The Hispanic Bar Association of the District of Columbia is vigorously pushing its favored nominee for one of two vacancies on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.

As first reported by Legal Times, the bar association has endorsed Vanessa Ruiz, currently a judge on the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.

"The organization is certainly behind her and doing all it can to see she gets the nomination," Brigida Benitez, a past president of the bar association and partner at WilmerHale, told CQ.

Ruiz, who has served on the DC court for 15 years, previously served as corporation counsel for the District of Columbia and as a partner in the law firm of Pepper, Hamilton & Scheetz

"She possesses the keen intellect, distinguished professional record, commitment to equal justice, sound judgment, temperament, and proven integrity that characterize our country's best jurists," Benitez wrote in a March letter HBA-RUIZ letter.pdf to Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. and White House Counsel Gregory Craig.

According to Legal Times, other possible nominees to the DC Circuit include Joseph Sellers, a partner at Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll, and Martha Minow, a Harvard Law School professor whose former students include President Obama.
