Granite State, Here We Come

Trail Mix journeys to and through New Hampshire this week -- yes, that's right, for Thanksgiving! Since this earlier-than-ever presidential campaign is destined to ruin Christmas and New Year's for political junkies, why not sacrifice Turkey Day as well.

What questions need to be asked of voters and candidates on the road this week in New Hampshire? Trail Mixers (whose blog urls are now posted under Blogroll in the sidebar) are welcome to make suggestions in comments. To get things started, take a look at today's NH-focused Must Reads and Big Number (also clickable, as always, in the sidebar under Links).

Today, the Trail Mix jet heads back to DC from Arizona's perfect November climate (if this is what the Northeast will feel like after global warming, BRING IT ON).

  1. Woo Hoo!

Carry this one forward so Mad sees it

Mad, That video may be the best thing you have done. I commented that it should go viral and if I were on her team I would help sans fingerprints.

Virtually every woman over 40 would immidiately vote for her while giving an evil "cackle". :-)

  2. "Arizona's perfect November" Still remember pulling into Tucson at 2 a.m. in August and seeing a bank temp sign reading 95

  3. Mad,
When you said: "This Clinton video is sort of a Rorschach test." you were so, so right.

    Craig,
Arizona's perfect in February/March, when spring training starts.

Thank you for the comments. This is by far my favorite video.

Somewhere during its creation, Hillary went from being just another candidate to being the next president. That is a psychological barrier that I have been resisting.

  5. dog,
"Another point: seeing the soundbite from Wellesley about an all girls college preparing her for the all boys club of presidential politics: that seemed very reasonable."

Hil said "an all WOMANS college preparing her for the all BOYS club"

    Kinda sexist, don't you think?

    Posted by: dnd | November 18, 2007 1:17 PM

  6. dnd,

All Woman's vs all Boys ... business for ages has been termed the "old boys network" originally meaning those that came out of the prep schools and Ivy League colleges.

The seven sisters of which Wellesley is one have always been called "womens'" colleges.

I don't see it so much sexist as a throw back to an earlier time when virtually everything including politics was run by the "Old Boys".

  7. Jamie,
I'm curious, had the gender been reversed, would you think it sexist?

I'm willing to concede that it's not sexist. Perhaps elitist.

    Posted by: dnd | November 18, 2007 2:07 PM

  8. Human rights or security security. Sounded like a easy question for the next President of the US to answer, but some on the stage seemed to believe that human rights trumped national; security. It is a shame that Mr. Blitzer didn't ask them to further explain their thinking.

  9. dog,
"But point is female students may feel they can speak out more freely (and often) without the guys present. "

That cuts both ways. And I'm not just talking about us belching, farting and telling off-color jokes ;-)

  10. dnd

Within the context of the Wellesley speech I didn't think it was sexist, just acknowledging an existing fact.

Outside of that context referring to herself as a woman and her opponents as boys would be somewhat sexist and smack more than a little of mother keeping the children in line.

I don't know the university background of the men, but Wellesley is the female counterpart to Yale and decidedly elitist even though they do lots of scholarships for promising, low income students.

I've never been one of those who thought single sex education was a bad idea. There are definite plusses for young boys taught by men. They have the positives of mentors, discipline and tolerance for behavior that would probably get them doses of ritalin in standard coed schools.

  13. Just finished watching a fabulous film...Amazing Grace...which I highly recommend to all. It's the story of William Wilberforce and his crusade to pass a law ending the slave trade in late 18th century Britain. However, the message seems both timeless and unending. There will always be those few special humans who rise above everything, including their own positions of wealth and power, to view with clarity that we are indeed all created equal and should all indeed have the opportunity to live up to our equality. I couldn't help thinking of those in power today who wish to keep 'equality' to themselves by rewarding only those they see as their elite contemporaries. Anyway, I recommend the film...and I bet you can't keep dry eyes throughout it.

I'm looking forward to seeing the movie.

  16. New Hampshire jokes. (Well, some of them are funny.)

Q: What do they call New Hampshire in Maine?
    A: New Hamster.

Q: What do they call New Hampshire in Masachusetts?
    A: Huh? Where?

The finest hospitals in New Hampshire are all in Boston. (Ditto for universities, museums, and "high culture" of all kinds.)

There are two kinds of people in new Hampshire: (A) Massachusetts tax refugees; and (B) and old-time native Yankees, who have all been displaced from their quaint farmhouses by (A) and now live in trailers. (Not "mobile homes," "trailers.")

Q: How do you know who's going to win a primary and/or general election?
A: Just go to the Dunkin' Donuts in downtown Manchester at 6AM and listen to the converstaion for about 10 minutes and you'll know.

  17. Jamie,
"There are definite plusses for young boys taught by men. "

There are programs out here that show that young girls benefit significantly from same sex classrooms. Their premise makes sense. I'm not sure the same holds for college age students, but I won't quibble if that's what some desire. My only point is that Sen. Clinton seems particularly adroit at playing the gender card and drumming up support from females that would otherwise support another candidate.

  20. Thanks for that link on Wilberforce, Jamie! Hadn't gotten around to googling him yet. I also want to learn more about the man who wrote the song "Amazing Grace"...John somebody. At least in the movie, he was a reformed slave ship owner who became Wilberforce's minister. Want to find out if that's accurate.

For now, I'm off to play hunter/gatherer at the local grocery store....

    Posted by: harborwoman | November 18, 2007 5:19 PM

  21. dnd,

Is she the one playing the card or is the MSM the ones playing it for her? It seems to be that she is just making the best out of being defined by others whether as her husband's wife by the right wing or as a candidate for President. by the commentators.

I'm supporting someone else in the primary, but think that if she is the nominee this will not be a bad thing.

  25. corey: another bad day in Detroit's Ford Field. The Lions are now back in their regular mode: losing back-to-back, and 9-1 Green Bay is coming to town Thursday. Uh -oh.

  26. Ah well , Dex. Michigan lost yesterday , the Chiefs and Lions lost today. Not much of a football week for me. But , Notre Dame won! Of course they ruined a joke my sister's priest told last week:
Did you hear that all the 7-11's in South Bend are changing their name to 1-11? A woman I work with is going to the Lions game on Thanksgiving. She's gonna root for the Packers.

  27. Actually, the pundits were commenting today over her response that NAFTA would need to be reworked since that was a break with Bill Clinton policy.

  31. I checked...the writer of the song "Amazing Grace" is John Newton, who was William Wilberforce's pastor when Wilberforce was a young boy...so the film is historically accurate in that regard.

  33. Back when I was editing the Naval Ships' Tech Manuals, the standard was 9th grade reading level. One of the hardest tasks was taking some of the engineering input written at an advanced degree level and explain it in such a way that it could be understood by a Seaman.

  36. harborwoman,
Congratulations. I hate to nit-pick but it's "da Bears" not "the Bears."

    Posted by: dnd | November 18, 2007 7:58 PM

  37. dnd...

ok...shall remember 'da Bears'...and that's as opposed to 'the Bears' or 'debeers' or even 'de swine'....

I have to confess that I've gone from Seahawks season ticket holder to fair weather fan. They were behind early in the game, so I quit watching and went to the grocery store. When I came home, they were ahead by 10 with about 3:30 to go. I left the room...didn't want to jinx their chances of actually winning. And lo and behold, they came through! YEA, SEABIRDIES!!!

    Posted by: harborwoman | November 18, 2007 8:17 PM

  38. If I were able to ask the candidates something, I would ask them to specifically state what actions they would undertake as commander-in-chief regarding Iraq. not how do they feel about iraq but what do they intend to actually do....

    Posted by: sturgeone | November 18, 2007 8:45 PM

  39. Sturg,
    Here ya go:
    http://www.richardsonforpresident.com/issues/iraq

Full disclosure, I think all of the "second tier" dem candidates have specifics about Iraq.

    Posted by: dnd | November 18, 2007 8:50 PM

  40. dnd Unless something really weird happens from the voting publc those plans will remain 2nd tier.....I like Kucinich, so what chance do I have? I guess I want to hear specifics from Hillary, Obama, and Edwards since I dont expect anything really weird from the voting public.......But Richardson's Plan is damn sure on the mark.......
I really hope something weird happens from the voting public......

    Posted by: sturgeone | November 18, 2007 9:12 PM

  41. and I would suggest that if Edwards or Obama really want to receive the nomination they need to cease trying to attack Hillary and get down to brass tacks about what they actually intend to do about Iraq, as well as the powers bushco has accumulated, and IRAQ.

    Posted by: sturgeone | November 18, 2007 9:19 PM

  42. and that old claptrap about "well I dont know what I'm going to find when I get there" just wont wash.....this president going in in 2008 better have a damn good idea of what he or she is going to do just as soon as their feet hit the deck......

    Posted by: sturgeone | November 18, 2007 9:22 PM

  43. If Edwards' plan is anything like Richardson's, then I hope he gets elected....but I'm afraid that would take something weird happening from the voting public.....I'll be glad when Iowa and NH are over so we might actually know something about all this.....

    Posted by: sturgeone | November 18, 2007 9:40 PM

  44. sturgee: good thinking...you better damn well have your ducks in a row when you walk Constitution Avenue in January 2009. It's always scary , though. I was a bit more naive in 1976 when Jimmuh got hisse'f e-lekk-ted.
he was gonna be the populist that restored all power to the people. Well...the upper middle class, anyway.
And he met a storm and wall of resistance and then the number 444 bit him in the kiester.
So maybe HRC is just being honest when she says she won't have a clue until after 1-20-09...then she'll go to ad-libbing it.
I do hope that she has more success in the 2012 popularity polls than poor Jimmuh had in 1980. Cuz we all know what happened in November 1980.
The start of the great 12 year American Nightmare.
