President-elect Barack Obama's aide have been talking to Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill about a stimulus package of roughly $775 billion, and a Gallup poll conducted Jan. 6-7 say Americans support that by 53 percent to 36 percent with 11 percent undecided.

Broken down along partisan lines, Republicans oppose it 56 percent to 34 percent, Democrats favor it 67 percent to 19 percent and independents support it 54 percent to 37 percent.

On other elements of a stimulus package that have been discussed, Gallup found:

  • Seventy-two percent supports income tax cuts of $500 for individuals and $1,000 for couples for most Americans.

  • Seventy-five percent back tax cuts for businesses to help save and create more jobs.

  • Seventy-eight percent back creating new jobs through major new public works spending.

  • The closest call is on providing federal money to state governments facing budget shortfalls. Forty-nine percent favor it and 42 percent oppose.
