Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee leads the pack of potential GOP presidential contenders for 2012, according to a Washington Post/ABC News poll of self-identified Republicans and Republican-leaners conducted July 15-18. The margin of error is 3 points.

He is followed by former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney at 21 percent, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin at 19 percent and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich at 10 percent. Everyone else polls less than "no opinion" which got 6 percent, including Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, about him there has been speculation as a contender for 2012. He got 1 percent.
A Gallup poll conducted July 10-12 had the pecking order led by Romney, followed by Palin, Huckabee and Gingrich in that order.
Fifty-three percent of Americans have an unfavorable view of Palin, who is stepping down from her job effective Sunday, compared to 40 percent who view her favorably. The Palin question was asked of the entire sample, not just Republicans.
The category of those poll who feel the most intense in their views are those who "strongly" see her in an unfavorable light - 34 percent. All the other categories "strongly" favorable or "somewhat" favorably or unfavorably are in the 20 percent range.
Respondents say by 57 percent to 37 percent she does not understand complex issues and by 54 percent to 40 percent she is not a strong leader. They divide evenly at 47 percent on whether she understands "the problems of people like you" and by say by 48 percent to 47 percent that she shares the values of those polled. Her best marks are the 52 percent who say she is honest and trustworthy compared to 40 percent who disagree.
A CBS News poll conducted July 9-12 said Americans believed by 65 percent to 22 percent that Palin was not fit to be president.
