500 Days of (Mark) Sanford

| | Comments (0)

With pressure mounting on South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford to step down (and Sanford repeatedly refusing calls to do so), some of the governor's opponents are attempting to take matters into their own hands. Democratic attorney Dwight Drake created a spoof of the hit indie film "500 Days of Summer," calling for citizens to sign a petition to force Sanford out of office.

All of that talk about "death panels" and how false they are - well, turns out Sarah Palin was right after all. Oops. Our bad, media. Thanks to the intrepid reporters at Funny Or Die for imaging how a world under a liberal 4th Reich would look.

The Onion News Network has a story that might put today's somewhat contradictory financial news (the reappointment of Ben Bernanke as Fed chairman and the announcement of a projected 2-trillion dollar increase to the 10-year deficit) into perspective: President Obama is bipolar and has entered his depressive phase.

"After a three-year period of extreme productivity and positivity, (the president) has now entered a deep depression," said a White House spokesman.

When asked a press conference about the recent deficit projections, a despondent Obama reportedly gripped his forehead and said, "Why would you ask that?"

Arlen Specter has been in the midst of controversy for much of the year, having famously switched parties back in April and, most recently, been on the receiving end of angry constituents at a health care town hall.

Which would make one think that the Pennsylvania Democrat would want to stay out of the limelight during his down time. No chance. Specter, a huge fan of stand up comedy, recently took to the stage at the Pittsburgh Improv for a charity event.

"I'm delighted to be with you," Specter opened. "After being in the town meetings, I'm delighted to be anywhere."

Much of the routine was actually pretty innocuous, poking fun at deceased or retired politicians such as Strom Thurmond and Trent Lott. He did, however, get in a little jab at Sarah Palin (watch part II).

A bikini-clad Britney Spears was on David Letterman last night to present the 'Top 10 Ways the Country Would be Different if Britney Spears Were President.' Shudder at the thought. The pop star did have some good ideas on foreign policy, however, such as only invading "fun places, like Cabo."

In his inimitable style of mashing up video clips from many disparate sources, Jon Stewart contrasts the Obama administration's inability to get on message about a health care overhaul, something he says the country desperately needs, with the Bush administration's ability to sell the Iraq war, something he says we did not need. It's typical Stewart, simultaneously funny and frightening.

Billionaires For Wealthcare

| | Comments (0)

When it comes to the health care debate, it seems every interest group in the country has had its say. But one important coalition that has been silent until now are the nation's billionaires, a small but powerful group that has launched a new campaign to tell the country "Just Vote NO! We Like the $tatus Quo!" According to their website, the Billionaires for Wealthcare (an offshoot of the mildly famous "Billionaires For Bush" coalition) have taken to the streets in recent days to fight for the one thing they believe in: "PROFITS!"

Okay, so this group is obviously using tongue-in-cheek tactics to get across its real message that it believes the current health care system rewards insurance companies and big pharma. But like a good Stephen Colbert skit, their sarcasm may be lost on their intended audience. Watch as opponents of a health care overhaul cheer as the Billionaires drive by.

Tom DeLay Tom DeLay, the man famous for twisting arms as a former House majority leader, will now be trying not to step on anyone's toes as a contestant on the upcoming season of "Dancing With the Stars."

During more than 20 years in office representing the Houston suburbs, DeLay's strong-arm tactics earned the nickname "The Hammer" (as well as an indictment from a Texas grand jury). Now "The Hammer" (wonder how MC Hammer, a pretty good dancer in his own right, feels about this encroachment on his guys-named-Hammer-who-can-dance territory) will compete against 15 other "celebrities" for dancing's lamest accolade.

How did DWTS nab DeLay? "I know it will sound stupid, we just asked him," DWTS executive producer Conrad Green told Entertainment Weekly.

Watch the video clip from Good Morning America below to find out who DeLay's main dance-off competition will be.

The folks at Red State Update suggest spending a day with the spouse and kids at the nearest health care town hall meeting, because as Dunlap says, it's "not just grown-ups who enjoy freedom." Enjoy Capri Suns, cookies, and if your little one is lucky, their very own Swastika.

Be warned - as if you couldn't tell by this intro, this video has content some may find inappropriate.

White People Had A Good Run

If you feel like the debate over health care has racial undertones - you're right. At least according to the Daily Show's Senior Black Correspondent Larry Wilmore. "That's what happens when you have a melting pot, the stew gets darker," Wilmore says. But don't worry white America, being a minority isn't so bad. As Jon Stewart finds out, it's fun to claim that other people are racist.

D-list celebrity Kathy Griffin guest hosted for Larry King last night (was Perez Hilton busy?) and had a most uncomfortable conversation with Levi Johnston, aka Sarah Palin's daughter Bristol's baby daddy. The 48-year-old Griffin, who was 19-year-old Johnston's date for the MTV Teen Choice Awards, did her best shock jock impression by telling Johnston that after waking up "spooning in his arms" she finally realized what love is, and that he left her bruised in a "naughty place." Ewww. Watch below, and for more, check out Entertainment Weekly's take on the interview.

A small group of people who question Pres. Obama's citizenship, so-called Birthers, have been getting a lot of attention lately. The president has decided to address the controversy straight on, debunking the Birthers and various other claims in his latest Web video.

It's those unexpected moments of awkward failure that make live television so much fun. New York Magazine writer Jennifer Senior has an audio malfunction during a segment with MSNBC's David Shuster.

Displaying a sense of levity that was understandably missing from his encounter with Cambridge police officer James Crowley last month, Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. gave some lighthearted comments about his now famous arrest.

Speaking at the Martha's Vineyard Book Festival, Gates joked that people told him he "looked taller" in his mug shot. He also said that he offered to get Sgt. Crowley's kids into Harvard.

On a more serious note, Gates also said that his arrest and the ensuing national debate showed just how deeply polarized the United States remains on issues of class and race.
