A Virginia Commonwealth University poll conducted Oct. 21-25 gives Republican Bob McDonnell an 18-point lead over Democrat Creigh Deeds, the latest survey to suggest that McDonnell is headed for a big victory in the once-close contest.

The survey of 625 voters who are likely to vote on Nov. 3 gives McDonnell 54 percent of the vote and Deeds 36 percent of the vote. By wide margins, Respondents prefer McDonnell to Deeds on the issues of handling economic development, state budget policy, transportation and education.

By a 56 percent to 29 percent margin, self-described political independents back McDonnell over Deeds.

The Virginia electorate is divided on President Obama, who campaigned for Deeds on Tuesday. According to the poll, 49 percent think the president is doing an excellent or good job and 48 percent say he is doing a fair or poor job.

CQ Politics rates the Virginia governor's race as Leans Republican.

  1. These numbers make sense. Seems like voters do still have some political saviness. Deeds is and was a weak Politician. He has no signature issue. No wonder nobody is enthuisatic about him.

  2. The survey of 625 voters who are likely to vote on Nov. 3

The low number of respondents indicates that the weighting in this poll is critical.

Although such a clear majority, and especially such strong numbers among independents is good news for McDonnell, one should not be surprised if the actual election returns are much closer.
