Virginia Freshmen Join Forces To Raise 2010 Money

The three Virginia Democrats who replaced Republicans after the 2008 election will be raising some campaign funds together as they prepare for their House re-election campaigns.

Virginia Freshmen Victory Fund was established Monday with the Federal Election Commission as a joint fundraising committee that will collect funds and then divvy them up among the campaign committees of Reps. Glenn Nye of the 2nd District, Tom Perriello of the 5th District and Gerald E. Connolly of the 11th District.

The victories of Nye, Perriello and Connolly enabled Democrats to increase their House majority in the 2008 election, but the Republicans are targeting all three Democrats in 2010.

Nye, whose district takes in Virginia Beach and other territory in southeastern Virginia, faces a handful of Republican opponents.

Perriello's south-central Virginia district is the most conservative-leaning district of the three Virginia Democratic freshmen, and he also had the closest 2008 race, a 727-vote victory over Republican Rep. Virgil H. Goode Jr. Perriello won't face Goode, who has ruled out a rematch, but state Sen. Robert Hurt is among the Republicans considering a bid.

Connolly, who represents some Democratic-trending suburbs of Washington, D.C., is not as politically vulnerable as Nye or Perriello but can't take for granted a rematch-minded challenge from businessman Keith Fimian, who lost to Connolly by 55 percent to 43 percent last year.
