President Obama's campaign manager David Plouffe went under the radar after his boss was elected president but now has a new book out, "The Audacity to Win." On "The Daily Show" he discusses the president's long-term vision for health care, the environment -- and how a light saber comes in handy.

Jon Stewart has never exactly been CNN's best friend (just ask Paul Begala and Tucker Carlson), but the Daily Show host took it to another level with an 11-minute critique of the news organization's failure to fact-check its guests. Stewart mocked the Most Trusted Name in News for taking the time to truth-squad a Saturday Night Live skit about President Obama, while failing to scrutinize a litany of questionable claims by interview subjects. Stewart suggested a new slogan: "CNN, No One Leaves More Things There."

If there's one thing the media loves more than a good political story, it's a good media story. Combine the two, and it's a match made in heaven for the navel-gazing chattering class. The press couldn't resist obsessing over whether Pres. Obama was risking overexposure by appearing on five network talk shows this past Sunday (especially when the public thinks he isn't). So who better to point out the irony of a press complaining about too much access to the president than Jon Stewart, the king of making people drown in their own words.

The recession (which we're told is now over) put a serious hurting on states throughout the country. California tottered on the edge of implosion. Michigan, Florida, Nevada and Arizona have been particularly hard hit. But only in the Grand Canyon state did some lawmakers come up with a really crazy idea: sell the state capitol and then rent it back over the course of 20 years. The Daily Show went to Phoenix to visit what is indeed a very unattractive 60s-era complex (NOTE: Before joining CQ Politics, your humble Politics (Un)Seriously blogger worked for an Arizona newspaper) to do some due diligence about what a prospective buyer might get for their money. The piece is funny in that uncomfortable kind of way, because you feel bad for the lawmakers who can't even answer a fake journalist's questions about what they're going to do next year when they have to start paying $60 million in rent.

In his inimitable style of mashing up video clips from many disparate sources, Jon Stewart contrasts the Obama administration's inability to get on message about a health care overhaul, something he says the country desperately needs, with the Bush administration's ability to sell the Iraq war, something he says we did not need. It's typical Stewart, simultaneously funny and frightening.

White People Had A Good Run

| | Comments (1)

If you feel like the debate over health care has racial undertones - you're right. At least according to the Daily Show's Senior Black Correspondent Larry Wilmore. "That's what happens when you have a melting pot, the stew gets darker," Wilmore says. But don't worry white America, being a minority isn't so bad. As Jon Stewart finds out, it's fun to claim that other people are racist.

Everybody seemed to be waiting for some kind of contretemps at the Republican fundraising dinner where Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin first declined to speak (prompting former Speaker Newt Gingrich's role as keynoter), then her decision to attend, then her decision to show up but with a "speaking role," then her decision... well, you get the idea...
