Congressional Democrats appear to be basking in some of the glow of Barack Obama's high approval ratings so far with 49 percent giving positive marks to the job they are doing compared to 26 percent who approve of Republicans, according to a Diageo/Hotline poll conducted Jan. 21-24.
Right now, 55 percent of voters see Obama favorably and 21 percent "somewhat favorably" for a total positive mark of 76 percent. Voters approve of the way Obama is so far handling his presidency by 63 percent to 9 percent. By 75 percent to 22 percent, they are confident Obama will bring real change to the way things are done in Washington.
Forty-six percent of those polled said they'd vote for a Democrat for Congress in 2010 compared to 22 percent who side with the GOP and 37 percent undecided. These generic match-ups tend to have little meaning since interviewees usually react differently when asked to choose between specific candidates.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader don't fare as well, with her favorable to unfavorable ratio at 35 percent each with and Reid's at 20 percent unfavorable and 18 percent favorable. The total figure weighing in on both sides is much lower than Obama's since only 10 percent say of the president that they don't know, or that they heard of him but can't rate him, while much higher numbers of respondents unsurprisingly don't know much about or haven't heard of Pelosi or Reid. Fifteen percent haven't heard of Pelosi and 37 percent haven't heard of Reid.
