For Cornyn, Grass Seems Greener In Fiorina Candidacy

In California, Republican assemblyman Chuck DeVore is actively campaigning against Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer, but it's clear that in Washington, GOP leaders think there's a better candidate for 2010.

National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn on Wednesday was talking up another California prospect: former Hewlett Packard executive Carly Fiorina,.

"Who would have imagined even before she announces her candidacy that she'd be within 4 points in a Rasmussen Poll against Barbara Boxer," Cornyn said.

The poll he referred to was from July.

Earlier surveys, such as a February Field Poll, showed Boxer leading Fiorina 55 percent to 25 percent.

Cornyn said Boxer's recent "YouTube moments" have called her re-election prospects into question. In one example, the NRSC has promoted video footage of Boxer pressing an Army General to call her "senator" not "ma'am."

Boxer campaign spokeswoman Rose Kapolczynski said Boxer has faced tough elections in the past, such as in 2004, and the lawmaker has prevailed. "Senator Boxer has always been underestimated by Republicans in California and Washington D.C., but in the end the voters decide that she has been fighting for them and they want her to continue to represent them in the Senate," Kapolczynski said.

CQ Politics currently rates the general election Safe Democrat.

  1. The only tough race she ever had was her first one in 1992, when her opponent Bruce Herschensohn was caught coming out of a strip club, or was it a cathouse. 2004??? I can't even remember who ran against her then.

  2. Our U.S. Senate YouTube campaign video about Boxer's dressing down of General Walsh has generated more than four times the views of the NRSC's version -- and it has the added advantage of being funny: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsGR83Imoto.

    All the best,

    Chuck DeVore
    California State Assemblyman
    Candidate for U.S. Senate 2010
