In Florida, Republican state Rep. Dorothy Hukill on Monday announced she has filed to run against Democratic Rep. Suzanne M. Kosmas in 2010.

"Our current congresswoman promised the residents of District 24 she was going to be responsible with their money, and since she's gone there, she's voted for trillions in government spending," Hukill told CQ Politics. She added that her state legislative district overlaps 20 percent of the 24th Congressional District.

Republicans have been reaching out to prospective candidates to challenge freshman Kosmas. Now, it appears Republicans will be forced to deal with a GOP primary fight in Florida's 24th District, potentially complicating a race regarded as one of their top pickup opportunities in the House.

Hukill faces GOP competition from Winter Park City Commissioner Karen Diebel who announced her candidacy last month.

After Diebel's entry to the race, it remained unclear whether additional Republicans who had been floated for the seat, including Hukill and state Rep. Sandy Adams, would enter. Diebel has already faced Democratic attacks. State Democratic party officials called her "unstable" and labeled Diebel's past behavior as "erratic."

Hukill, who met with the National Republican Congressional Committee in mid-June, said her decision to run was "in no way is dependent upon on what Karen [Diebel] did or did not do."

The 24th district narrowly favored John McCain for president last year with 51 percent of the vote to 49 percent for Barack Obama. Kosmas is serving her first term in office after ousting Republican Tom Feeney in November. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee placed Kosmas on their list of "Frontline" candidates targeted to receive additional support in the 2010 cycle.

  1. Another district that never should have been lost. Dumb-Ass Feeney.

  2. Part of the GOPs "culture of corruption". Feeney, former senate leader in Florida, claimed it was a "rookie mistake" to accept lavish travel junkets from Jack Abramoff. Please. No wonder Kosmas beat him handily.
