About The Report Card

This blog aims to reveal how college campuses across the country are participating in this year’s presidential and congressional elections. Through student-written and produced multimedia, CQ Politics will explore what students think and do during an election year.

Alex Kowalski, Managing Editor

Alex Kowalski Alex is a junior news-editorial major at UNC-Chapel Hill. He writes for campus newspapers, magazines and his food blog, readthebiscuit.com. Although he loves print journalism, he has found a new niche in online media. Following an internship at cqpolitics.com this summer, he would like to develop news sites and interactive Web-based applications. When Alex is not toiling over Oxford commas or lines of php code, he is out rowing for the university's crew team.

Angela Tchou, Content Editor

Angela Tchou Angela studies Journalism and Chinese at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she has written for The Daily Tar Heel.  Last summer, she taught English in Ecuador and worked for China Now Magazine. She spends much of her free time going on walks and cartooning. When she grows up, she wants to be a farmer.

Abby Selden

Abby Selden Abby is a junior at Belmont University in Nashville. She produces print and video content for Belmont's student news site and spent last summer as an Editorial Intern at Journal Communications, Inc., custom magazine media. She also writes articles for the Nashville Mayor's Homelessness Commission Online Newsletter. A Birmingham, Ala., native, Abby is an Honors Program student, member of Alpha Chi Honor Society and recipient of the 1st place award in On-Site News Writing at the 2007 Southeast Journalism Conference. Abby enjoys song-writing, movie trivia and volunteering at a family homeless shelter.

Mary Jean "MJ" O'Malley

Mary Jean O'Malley Mary Jean is a senior at the University of Denver studying journalism and political science. Throughout college, she has interned at the NBC affiliate in Denver, KUSA, and at C-SPAN. When not at school or work, O’Malley is involved with student government and volunteering. She studied abroad last year in Cork, Ireland, focusing on government and history. She looks forward to more international travel and service before grad school.

Jon Davenport

Jon Davenport Jon grew up in Syracuse, NY and has been following American politics since the 2000 election crisis. He graduated from the University at Buffalo with a political science degree in May 2008. He was the features editor at the school magazine Generation where he wrote about a variety of topics ranging from student protests and substandard student housing to politics and academic integrity. He is currently earning his masters degree in magazine, newspaper and online journalism at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.

Elizabeth Jensen

Elizabeth Jensen Elizabeth is a sophomore at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, double majoring in multimedia and biology. This summer she interned at a family of cable networks and ghost wrote a book. She's also written for UNC’s daily paper, The Daily Tar Heel.

Kathleen Whitlow

Kathleen Whitlow Kathleen is a Mass Communications major at Virginia Commonwealth University with a concentration in Public Relations. She also works as a Web 2.0 marketing specialist and copywriter for NetSearch Direct, writing articles, press releases, web content and blogs, as well as a columnist and editorial assistant for a company that produces River City Richmond, West Ends Best and Chesterfield Living magazines. Hailey Stuart

Hailey StuartHailey is a junior at Virginia Commonwealth University majoring in Mass Communications with a focus in journalism. She is the secretary for VCU's chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, a writer for the campus magazine, INK, and a member of VCU's Rugby team. She was previously the editor of the features section of Indiana University of Pennsylvania's campus newspaper, The Penn. Hailey enjoys photography and video editing.

Jeremy Pennycook

Jeremy PennycookJeremy is a graduate student at Arizona State's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism. He was born and raised by British parents in Tennessee, where he received his B.A. in History from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.  Starting out in film, Jeremy now seeks to combine his knowledge of the world with his love of visuals. He has worked for the Tennessee Journalist, a non-fiction TV production house, and on the set of an independent movie. In his downtime, Jeremy is an avid musican who loves to jam out to anything funky.

Evan Wyloge

Using written and visual media, Evan Wyloge seeks to contribute to an elevated discourse of politics, art, music, linguistics, gastronomy and bicycle culture — particularly where these issues converge. In addition to being a freelance journalist and longtime Arizona resident, Evan is currently a graduate student at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University.

George Washington University students

From the School of Media and Public Affairs at The George Washington University, Professor Carin Dessauer's Changing Media Landscapes class will report on political happenings on GW's campus, in the heart of the nation's capital. In addition to being neighbors with senators, diplomats, not to mention the president himself, GW is home to a student body ranked among the most politically active in the country.
