Shatner's Dramatic Interpretation of Palin Farewell Speech

| | Comments (2)

When Conan O'Brien realized that Sarah Palin's farewell speech was actually poem, he knew only one person could give Palin's ode to Alaska its dramatic due: William Shatner. Luckily for Conan, the former Star Trek captain-turned pop singer just happened to be hanging out backstage...

Political HumorJoke of the Day
After David Letterman offered a mea culpa to then Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin for a somewhat tasteless joke he made about one of her daughters, we couldn't help but wonder whether the brouhaha would make Letterman gun shy about delivering future jokes at Palin's expense. Turns out it hasn't. Last Friday's Top 10 list offered a parting shot before Palin's official resignation from her governor's seat.

With health care overhaul caught in a legislative crossfire on Capitol Hill, Republicans seem ready to go into overdrive to deep-six any plan that will emerge.

GOP National Committee Chairman Michael Steel has joined that assault , declaring that President Obama's initiative amounts to socialism.

In an interview on CNN, though, Steele couldn't name his own insurance provider -- a statement the Democratic National Committee pounced on and proliferated.

But at least he has one, unlike an estimated 46 million Americans or so.

Most Children Oppose Child Health Care

In the midst of the health care overhaul debate, the Onion News Network unearthed a survey of 2,000 youngsters between 3 and 8, and 68 percent answered "NOOO!" when asked if they'd like to go to the doctor more. They were also strongly opposed to vaccinations.

Waking Up Is A Strange Reason To Die

Those 'Auto-Tune The News' guys are back (for their earlier hits, see here, here and here), this time with a medley that includes the House's climate change bill, Sarah Palin's resignation as the governor of Alaska and, yes, Michael Jackson, who, in the words of one pundit, "woke up dead."

Sotomayor's Mother Chatty Kathy In Senate Bathroom

| | Comments (0)

There was a funny moment in the Sotomayor nomination hearings yesterday when Sen. Amy Klobuchar said she almost missed her questioning session because of an encounter in the women's bathroom with a chatty audience member: Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor's mother, Celina.

"She has plenty of stories she would like to share about you," the Minnesota Democrat said, prompting a laughing Sotomayor to respond, "Senator, don't give her the chance."

Klobuchar praised Celina Sotomayor's patience, saying that her own mother has been leaving her messages during the hearing asking when she will get her turn at questioning.

"My favorite one," Klobuchar said of her mother's messages, "was, 'I watched Sen. (Dianne) Feinstein (D-Calif.) and she was brilliant. What are you going to do?'"

As part of a training exercise, young progressive organizers are merging social media with tactics from the Obama campaign to elect one of eight superheroes Mayor of DC (that's the District of Columbia, not DC Comics). Check out the campaign, and vote for your favorite superhero here. Voting runs from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. today. Have you always wanted to talk like a politician? This helpful guide teaches you how and when it's appropriate to pull a "Sanford," get all "Beck-y" and drop a "Rahm Bomb."

The scene in the 2005 movie Downfall, where Hitler learns that the allied forces are descending upon him and he's pretty much doomed, has become an Internet parody sensation. YouTube denizens have had fun with the scene's subtitles, spoofing Hitler reacting to such wacky scenarios as finding out that the Dallas Cowboys lost the Super Bowl, and, for the sci-fi geeks, Hitler learning about the Dragonball Live Action Movie. Now, add to the mix, Hitler learns that Sarah Palin won't be attending his fundraiser.

The Best of Al Franken

In honor of Minnesota's newest senator, we decided to compile some of our favorite videos of the former funnyman being funny. The first video of Franken drawing a map of the contiguous 48 states - one of the few lighter moments to surface from a campaign that was as serious as a heart attack - is more impressive than ha-ha funny. But it does contain a pretty good line: "Why is Minnesota so windy? Because the Dakotas blow and Wisconsin sucks." Take that, cheese-state.
