Obama Leads McCain In California, But Clinton Lead Is Razor Thin

Barack Obama leads John McCain in delegate-rich California by 49 percent to 40 percent among likely voters while Hillary Clinton holds a bare lead over McCain of 46 percent to 43 percent, according to a Public Policy Institute of California poll conducted March 11-18. the margin of error is 3 percent. This contrasts markedly with a March14-16 poll by SurveyUSA showing Obama and Clinton both with comfortable margins over McCain.

Obama’s favorability rating is 61 positive percent to 34 percent negative, McCain’s is 49 percent to 45 percent and, has it has been showing up in other state and national polls , those with unfavorable opinions of Clinton outnumber the favorables 52 percent to 45 percent.

Other findings:

  • 73 percent of all voters believe the country is heading in the wrong direction, and among them, that view is held by 80 percent of Democrats, 60 percent of Republicans and 77 percent of independents. Similarly, 76 percent of all adults in California are bracing for bad economic times in the next 12 months, a view shared almost equally among all voter groups.
  • President Bush’s approval rating reached a new low at 24 percent, about the same as in national polls.
  • Sixty three percent of likely voters disapprove of the way Congress is doing its job compared to 33 percent who are satisfied.
  • Californians believe by a 59 percent to 34 percent margin that immigrants benefit the state and that illegal immigrants who have been working there should be allowed to keep their jobs and apply for permanent status.
  • Only 34 percent of adults believe the war in Iraq is going very or somewhat well, although, among Republicans, that figure is 69 percent. Fifty eight percent of all adults want to bring troops home as soon as possible, while 38 percent believe they should stay there until the situation stabilizes. Three-quarters of Republicans take the stay-until-stabilizes view, 41 percent of independents feel that way but only 22 percent of Democrats.
  • Half of all likely voters believe the Democrats would do a better job on the economy versus 37 percent who favor the Republicans. Forty-eight percent prefer the Democrats to handle Iraq to 38 percent who believe the Republicans would do better.
  • On immigration, likely voters favor the Democrats over Republicans by 42 percent to 37 percent.
  • On health care, the Democrats are favored by a 59 percent to 27 percent margin.
