Poll: McDonnell Leads Deeds By Seven

Creigh Deeds, the Democratic nominee for Virginia governor, must be wishing that some of the popularity of President Obama and outgoing Gov. Tim Kaine rubs off on him in the next three weeks.

A Rasmussen Reports survey conducted Oct. 12 showed that Deeds continues to trail Republican nominee Bob McDonnell ahead of the Nov. 3 election, even as narrow majorities of Virginia voters also approve of the job performances of Democrats Obama and Kaine.

The latest survey, which was conducted of 500 registered voters who say they are likely to vote, had McDonnell leading Deeds, 50 percent to 43 percent. That's consistent with recent surveys that have pegged McDonnell's lead in the high single digits.

Deeds continues to be burdened by a high disapproval rating. Just as many respondents (47 percent) said that they have an unfavorable impression of Deeds as have a favorable impression. For McDonnell, the numbers are 59 percent very/somewhat favorable and 34 percent very/somewhat unfavorable.

By large margins, voters trust McDonnell over Deeds to handle the tax issue and restrain government spending.

McDonnell has a narrow lead on the transportation issue. He has proposed a detailed transportation plan that Deeds says is unworkable and would cut education funding. McDonnell says Deeds' transportation ideas lack specifics and would require tax increases to implement.

CQ Politics presently rates the Virginia governor's race as Leans Republican, which means that McDonnell has a slight advantage in a highly competitive race.
