The buzz in New York is that Democratic stakeholders are giving Gov. David A. Paterson until fall to turn around his poll ratings and prove his electoral viability for 2010. But one group of labor leaders in Buffalo isn't interested in waiting until then.
New York Daily News' Elizabeth Benjamin has a letter from the 11 union heads, sent earlier this week, entreating Andrew Cuomo to run for governor next year, saying they prefer the popular attorney general to the erstwhile incumbent.

"The actions of Gov. Paterson over the last several months have caused us to have serious concerns relating to New York State's direction and the negative impact of those decisions on the people of our state," the letter reads.
The union leaders continue that while they cannot guarantee an endorsement of Cuomo, "we, the undersigned urge you to run for governor," adding, "there are many like us who look forward to your being elected."
Cuomo has remained coy about his interest in running for the seat, telling reporters last week he planned to stay away from politics this year. "Next year will be a political year and we'll deal with it then," he said, reiterating that his only election plan at the moment was running for re-election as attorney general. But the New York Times reported over the weekend that Cuomo "has begun to embrace the possibility of a run for governor."
Cuomo has consistently obliterated Paterson in polls of a hypothetical primary match-up, but he would no doubt be much more inclined to run if Paterson steps down, rather than face a contested race for the Democratic nomination.
Indeed, a primary would likely be messy, as Paterson still retains pockets of support in the party. As Benjamin pointed out Wednesday, one of Buffalo's labor leaders declined to sign on to the letter to Cuomo, and continues to back the governor.
If Paterson opts not to run in 2010, Cuomo could avoid the party infighting and, given the state's Democratic tendencies, would be a strong favorite to win the general election. Republicans are hoping to recruit former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani to run. He has not ruled it out but has also not taken any concrete steps toward a campaign. Former Republican Rep. Rick Lazio and Erie County Executive Chris Collins are other possible GOP candidates.
