Bennet 'Checks' on Health Care in Colorado

Sen. Michael Bennet, like many lawmakers, has been busy adding to his campaign war chest to prepare for the 2010 election.

The Colorado Democrat used a different kind of venue — President Obama’s town hall meeting on health care in Grand Junction — to send a short message following Saturday’s event:

“Dear Friend, I wanted to send you a short note after the town hall with President Obama in Grand Junction. It was great to stand with the President and make the case why we must pass health care reform this year. I was honored to be singled out by the President for my efforts to reform health care. Bennet was tapped by Democratic Gov. Bill Ritter Jr. in January to succeed one-term Democrat Ken Salazar, who vacated the seat to become Interior secretary.

Although he could benefit from a strong Democratic trend that has built over this decade in Colorado, he is untested as a candidate. His 2010 Senate bid will be his first campaign for public office.

The GOP field of candidates seeking the nomination to challenge Bennet likely will include Ryan Frazier, a city councilman from Aurora who is African-American, and Ken Buck, the district attorney in Weld County in northern Colorado.

CQ Politics rates the general election race as Democrat Favored.
