President Obama's approval-to-disapproval numbers have dropped to 54 percent to 38 percent, down from 62 percent to 31 percent in early June, and voters disapprove of how he's handling health care by 45 percent to 43 percent, according to a Fox News/Opinion Dynamics poll conducted July 21-22. The margin of error is 3 points.
One factor in the erosion of Obama's marks is that independents now approve of his performance by a 54 percent to 36 percent ratio, a significant falloff from the 66 percent to 26 percent he enjoyed in June.
Voters are split, 49 percent to 48 percent, on whether they want Congress to pass a major health care overhaul this year. Fifty-one percent don't think the Obama administration has a clear plan for health care. Asked whether they favored or opposed the package being put together on Capitol Hill based on what they know, voters oppose it 47 percent to 36 percent.
Obama does better with voters on the economy, with 50 percent expressing approval while 43 percent disagree. Although it sounds contradictory, 53 percent said they do not believe Obama has a clear plan for fixing the economy.
Although many polls have found increasing concern about the deficit and government spending, voters in this survey still give Obama a pass for the size of the deficit, with 53 percent saying Bush is more responsible than Obama for its current size. Twenty-eight percent blame Obama.
In a similar finding to a Gallup poll we posted earlier, a plurality of voters believe the economy would be about the same if the economic stimulus plan had not been passed.
He also fares better than the Republican Party, although the poll's measure for them was favorability. Fifty-three percent view the GOP unfavorably compared to 36 percent who see it in a positive light. Democrats have the approval of 50 percent compared to 41 percent who see them negatively. As far as Congress, voters disapprove of the job it's doing by 60 percent to 30 percent.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is viewed unfavorably by 47 percent to 29 percent, although 24 percent either "can't say" or never heard of her.
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is viewed unfavorably by 51 percent while 38 percent see her positively with 11 percent in the "can't say" or never heard of her category. (Only 3 percent never heard of her). In March, voters were evenly split in their views of her. She still gets a favorable rating from 67 percent of Republicans by 55 percent of independents view her negatively.
