Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is statistically tied with Rep. Carolyn Maloney when matched up in a Democratic primary in 2010, according to a Marist poll conducted June 23-29.
Gillibrand would beat King 48 percent to 32 percent with 20 percent undecided. But against former Gov. George Pataki, who New York papers say has talked with GOP national leaders about running, Gillibrand's margin is only 46 percent to 42 percent with 12 percent undecided. The margin of error is 3 points.
If the Democratic primary were held today, Maloney leads Gillibrand, 38 percent to 37 percent with 25 percent undecided. Two months ago, Gillibrand led 36 percent to 31 percent with a third undecided.
A third of New York voters still do not know Gillibrand well enough to have an opinion of her. Twenty-four percent say she is doing an excellent or good job, while 43 precent rate her fair or poor. In May, Marist had found that 43 percent were unsure of how they viewed Gillibrand and 19 percent viewed her favorably.
