Christie Has Big Lead in Race for NJ GOP Governor Nomination

Former U.S. Attorney Chris Christie leads former Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan 54 percent to 30 percent in the race for the GOP gubernatorial nomination that will be decided in tomorrow's primary, according to a Fairleigh Dickinson University poll conducted May 26-30.

The poll also looked at the ideological breakdown and stands on issue between those who support Christie or Lonegan. Christie is generally thought to have stronger support among moderates while Lonegan appeals to conservatives. The results:

  • Abortion: Christie's supports are "pro-life" vs. "pro-choice" by 57 percent to 34 percent, while Lonegan's are "pro-life" by 68 percent to 27 percent.

  • Gun ownership: Christie's supporters are pro-gun by 59 percent to 33 percent while Longegan's are pro-gun by 78 percent to 18 percent.

  • Stem cell research: Christie's supporters favor stem cell research 54 percent to 31 percent while Lonegan's back it 45 percent to 32 percent.

  • Legalizing gay marfriage: Christie's supporters oppose it 71 percent to 19 percent while Lonegan's do the same, 77 percent to 18 percent.

  • School vounchers: Christie's supporters favor them 57 percent to 26 percent while Lonegan's back them by 73 percent to 18 percent.

  • Invading Iraq: Christie's supporters believe it was the right thing to do by 62 percent to 28 percent and Lonegan's by 65 percent to 26 percent.

  • Closing Guantanamo: Christie's supporters oppose it 86 percent 9 percent while Lonegan's oppose it 83 percent to 8 percent.
