Barack Obama leads John McCain by 50 percent to 42 percent in the latest Washington Post/ABC News poll conducted July 10-13. The margin of error is 3 points. That compares to a 4 point lead in mid-June after Obama clinched the Democratic nomination and a 7 point lead in May. Asked to rate both candidates on 17 issues, the poll said Obama consistently came out ahead except on social issues, where he and McCain were about even, and terrorism, where voters preferred McCain by points. The top three issues chosen as "extremely important" by voters were the economy (50 percent), gasoline prices (48 percent) and Iraq (42 percent). On the economy, voters trusted Obama over McCain by a 54 percent to 35 percent margin
New Poll Has Obama Up by Eight
Where Obama suffers is on the question of his experience, or lack of it, in world affairs. Voters say by a 63 percent to 26 percent margin that McCain has a better knowledge of world affairs and they trust him more to handle a crisis by 50 percent to 41 percent. That was something Obama tried to address today with a speech on Iraq, Afghanistan and foreign policy in advance of his upcoming trip abroad. However, they also believe by a 2-to-1 margin that Obama is better able to repair America's image abroad.
Other highlights from the poll:
Voters said by 49 percent to 44 percent that Obama has been flip-flopping on the issues compared to 47 percent to 45 percent for McCain.
Asked whether there were "some things" about each candidate that "worry you," voters answered yes about Obama by 2-to-1 and about McCain by more than 3-to-1. In 2000, voters felt that way about Al Gore by 62 percent to 35 percent, and about Bush by 59 percent to 38 percent.
Voters were split on whether they thought Obama would be a good commander-in-chief of the military but said by 72 percent to 25 percent that McCain would be.
Voters were evenly divided on which was more important: "strength and experience" or "new direction and new ideas."
On Obama's experience level, voters said by 49 percent to 40 percent that Obama's lack of experience would hurt him somewhat or a great deal. They said by 43 percent to 33 percent that McCain's age would work against him.
