Most Voters Not Inclined To Re-Elect Incumbents to Congress

Voters are in an anti-incumbent mood, giving a slight edge to Republicans running for Congress next year, according to a Public Policy Polling survey conducted Aug. 27-30.

Forty-five percent of voters surveyed said they would vote for the Republican candidate for the House or Senate if the election were held now, and 41 percent said they would vote for the Democrat, PPP said.

Forty-seven percent of voters responding to the survey said they would vote for the incumbent, a figure that is usually around 60 percent, PPP said.

"A lot of recent polling on individual Senate races has suggested Democrats might be in trouble next year and these numbers show that to be more broadly true," said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. "There's a lot of discontent out there and when that's the case the party in power pretty inevitably gets the blame."

Still, voters are not happy with either of the two major parties. Thirty-six percent of voters say they approve of the job Democrats in Congress have done, and 32 percent approve of the GOP's performance. The two parties combined get a 25 percent approval rating from independent voters.

The PPP survey was based on answers from 596 registered voters nationwide and carries a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

  1. This is why there will be the emergence of the independent elected leader this election. More and more of them are surfacing and making an impact in their various states. In Arkansas it is happening in the Senate Race. . And evidently, Senator Lincoln knows this and is worried. The 12 GOP's clowns that have announced their intention to take her seat don't worry her. It is Trevor Drown from Russellville the former Green Beret has galvanized many of the independents within the state.

Today she will hold her first townhall meeting. Where at? Russellville. Where was she a month ago? Russellville. When was the last time beofre that she was in Russellville? Over thre years ago. Yep, she is worried about the independents.

Blanche Lincoln is trying to hang on to her seat and is in such an awkward spot. Her only saving grace is to vote for corporate America interests because they give her the money. With that she hopes she can stem the tide of dissatisfied Arkansans across the state. So far she may be facing a primary challenger and the survivor of the 12 candidates running as the Republican Candidate. They have shown their true colors, by racist comments, elitism and infighting. Not to mention a lack of funding. The winner of that race will join Lincoln, a to be named Green Party Candidate and the Independent Candidate Trevor Drown. With so many independents unhappy in Arkansas, and favoring Drown, known as a common man for the people, it will be difficult for Lincoln to spend her way back to Washington. Her only saving grace at this point is to continue to pork up on the contributions and try and spin some kind of story that she really cares for Arkansas. However, there is a point where even too much money becomes obscene and people realize she is bought and paid for. That point is rapidly approaching.
