Voters Say Obama Will Need More Than Two Years to Fix Economy

Voters trust Barack Obama more than Republicans in Congress to do a better job of handling the economy but nearly two-thirds say Obama will not be able to fix the crisis within two years, according to a Quinnipiac University poll conducted Feb. 25 - Mar. 2.

Fifty-six percent trust Obama more on the economy compared to 26 percent who trust the Republicans. But by 64 percent to 28 percent, they don't believe Obama will be able to turn things around in that two-year period. On that point, a Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll released yesterday asked the expectations question a somewhat different way - i.e., when would they start holding Obama responsible for the state of the economy - and 41 percent gave him two years or more and 38 percent gave him two years or less.

A majority of voters believe Obama will deliver on his promises to achieve a major health care overhaul and not to raise taxes on those with an annual family income of less than $250,000, but they don't think he will be able to keep his promise to cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term.

Fifty-nine percent say they approve of the way Obama is doing his job while 25 percent do not. Nineteen percent say they believe Obama is doing a better job than they expected (64 percent said his job performance was about what they expected).

As in the Journal/NBC poll, congressional Republicans fared badly. While voters divided equally at 45 percent each in terms of approving or disapproving the job congressional Democrats were doing, the disapproval rate for Republicans was 58 percent comparfed to 30 percent who approved of their performance.
