Wasserman Schultz-Emerson-Gillibrand-Collins.
It doesn't exactly sound like
Murderers' Row. But they'll put their bats to the test next week in a bipartisan, bicameral softball game against a team of women from the national party committees.
Insiders say Kathy Castor, D-Fla., is The Natural on the lawmakers' team.
Billed as the first-of-its-kind, the Congressional Women's Softball Game -- where admission is free but donations are appreciated -- will benefit the Manhattan-based Young Survival Coalition, which is dedicated to combating breast cancer in young women.
First, the important details
- Date: Tuesday, July 14
- Time: 7:35 p.m.
- Location: Guy Mason Park at 3600 Calvert Street NW in the Glover Park neighborhood
- Teams: The Women of Congress vs. The Women of Democratic and Republican Political Committees
- Captains: Reps. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., and Jo Ann Emerson, R-Mo., and Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y. and Susan Collins, R-Maine.
Wasserman Schultz, a breast cancer survivor who found a lump during a self-exam in 2007, has been working to win passage of legislation that would launch a campaign by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to educate young women about breast cancer.
Emerson is a cosponsor of the House bill and Gillibrand is a cosponsor of the companion measure sponsored by Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn.
Marcia Stein, CEO of the Young Survival Coaliton, says the charity expects to take in $20,000 and is grateful to be chosen as the beneficiary.
"We're incredibly honored," Stein said.
Emerson and Wasserman Schultz said the game provides an opportunity to raise awareness about breast cancer, raise money for that cause, and bring women lawmakers together for non-partisan fun.
"The more activities we do like this, the better the Congress will work," Emerson said.
Collins lent her name to the effort but is not expected to play.
Here's a partial roster of the other member/players:
- Betty Sutton, D-Ohio,
- Kathy Dahlkemper, D-Pa.
- Betsy Markey, D-Colo.
- Nydia Velazquez, D-N.Y.
- Grace Napolitano, D-Ariz.
- Susan Davis, D-Calif.
- Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va.
- Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla.
- Jean Schmidt, R-Ohio
- Laura Richardson, D-Calif.

*UPDATE: Gaye Galvin of the RNC says she and three fellow co-captains for the political committees' team -- the NRCC's Natalie Buchanan, the DNC's Katie Dvorak and the DCCC's Stephanie Young -- are looking forward to joining forces.
"Playing as a team will be easy," Galvin said. "Out on that field we are all just young women, united together for one cause, fighting breast cancer." *
