Health Care Poll: Current System is OK

Almost half of voters now rate the U.S. health care system as good or excellent, a new Rasmussen poll reports, while only 38 percent favor the health care legislation now moving through Congress.

The poll of 1,000 voters, conducted Nov. 24, showed 49 percent rate the current health care system as good or excellent, compared with 44 percent in October, 35 percent in May and 29 percent 18 months ago. The telephone survey found that 27 percent currently rate it as poor.

Even with the low favorability regarding health care legislation, 50 percent said it's important for Congress to pass a bill this year. Still, that number is down 11 points from 61 percent in October.

Despite the positive ratings on U.S. health care, 53 percent of voters said major changes are needed in health care, including 13 percent who want to scrap the status quo and start over again. Thirty-seven percent said only minor changes are needed and 7 percent said no changes are needed.

When asked what is the biggest problem with health care today, 62 percent cited cost, 18 percent said lack of universal coverage, 6 percent said the inconvenience of scheduling, and 5 percent cited the quality of care.

The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
