is a sleazy creep who will say and do anything to get elected.
or do you like that. Do you have a poster of the Confederate flag in your bedroom?
Posted by: Katherine Graham Cracker | November 29, 2007 12:48 PM
Let me inject a bit of reality check into your discussion Fry. Would you be so willing to protect the mayor of New York, who was allowing the city of New York to pay the bills for his security while he was having an extramarital affair.
Even if he was fully justified in charging the expenses, is it really good judgment to hide the expenses in the budgets of departments that had nothing to do with the "official" reason for his travel?
If this were Bill Clinton or JFK as mayor, would you be so willing to defend the practice?
I would like a yes or no answer to those questions if you chose to address them.
To many times we are willing to condone behavior done by those candidates we like while excoriating the exact same behavior from those we dislike. Where do you stand?

Fry: You asked me if I'm a liberal. Hell, no. I'm a left-wing commie pinko radical. And I say, if Romney is wearing funny underwear, all the right-wing Christian fundamentalists that he's sucking up to ought to know about it. You can be sure that one of his GOP opponents will use this against him eventually. My money is on ratbag Rudy.

Posted by: Jamie | November 29, 2007 1:14 PM
Rudy: serial adulturer, frequent transvestite, actually handled 9/11 rather poorly, makes big business deals with terrorist-funding foreigners. Used to be a liberal.
Romney: ran the most corrupt Olympics of modern times, wears sacred underwear, tacitly supports polygamy in southern Utah. Used to be a liberal.
Huckabee: one of the most corrupt governors of a southern state (and that's not easy to achieve), former preacher who couldn't keep his hands off the choir girls or out of the till, used to be fat until he discovered crystal meth.
McCain: confessed to war crimes under torture (so it must have been true.) Got swiftboated by Bush/Rove in 2000, spent the next 7 years kissing their asses. Didn't work. The right-wingsstill hates him. (But Imus loves him so he ain't dead yet.)

Bear. I would say well Bill Clinton did it, when he was both a governor and president, or JFK did it, but then I would be like KC or Jamie answering a question with another question. So since I can type and chew gum at the same time I'll answer your question. First your premise is wrong. Like the governors of most states they have a 24/7 protection detail. Like a number of mayor in the larger cities they too have a 24/7 protection detail. They go where the principal goes, they don't have a say in what he does, they don't care what he does. Their only responsibility his to protect him. So it doesn't matter if it is Bill Clinton and the US Secret Service, Rudy and NYCPD, or Arnold and CHIPS, the protection detail stays with the principal. As to hiding the billing. Not sure how that would work, or what would be accomplished by hiding the records. the protection detail has to be paid. Rudy doesn't control the NYCPD, that falls under the NYC Police Commissioner, and it further falls under the person who heads up the detail. Each member of the detail completes their own travel voucher,(consisting of times, hotels, destinations, meals etc), they are then submitted on a individual basis within a short time frame. No one, certainly not me, is condoning extramarital affairs, but that isn't what this is about. And KC, you can't hide a protection detail, they are standing sitting all over the place. Just guessing but I would think Rudy's protection detail consisted of at least 25 people. Again Bear this not something that wasn't known, this is something that just hit the MSM.

I do not understand the Jesus comment. Is Huckabee saying that Jesus would oppose the death penalty, and that's why he wouldn't want to hold public office, where he would have to support it for political viability reasons? Is Huckabee saying that's the only reason he supports it? I like Huckabee's humor, but sometimes he comes off as a little too flip -- there are plenty of religious people to whom a flip phrase like "Jesus was too smart to run for public office" will catch in the throat.
