Nearly Two-Thirds Say Palin Not Fit to be President

Americans say by 65 percent to 22 percent that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin does not have the ability to be an effective president, according to a CBS News poll conducted July 9-12.

Eighty-six percent of Democrats predictably hold that view, while independents agree by 55 percent to 30 percent. Even Republicans don't think she's equipped for the job by a 51 percent to 33 percent margin. Pluralities among all those groups - Democrats, Republicans and independents, don't think she will run for President in 2012.

Fifty-two percent believe Palin resigned because she thought it was better for her political career compared to 24 percent who said her motive was that it was better for Alaska.

Palin is viewed unfavorably by 37 percent and favorably by 23 percent with 39 percent saying they were undecided or didn't know enough about her. Republicans view her favorably by 38 percent to 15 percent with 45 percent noncommittal, Democrats view her unfavorably by 56 percent to 11 percent with 31 percent unsure, and independents see her unfavorably by 33 percent to 24 percent with 42 percent unsure.

The public was split as to whether Palin, as she contends, got rougher treatment than other politicians. Forty-six percent said the treatment was harder and 44 percent said it was about the same that other political figures got.
