President Gets Low Marks on Health, High Marks on Iraq

U.S. adults have serious misgivings about how President Obama is handling the government's ballooning budget deficit, with 58 percent saying they disapprove and 38 percent saying they approve, according to a Gallup poll taken Sept. 11-13.

The disapproval rating for the president is higher than his approval rating on two other issues, healthcare policy (52 percent to 43 percent) and the economy (51 percent to 46 percent), Gallup said.

On four other issues, his approval rating is higher than disapproval:

Iraq, 56 percent to 38 percent;

Environment, 54 percent to 33 percent;

Energy, 50 percent to 37 percent;

Afghanistan, 49 percent to 32 percent.

"Despite the intensity with which the healthcare debate has been waged in recent months, and President Obama's ongoing involvement in that debate, there has been little change in the way Americans view Obama's handling of healthcare policy across Gallup surveys conducted in July and August, and in the current Sept. 11-13 survey," Gallup said.

The poll was based on telephone interviews with 1,030 adults nationwide and carries a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
