Five Ways to Pick a Running Mate

| | Comments (6)

Time notes there "are a lot of ways to choose a Vice President, and each comes with risks."

Here are five:

  1. Play to Your Strength: "Perhaps the fastest way to send a message about who you are is to pick someone...who appears to be just like you."
  2. Look at the Map: "The map can help a nominee make a play for a state that is crucial in November, though that is never a sure bet."
  3. Shore Up Your Weak Side: McCain may choose someone younger, like Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, while Obama could choose someone more experienced, like U.S. Senator Joe Biden.
  4. Hug Your Rival: "The other party is certain to dredge up every damaging sound bite...that your former rival hurled in your direction back in February. These worries are usually overcome."
  5. Hire Some Pizzazz: Possible pizzazz choices for McCain include Colin Powell, and Obama could choose Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano or Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius.
Meanwhile, political strategists talk to Mark Halperin about how to increase your chances to be picked as a running mate.

  1. Republicans tend to pick former cabinet officials, so I think McCain picks Rob Portman. And 99 percent of America responds "who's Rob Portman?"

Obama needs to go with option 1 or 2, ideally both. It's a Big 10 election for Obama ... he can't afford to lose more than two of the states with universities in the Big 10 (PA, OH, MI, IN, IL, WI, MN, IA.) Plus I don't like the idea of Obama going with an older running mate because that will diminish him.

So I say go right for the toughest of the Big 10 states (Indiana) and a youngish politician with both gubernatorial and Senate experience ... and someone who was a Clinton ally.

    Evan Bayh's the best choice.

  2. #3 is Obama's biggest weakness so I would address it by choosing Sen. James Webb (D-VA).

Additionally, I think it addresses #5 very nicely while putting Virginia in play.

  3. I think Fl Senator Bill Nelson is Obama's ideal pick - military experience (Marines and the Armed Services Committee), has won several statewide elections in FL (a key swing state), a Clinton supporter this cycle, and is an evangelical.

Also, Nelson is young enough to run for President in 2016 after two Obama terms.

  4. Yeah, look at the map, the Electoral Map. Clinton's the only winning choice. Why make it complicated? Why take a chance, a big chance, on one of these lesser, unproven "luminaries"? Calling The Obama: brush aside the silly argument about insider/outsider and change, and make a rational, tenable, politically savvy, SOUND judgment, as if your political life depended on it. It does, and Clinton can save you from yourself and the dumbass DNC.

  6. I believe the top 3 candidates for Obama's VP nominee are Gen. Wesley Clark, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson and Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell.

I do not believe Obama will choose another US Senator as his running mate.

But do not ask me whom Obama will choose. Ask Caroline.
