Fifty-one percent of those who watched the debate said that Joseph Biden did the best job, compared to 36 percent for Sarah Palin, according to a CNN poll. The margin of error is 4 points. Debate-watchers also though Biden showed himself to be the more intelligent by a 57 percent to 26 percent margin.
Based on what they heard, voters said by 53 percent to 42 percent that Biden seemed more likely to bring change to Washington, even though he is a 35 year veteran of the Senate.
Eighty-seven percent said Biden was qualified to be President compared to 46 percent for Palin.
A CBS News/Knowledge Networks poll of undecided voters also said that debate watchers thought Biden did a better job by 46 percent to 21 percent. A third of viewers thought it was a tie. Even a quarter of those who described themselves as Republicans thought Biden won.
Fifty-five percent said Palin's performance changed their opinions of her for the better, 30 percent said their view of her had not changed, and 14 percent said they had a lower opinion of her. The number of viewers who thought she was knowledgeable on important issues rose from 43 percent to 66 percent. Palin also gained on the question of whether she was prepared for the job, with the number saying that she was rising from 39 percent to 55 percent. Seventy-three percent said they thought Palin shared their values compared to 58 percent before the debate.
Biden's performance also improved his image, with 53 percent saying their view of him was now better, 5 percent said it was worse and 42 percent said their opinions were unchanged.
