Half of Public Sees Palin Favorably, but Question Her Experience

| | Comments (1)

Fifty percent of Americans have a favorable view of Sarah Palin with 37 percent regarding her unfavorably, but perceptions of her split sharply along partisan lines, according to an ABC News poll conducted Sept. 4. The margin of error is 4.5 percent. Republicans look positively on Palin by an 85 percent to 7 percent margin compared to Democrats who regard her unfavorably by 63 percent to 24 percent. Independents see her favorably by 53 percent to 34 percent.

For comparison, Joseph Biden's favorable to unfavorable ratio is 54 percent to 30 percent with Democrats holding that view 77 percent to 9 percent, independents seeing him favorably by 52 percent to 31 percent and Republicans seeing him unfavorably by 60 percent to 27 percent. But Americans say by 50 percent to 42 percent that she does not have the right experience to be President while 66 percent say Biden does.

However, the majority of Americans say the selection of the vice presidential candidates will make no difference to their votes.

Other findings on Palin:

  • Americans say she made the right choice to accept the VP nomination despite her family situation by 2-to-1.
  • Half the public says the media have treated Palin fairly compared to 4 in 10 who say it didn't, and the critics mostly attributed that to political bias than sexism.
  • On her strong opposition to abortion, 57 percent of Republicans see her more favorably because of it but only 29 percent of independents and 19 percent of Democrats agree.
  • Conservatives and evangelicals appear more energized in support of McCain due to the choice of Palin.

  1. Most election polls do not include newly registered voters, thus the results are questionable. Plus, who answers their phones for unlisted numbers – less than 20 percent of people, I’ve done calling. Don’t let any candidate, including Palin, become just another distraction to keep voters and the campaigns from focusing on the real issues: the economy and weakened US dollar due to a record national debt, lack of affordable health care, our soldiers dying in Iraq and Afghanistan, lack of an energy policy supporting alternative energy sources (renew the wind and solar tax incentives) and our dependence on foreign oil, and the Republicans wanting to take us back to the days of illegal abortions and no sex education in the schools. Sex education also teaches about the dangers of sexually transmitted diseases which happen to be dramatically increasing in Alaska. Let's encourage all the parties to focus on the issues.
