One branch's clunker is another branch's catch.
The Congressional Federal Credit Union is offering sweet deals on two cars, a 2005 BMW X3 and a 2006 Volvo XC, that would qualify as gas-guzzling clunkers under the Transportation Department's "cash for clunkers" program, which ends Tuesday.
So, while the executive branch has been inducing Americans to give up clunkers, the credit union housed in the Capitol is enticing its members to buy them.
The Volvo's 17 miles per gallon in the city beats out the BMW's 16 MPG, according to a CFCU flyer provided to Notepad by a source.
The credit union is selling the BMW, with 58,000 miles, for $17,900, which is $2,125 less than the National Automobile Dealers Association's estimate of $20,025. The Volvo is listed at $18,900, which is $1,975 less than NADA's estimate for that model.
The cars for sale are leftovers from a defunct lease program run by the credit union. If the cars are in good shape when they are returned at the end of a lease, the credit union spruces them up a bit and sells them to its members.
Originally established in 1953, the CFCU primarily catered to House staff before expanding to employees of other institutions in the Washington metropolitan area. It remains a popular credit union for lawmakers' employees and has four of its five locations on Capitol Hill.
