American adults have become a bit less welcoming to immigrants, according to a Gallup poll conducted July 10-12.
Sixty-one percent of Republicans, 46 percent of independents and 44 percent of Democrats surveyed said they want immigration to be decreased, according to the poll released Wednesday. Overall, 50 percent of American adults want immigration decreased.
Support for cutting back immigration rose for all political persuasions from levels a year ago and have spiked in a manner similar to sentiments following the attacks of Sept. 11, 2002, Gallup said.
That sentiment also cut across geographic lines with majorities in the East (51 percent) and the South (54 percent) supporting tighter restrictions on immigration. Pluralities in the Midwest (48 percent) and the West (44 percent) want immigration decreased.
"The shift toward a tougher stance this time around may reflect the country's economic situation, as Americans tend to become less pro-immigration during difficult economic times," Gallup said.
The poll was conducted by telephone interviews with 1,018 Americans, age 18 and over, and carries a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Is there any surprise here? Afterall, the average American has been getting SCREWED by both Parties on this issue. Dems want an endless supply of down-scale voters and the GOP and their small and big business allies want an endless supply of cheap, undocumented labor. It ain't complicated!
What I can't understand is why the labor unions have bent-over and taken it up the A__ on this. As a union member, I know the Public Employee Unions are owned, lock, stock & barrel by the Dems but private sector union members are the ones who are getting the shaft by uncontrolled immigration. All of these people willing to work for peanuts can only drive down wages---it's Econ 101.
I don't disparage immigrants who want to come here any way they can; if I were one of them, I'd be doing the same thing. It's the GOVERNMENT that's allowing this appalling fiasco to happen. They are the real criminals. I hold them in total contempt.

We have completely lost sight of achieving a sustainable population and with it any hope of reducing consumption, energy use, gas use, water use, etc.
Only by REDUCING immigration and curtailing ILLEGAL immigration can we get back to a real hopeful future for the nation.

People have been saying for years that to allow over a million people a year to immigrate into OUR country is a Million too many!!! We DO NOT need more unskilled workers, this has been proven over and over with American Citizens taking the jobs everyone said "Americans would not do"!!! If you add the Million+ illegal aliens to the number of legal immigrants it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out OUR economy CAN NOT support these extra people nor can it support the increased exspendutures created with this increase !!! ATTRITION THROUGH ENFORCEMENT NOT AMNESTY !!!!

On the contrary, we do need more and better workers. I've been very impressed by immigrants I've met, and I think they are a great asset to the country.
