Gore to the Rescue?

Joe Klein develops our speculation that Al Gore could possibly rescue the Democratic party from a divisive convention battle.

"Let's say the elders of the Democratic Party decide, when the primaries end, that neither Obama nor Clinton is viable. Let's also assume—and this may be a real stretch—that such elders are strong and smart enough to act. All they'd have to do would be to convince a significant fraction of their superdelegate friends, maybe fewer than 100, to announce that they were taking a pass on the first ballot at the Denver convention, which would deny the 2,025 votes necessary to Obama or Clinton. What if they then approached Gore and asked him to be the nominee, for the good of the party—and suggested that he take Obama as his running mate?"

Probably an unlikely scenario, but fun to think about nonetheless.

  2. The Goring is coming! The Goring is coming! I absolutely agree. The Big Boys are going to tell the superdelegates to sit on their hands for round one at the convention. Hillary and Obama have beaten each other up so much neither is electable. After round one at the convention, all bets are off. Gore comes in as the "Savior".

  4. No way! I am a Gore admirer, but it isn't going to happen and it shouldn't.

The candidate that Democrats voted for in 2008 will have to be the nominee. Can you imagine the resentment if Obama has the most delegates and the big boys (and girls) decide he should move to the back of the bus so a white guy can sit in front? Ditto if Clinton has the most delegates. The message would be, "We aren't ready for a woman president, so we'll let the little lady be VP."

I hope and believe that the Democratic superdelegates are incapable of such arrogance.
