Home State Republican Will Vote To Scold Wilson

One of Rep. Joe Wilson's fellow South Carolina Republicans spoke Tuesday in favor of chastising Wilson for his "You lie!" outburst aimed at President Obama during last week's joint session of Congress.

Rep. Bob Inglis said he will vote in favor of disapproving of Wilson's behavior because the rule of law in the House must be upheld. He said he told colleagues during a Republican Conference meeting that if Wilson did not formally apologize to the House, he would vote for the resolution of disapproval. Wilson has no plans to apologize.

"The House rules were broken, and the rule of law needs to be redeemed," said Inglis, who told Wilson on Monday what he planned to do. "It's very important to this institution."

It's a bold political move for Inglis. Despite the House's imminent action, expected this afternoon on the House floor, Wilson has gained folk hero status among some conservatives who oppose Obama.

And Inglis already is facing four challengers for his June 2010 Republican House primary, who generally charge he isn't conservative enough for South Carolina's 4th District.

Inglis had to rebuff a primary challenger in 2008, winning by a 2-to-1 ratio, before coasting to a general election victory with 60 percent of the vote in the northwestern South Carolina Republican stronghold. That was the exact same percentage that 4th District voters gave Republican presidential nominee John McCain in his contest with Obama.
