Polls Show Support, Questions About Sotomayor

Americans favor Senate confirmation of Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor by 53 to 33 percent, according to a Gallup poll conducted July 10-12. Thirteen percent had no opinion.

A CBS News poll conducted July 9-12 said 30 percent believed Sotomayor should be confirmed compared to 14 percent who disagreed, but 52 percent responded that they couldn't say yet.

When it comes to whether the public views her favorably or not, a different question than whether she should be confirmed, the CBS survey says 62 percent of the public are undecided or haven't heard enough. For the rest, 23 percent see her favorable and 15 percent do not.

The Gallup poll notes opinion about Sotomayor has changed little since the nomination was announced, but while the percentage of those opposed has gone up from 28 percent to 33 percent, those in favor slipped a point. While Democrats predictably favor Sotomayor and Republicans oppose her, independents come down on her side by 53 percent to 33 percent.

However, although its figure is not as high as that of CBS, when respondents were asked whether they viewed her favorably or not, 36 percent had no opinion. Her favorable to unfavorable ratio was 38 percent to 26 percent.

CBS found that two-thirds of Americans - including majorities of Republicans and Democrats - believe it is important to have another woman on the court, and just over half said the same about a Hispanic.
